LPT: heat the outside of your neck for sore throat that keeps you awake at night.

edited to add.

This is a last resort tip, try other things first, many tips in the comments.

Do not use this method if you cannot get the temperature low enough. We are aiming for 38 - 43 degrees Celsius (around 100 - 109 Fahrenheit) Slightly over body temp. You do not need high heat. Prolonged heat at above 44 degrees Celsius can lead to burns that you don't notice because of the low temperature. Later with fabric until you get the right heat, try with a thermometer after attaching it to your neck if you aren't sure(if you have a fever please check with a thermometer as your temperature can affect how you feel heat. I checked my own and it was 39 degrees. Between the neckerchief and my throat. Be extra careful with electrically heated objects, they might increase in heat after a while.

original post:

I have a very sensitive throat from having GERD. I often get a persistent cough from just house dust, and when I get a cold and a sore throat it can be hell with the added post nasal drip keeping me awake at night.

I've tried all sorts of things over the years, and now I think I've found the most helpful one.

Of course the obvious ones are stay hydrated and use a humidifier. But this is often not enough. This time I tried to keep my throat warm, as I sometimes find drinking warm water helps, and a warm shower too, but always only temporarily. I used those reusable hand warmers, rolled up in a neckerchief and tied around my neck, positioned the warm part to my throat (careful that it isn't too warm)

I'm guessing a heated scarf or neck warmer will be easier if you have one.

I also find that carbonated water is better than other things too stop the itch if you feel the urge to cough. (Don't make it a daily thing though, it's slightly acidic and can be bad for your teeth if done regularly)

Sitting half upright in bed, with my heated throat and a bottle of carbonated water with me I finally got some sleep.

Hope this can help someone else too.

Plants for rooftop that can handle strong winds

I live in southern Kyushu. We get lots of sun, usually only a couple days of below freezing a year.

I always wanted a garden, but I found a good compromise in our house which is close to the Riverbank and has a rooftop with access to water.

Now I want to make it into a rooftop garden, however the house is 3 stories high and as it is by the river we get quite a lot of wind even when it isn't noticeable at ground level. This area of Kyushu also has a lot of typhoons.

What can I plant in pots (I'll buy or make some big heavy ones) that can handle rough weather? It won't really be possible to move them inside for typhoons since I'll need the pots to be heavy enough to handle the strong winds we get on normal days. Though possibly I could try to make a system where I can remove them individually only when necessary...

I need to book a group trip for about 10 people with Finnair next year.

I am based in Japan, and we will all be travelling from Japan. The only local travel agency that does international travel in my city is Jtb, and we found them quite bad at it the last time we used for just a 2 person travel, but I think this is because we live in a smaller city. Maybe I could reach out to another travel agency in a bigger city or online?

I have never booked a group trip before and am wondering what would be the best way to do this, Finnair's FAQ said to use a travel agency or book on their site for up to 8 people, I could limit the group to 8 people but I couldn't pay 8 people's fare in one go, I could probably raise my credit card limit for the payment, but I might need to discuss the price with everyone before paying and you can't hold tickets, and if possible I really don't want to be responsible if anyone changes their mind. The last time I looked there were no other payment options available from Japan on Finnair's site.

We can't book separately because there's quite a lot of transfers involved and I couldn't know that all tickets would remain available. I will be the "guide" on this trip and they'll want me to be available for all flights until arrival.

Any advice on how to book group flights or how to do separate payments etc greatly appreciated.

Also when should I start looking for tickets? Still have more than a year to go.

I apologise for not knowing the correct words for everything, I hope it is intelligible.

I have lived in Japan for 11 years, currently on spousal visa, unemployed taking care of our daughter but plan to work part time soon.

I am Norwegian and have a bank account back home, but have had no income in Norway for a long time.

My parents do pay me an allowance of about 3万円 every month, in NOK in my Norwegian bank account. Now I'm wondering if I couldn't invest this through my Norwegian banks fund investing system (might not be possible though, currently talking to my bank)

Japan and Norway have a tax treaty in place, though I am not quite sure if I will have to pay tax in Norway and then re calculate the difference in Japan or if I don't pay in Norway, but only in Japan, I will need to look more into this, but if anyone knows I'd love to hear it.

What I'm really wondering is if this is in anyway profitable? If there is income tax on foreign investments, is there a lower limit where I don't have to pay? So I could cash in the investment while the amount is lower than that. Or is the tax so high that there's no point in starting? I don't really plan to speculate, just do some low risk low return kind of investment to slightly increase the amount.
