Daiso knows my weakness.

I love colorful things like Babar the Elephant, so I stood there looking at them for quite a while.

How many did I buy?
I’ll leave that to your imagination.

Tips for what to do with wild ginger?

Okay Google said this was likely Japanese ginger/myoga - This has popped up next to my veg patch, I’m not familiar with it at all but if nothing else it’s very pretty sneaking out from the dead grasses. Anything I need to do to maintain it and or what do you do to harvest it?

Communal chilli sauce?

Communal chilli sauce?

I'm just idling on an idea to make a chilli sauce with produce from this community.

Every year I grow hundreds of extremely spicy chillies. I have an over abundance of them and make chilli sauce towards the end of the season. I've made some fantastic sauces in the past few years but it's always too much for me to finish.

I'm wondering if anyone would like to share produce from their garden and send, or give it to me, and in exchange I'll make a chilli sauce and give you a bottle.

I try to grow as many fruit and veg for the chilli sauce myself but I'm running out of garden space. I'm happy to buy ingredients but I thought it would be more fun if some members of the community pitch in with their homegrown things in exchange for a bottle of (extremely) spicy sauce.

My chilli sauce base is habanero, and I add other chillies for colour, flavour and extra spice. I often use moruga scorpion for the lovely colour and a kick of heat, I occasionally add Carolina reaper, dragon breath or other extremely spicy chillies.

If anyone is willing to pitch in any of the following produce, please let me know, or if you have something you think would be good, I'm all ears.

Tomato, garlic, onion, lime, red capsicum (paprika, bell pepper), some kind of sweet fruit (previously I've used pineapple, peach, pomegranate), carrot.

If I do this it'll be around September most likely.

I live in (north) Chiba so if you aren't too far away it might be easy to meet or send.

Please let me know your thoughts on this, and if you're willing to join me, and what you think you can add.

I hope this is something the community likes and something we can do :)

Night gardening

I know I should be watering in the morning, etc, but I just really love gardening on the balcony at night. I do all my fertilizing and trimming and new planting and general plant checking at night. It’s cool and peaceful and the perfect way to relax after work. Surely I’m not the only one? Show me your midnight gardening pics!

Plants for rooftop that can handle strong winds

I live in southern Kyushu. We get lots of sun, usually only a couple days of below freezing a year.

I always wanted a garden, but I found a good compromise in our house which is close to the Riverbank and has a rooftop with access to water.

Now I want to make it into a rooftop garden, however the house is 3 stories high and as it is by the river we get quite a lot of wind even when it isn't noticeable at ground level. This area of Kyushu also has a lot of typhoons.

What can I plant in pots (I'll buy or make some big heavy ones) that can handle rough weather? It won't really be possible to move them inside for typhoons since I'll need the pots to be heavy enough to handle the strong winds we get on normal days. Though possibly I could try to make a system where I can remove them individually only when necessary...

Carnivorous plants anyone ?

Does anyone here do carnivorous plants ? I've got a huge binata, lots of Venus flytraps, a handful of trumpet pitchers, and four Cephalotus. I've also got two banana trees. I don't think they're carnivorous, but one can't be too careful you know.......

Wisteria near a retaining wall bad idea?

I got this wisteria for my dad, he wanted it planted on the street below the retaining wall.

I planted it for him, but I’m pretty worried about the roots destroying the structural integrity of the wall and the concrete of the street and the drive way below.

I didn’t take a picture of it yet, but how worried should I be?

Was this a bad idea?

God damnit

Tried growing kale and cabbages on my balcony in central Tokyo. 12F, was gone for a nice 3-day-trip during golden week. Came back to this. Any advice? 😭

Second year with my peach tree!!

Second pic from last june peach on the right

Lost some branches during the winter due to improper wrapping and snow so it’s very unbalanced 😭 hopefully can correct it with the newer growth!!

Also I wonder if these flowers will turn to fruit? What if I just kept one or two, just to have a taste?

What kind of spider is this…looks dangerous(?)

While cleaning out weeds today, this little guy popped up and jumped on the wall.

Now I’m from an area of the states where my first thought was Brown Recluse => DEATH BITE.

But I’m here. So, anyone know what this is? I’m down in Kyushu…

Thanks!

What to do with these 3 avocado plants?

Hi fellow gardeners. I was wondering if I should move these in soil or keep them as is.

The one on the left is 3 years old, always living in water.
The middle one is 2 years old, with its main stem dying, but another light of hope came out a few months ago.
The one on the right is 4 months old.

Living in Kamakura, I’m worried about the potential impact of the climate on these guys, especially with the summer coming.

Thank you.

From the "Humans are no longer in charge here" Dept:

I was getting ready to leave the vegetable garden when I saw a nutria wander by. For those not in the know, a nutria is basically an Asian capybara. He sauntered over to the neighbor's garden and proceeded to help himself to the treasures therein. I walked over to within a couple of meters of him. There was no reaction, he had not a care in the world. I said "Hello!!!....." and again no reaction whatsoever. I got to within a meter of where he was busily munching away, and said "What are you doing ?". He briefly looked up and continued eating the luxurious vegetation around him. I continued to watch, awaiting some sort of response. Eventually he walked over to where I was standing and stopped at my feet. He looked up at me as if to say "What ?!...". He then stepped on my foot, walked over it and strolled into the neighor's potato patch where he partook of a bountiful feast....... some days you just have to wonder.....

Gardeners, tell me about your hoses.

I bought a house,(hose, phone fkd me), good deal from a home center that was closing. But the bloody thing keeps cracking and splitting in places. Do more expensive hoses do the same thing? Im thinking ahead for next time I buy one.

Update: Thanks for all the replies folks. It is in a roller box out of the sun, but it often collapses and splits inside the nox. The parts that stay straight are ok. So I feel like it's a cheap POS. I'll invest in a better one next time.
