how valuable is the geeksquad experience?

Hi, I just graduated from High School and recently interested in IT, i have basic/ normal experience and knowledge about computers but nothing about hardware and that kind of stuff yet, i want to get into it and be able to hace a good IT role like cybersecurity but i know i need IT experience first before getting into the security part, so i was wondering if getting into geeksquad was a good starting point right now that im getting off high school, would it give me valuable experience for IT? or is it just bs, I would appreciate your opinions, thanks!!

Computer virus mass hysteria

I don’t know if it is just me, but I’m really sick and tired of the mass hysteria surrounding computer viruses. We aren’t in the early 2000s anymore where viruses were frantic from just opening emails and key logging your passwords and stuff. You can download all the EXE files containing malicious material in the world but it’s not going to do shit unless you manually run the file. You don’t need a $500 antivirus for that, just common sense, check the webpage you’re downloading from etc. And if you allow someone to remote into your computer, that’s not a virus that’s just you being stupid. How many times has a client come up to me with a Chromebook or iPhone telling me they have viruses on it. What??? Or a 10 year old pc they think they have viruses because it’s running slow. No shit it’s running slow, that hard drive is on its last legs. Then they get their pc back after MRI found some bs which may or may not be actual viruses and it’s still slow so they get mad. Your network has not been compromised and they are not hacking into your TV through the WiFi. Sorry for the rant I just wish people would do 5 minutes of research.

“My 17 YeAr olD NePheW dID sOmeThing and NoW I HaVe a VirUs”

Yes, sir - I’m sure that’s why there are 8 INSTALLERS EACH for WaveBrowser, shift, OneLaunch, UltraViewer, and ScreenConnectClient downloaded at least twice a week since you last came in 2 years ago. Last FACE report: 23NOV24. Literally 23 PUPs and RATs downloaded on THE 24TH?! And every 2-3 days since?! Yes, I’m *sure* your nephew is destroying your computer.

Some people really just don’t need to use computers, and that’s okay

Geek Squad Retail Agent - What is it?

What is the retail agent job for Geek Squad? I assumed it was where you worked the desk but I guess that’s Consultant agent? So what does the Retail Agent do then? I’m looking for something that will help me move into their technical side. I have an associates Computer Science so I have some technical knowledge. Been applying to help desk jobs but no luck. Working on certs but need something in the meantime to get me by and figured this might be moving in the right direction.

So I bought a pre-built CyberPower PC on black Friday from Best Buy for $1700. It was defective from the start (stuttering constantly), and then I finally brought it when it started to blue screen.

The only thing they could do was send it to manufacturer, so I had them do that. Manufacturer sent it back broken, went back to Best Buy, same thing, "we have to send it back to the manufacturer". Ok, sent it back again, then after a total of about two months without the PC, the manufacturer said it's unrepairable.

I went into Best Buy and all they can offer me is a store credit for the purchase price. I told them that doesn't seem fair, I had a defective product from the start and spent two months waiting just told be told its unfixable. They wouldn’t budge.

I'm still trying to escalate the scenario. I want either an equivalent replacement (but the same PC is about $2400 now since theres no sale and RAM prices have went up) or a refund. I would much prefer an equal replacement, and I think that is the most fair solution.

Are there any steps I can take to be made whole? Would love any advice. Feel free to tell me there is genuinely nothing they can do as well, but I think this whole situation is messed up.

I have been a CA at geeksquad for over 1 year and recently got promoted to be an ARA. I have experienced multiple geeksquad locations and consider myself knowledgeable on most gs topics.

Help with SOP

*RESOLVED.* Does anybody know the SOP regarding recording apple repairs. I understand there are technically guidelines around recording “client stuff” in precinct, but there doesn’t seem to be anything regarding specifically Apple hardware repairs. Would I get in trouble recording fixing an iPhone as long as there is no sort of client information viewable?

Do the squad comb through computers for malware and viruses or just using the same software I have?

I have Bitdefender which kind of just does it's own thing and lets me know when it's doing a regular scan but I'm pretty sure my laptop has something infecting/affecting it.

Like I'll click buttons and they just don't work until I've refreshed the page or searched something else. Weird flashes across the screen and quick popups on start up that come and go so quick I can't tell what they are except they weren't there before.

Thinking of going in to pay for someone to look at it but Idk yall are just using the same software I download myself or combing through stuff.

I’ve worked as a GS CA part-time for a little over 6 months. Lately they’ve been cutting my hours because of labor. I get they can’t fully control that, but when I was hired I was told I’d consistently get 25–30 hours a week.
I talked to my manager about it and he said they’re doing what they can to increase hours, and even mentioned possibly scheduling me at other stores. But every week my hours keep dropping. First 20, then 18, and now I’m at 10. We’re honestly way overstaffed, but they’re not letting anyone go.
So now I’m stuck at 10 hours/week. I found a full-time, work-from-home IT helpdesk job that pays more (and there aren’t any full-time GS positions open near me), so I’m thinking about applying.
Is there a way to tell if that would be a conflict of interest before applying? I don’t want to ask my manager and tip them off that I’m looking.

Tonight was my final night in the store! I joined Best Buy 5 years ago as a GSM and built to an SEM. I have loved every moment of the culture, the team building, and the experiences. Here's to more experiences on the other side! Agent Defender going sleeper.

MRI 6.0

We made all the MRIs and I’m 99.9% we did them right. We’ve been doing it for years.
But PC Doctor doesn’t work. On every computer it says it’s not licensed to run.
It does that running PC Doctor by itself or in FACE

What am i doing wrong or missing?
