Do you prune? To promote growth or any other reason? Also wanted to know if there’s a way I can play with the younger leaves with drying anchoring to practice and get a better understanding of curing process. I know they aren’t at their full potential but I also smoke herb and would love some lower nicotine content leaves to roll in if possible. So any tips on curing/drying to get that in humid southern environments talk to me!
I think my plants are gonna be small. Started too early and didnt pot up when i probably should have. Already seeing buds forming on the Virginia plants. Should i knock off the bottom leaves now and are they worth keeping?
Something is eating the leaves of a few plants I’ve recently placed outside. Could anyone point me in the right direction for identifying the pest and how to control it?
its my first time growing tobacco so im not sure of what I need to do next. Should I let them grow more in these cups and transplant them outside or move them to bigger pots and let them grow more inside. I think I am at a month and a half since i started. And im growing florida sumatra, habano 2000, havana 142, cuban criollo and im zone 5b
Hello everyone
I have a problem with some kind of insect nibbling on the tobacco leafs
The bites on the leafa are huge like it was bitten by a horse
Can anyone recommend a natural bug repellent or insecticide that's not going to effect the development and taste of the tobacco?
About 20 days to go untill all risk of frost has past. Then transplanting outdoors
With each step, these guys just filled out their space overnight it seems. Even hardening has gone by quickly. These landraces are finally getting a full day of sun.
Hi everyone,
I am starting my first journey into growing Virginia Tobacco, and I would like to make sure I have a clear roadmap of the entire process. Since I am a beginner, I would appreciate your insights on the specific steps and what to watch out for at each stage.
Here is what I am trying to map out:
What is the best medium for starting Virginia seeds?
How long should I keep them indoors before they are hardy enough for transplanting?
Spacing: What is the ideal distance between plants for Virginia Gold?
Fertilizing: I’ve heard Virginia needs specific N-P-K ratios (lower Nitrogen towards the end?). What do you recommend?
Topping & Suckering: When exactly should I cut the flower heads, and how often should I remove the suckers to maximize leaf quality?
How do I identify the perfect ripeness for a Virginia leaf?
Do you recommend harvesting the whole stalk or "priming" (picking leaf by leaf from the bottom up)?
Color Curing: How can I achieve that classic bright yellow color without a professional flue-curing kiln? Can I air-cure Virginia with decent results?
Fermentation/Aging: Does Virginia tobacco require a fermentation chamber (kiln), or is long-term aging enough to remove the harshness?
What are the most common pests (hornworms, aphids) or diseases (blue mold, mosaic virus) I should prepare for?
What is the #1 mistake that ruins a first-time harvest?
I am located in Central Europe, so my growing season is somewhat limited. Any tips for this specific climate would be amazing.
Thank you all for sharing your expertise!😁🤗
The bigger one is viginian gold the smaller is Rustica
This is my first time growing tobacco, I have 4 tobacco plants growing inside a 3x3 tent indoors. They are all different types. I have ontario bold, black seas samsun, havana, and black mammoth
They are currently all growing in 5 gallon pails although started in smaller containers. The ontario bold is back left, and the black seas samsun is front left, they are both growing well, but the havana and black mammoth dont seem to be growing upwards.
They both have numerous good sized leaves but they dont seem to be growin close together and close to the ground.
I have been using fertilizer but I have used it on all the plants so I dont think its that. The grow light is a cheap Amazon dimmable 80watt fixture that is running at max, 16hour time and was positioned 18"above the plants. The light is higher now due to the other plants growing taller.
I have attached photos from a couple days ago, I also tried cutting a leaf in half as I read somewhere that may cause the plant to grow upwards, but it is still the same height as a couple days ago.
Wondering if anyone has seen this before, or knows how to fix it. I'm thinking it maybe the light, but not sure if too much or too little.
When should I separate them and transplant them into their own cell?
Going to finally remove the lid on these.
Once I get to thinning them out going to try to relocate the ones removed to the other cells if that works.
(Connecticut) plants lay pretty flat during the day and only perk up in the last two hours of light which I find interesting.
I clipped the seed leaves and extra wilted leaves and gave them a good watering. They'll survive as usual but one thing I've noticed through the years having them all bunched up in cell trays is that they start their proper cycle only when they go in the ground which is why I always like to go outside as soon as possible. Having arrived at day 45 now I'm waiting day to day for the perfect time to go outside. There's a few cold nights coming up and I'll probably take them outside this weekend or early next week. There comes a time around week 6 where the cell trays are no longer a viable home. I did start a new batch of Bosikappal seeds in my moment of panic...I'll go ahead and do a second planting at the end of June. I'll review my process for next year and will ditch these small cell trays and get bigger ones. I also want to experiment with sowing directly in the ground like our ancestors did. To be continued...
I noticed this on three of my Burley 64 plants. I thought it might just be something caused by the environment or by the leaves growing too quickly (since it’s occurring on only the biggest leaves on these plants). However, now I’m curious if it’s TMV. I moved the plants away from my other crop, and none of the other plants show the same symptoms (yet).
The marks seem to be more than just discoloration. They’re more like thin patches, where I’m able to see through the leaf more (not entirely, but there’s only a thin film of leaf-matter).
Made my little box for color curing. They seem kinda brownish, tine to start drying them and fermenting?
