Underwhelmed

Received the XR the other day and I'm frankly underwhelmed for the most part. Beyond how terribly unconformable it is, my main disappointment are the lenses. After owning the Quest 3, PSVR2 and now testing the XR, no doubt lenses make or break the experience for ME. Quest 3 lenses are just SO good! Legendary at the price point and above!

In comparison, the XR lenses are tiny with vignette if using stock strap, small sweet spot and distracting glare.

Back on the box it goes. Samsung could've done much better.

This is Predator Badlands

Watch how the environment seamlessly matches up with the movie. All of this is playing in 3D using a hagibis capture card with a 4K Fire TV Max with the updated May Android XR update. Any movie that I can play on the Fire TV, I can watch in 3D with both eyes receiving the full 1080p resolution, no HSBS or TopBottom which incurs a resolution loss.

Galaxy XR Update (Early May)

Hello All,

Good news (April update issues resolved)

I’ve been using the new firmware update (version I610UEU2AZD8) for the last couple days. The main issue that resulted from the April update (tracking stuttering/memory leaks) seems to been resolved.

More good news (Controller reliability improved)

In addition to that, while i primarily use the index controllers with this headset for PCVR, the Galaxy XR controllers have seen some improvements in their reliability. I’ve noticed it myself, and those in the Galaxy XR Discord server I’m in have also noticed it.

By no means perfect (Still needs work)

While the main tracking stutter issues and controllers have seen fixes and reliability improvements, both the tracking on the headset and controllers still need a lot of work to hold a candle to their industry competitors.

The headsets tracking can still drift at times, almost like it’s swimming around. This especially happens when close to walls, after very fast movements, or when sitting very still.

The controllers still feel slow compared to Meta’s quest 3 controllers, almost dragging along when doing fast movements.

Keep at it Google/Samsung!

P.S.

Thank you to u/GraceFromGoogle and the rest of the team for addressing the community in the uncertainty of it all.

Promotional offers

Received email for the included promotional offers which should be 9 total but only received 5. Missing are the YouTube offers (which I care mostly about) and a couple others. Anyone know what's up with the missing offers from the email?

I was waiting for the global release. After reading about your struggles with multiple topics, I decided to wait for either the Meta Quest 4 or the Steam Frame.

Thank you for your honest opinions fellas.

Galaxy XR or Play for Dream MR for Wireless PCVR as of now

Does anyone has both and can give me a recommendation on which one to get for wireless pcvr as of now? I can get a used pfd mr on ebay or new galaxy xr from samsung. I heard pfd has steam link 2.0 and galaxy xr still doesn’t have. But I also heard the lenses on pfd are not good compared to galaxy xr. My goal is to have the best visual and lowest latency for wireless pcvr. Thank you!

Honestly, Apple Vision Pro Environments Make Galaxy XR Feel Empty

Is there any way to download or port the Apple Vision Pro environments to Galaxy XR?

The immersive environments on Vision Pro honestly look amazing, especially the cinema and landscape ones. I’m wondering if anyone has found a way to use them on Galaxy XR somehow — maybe through sideloading, custom apps, ports, mods, or even similar downloadable environments.

Has anyone tried this yet?

e port manually, the compatibility and stability are much better than just using an overport conversion.

The app supports HDR, but it wasn't routing through the Galaxy XR's HDR pipeline properly. I actually had to go in and tweak the internal renderer's post-processing pipeline myself. Honestly, the colors and black levels feel significantly improved now.

Spent a good chunk of my holidays grinding on this, but testing it with HDR and ISO 3D files... the image quality is just mind-blowing. It's absolute top-tier.

There are just so many pros to this setup:

  • Since it's file streaming, it doesn't hog heavy resources like Virtual Desktop (VD) does.
  • It supports native ISO 3D file streaming, which yields way better visual quality than the VD + PotPlayer workaround.
  • Also, I always felt the sense of scale and distance in VD's environments was a bit off, making them hard to use. But the middle and back rows in this app? The distance and screen size are absolutely perfect. The 3D depth perception is incredible, too.

Passthrough doesn't work (just like the overport version), but everything else runs flawlessly.

I did notice some slight pixel shimmering dead center in the UI, exactly like the overport version. I dug into it and found the root cause, but it barely affects the actual experience, so I'm just leaving it as is for now. If it really bothers you, switching to a black background makes it disappear completely. Honestly though, even with a virtual environment loaded, you rarely notice it once a movie is actually playing.

I figured some of you guys might still be using the overport version, so here are my recommended optimal settings for the Galaxy XR within the app:

  1. HDR Brightness: 0.40
  2. Brightness: 0.60
  3. Contrast: 0.55 (This gets rid of that slight washed-out/hazy look across the screen).
  4. Theater Lighting: 0.1 to 0.2 (This helps hide the pixel shimmering during playback).
  5. Color Correction: Set to White.
  6. Reverb/Echo: Auto.
  7. Volume Boost: Just a little bit (if you push it too high, the audio will clip/distort).

It feels amazing to finally use the ultimate media player on the Galaxy XR. I'm absolutely loving it.

Galaxy XR Has HUGE Potential for Cinema Viewing… But We Need Better Environments

I’ve been using my Samsung Galaxy XR mainly for movies and honestly the hardware is amazing, but I feel the default environments are still limited for a true cinema experience.

I tested:
- Virtual Desktop + PotPlayer
- Local playback directly on the headset
- Different theater environments

And I noticed something interesting:
Direct playback on the Galaxy XR actually looks MUCH sharper and more immersive than streaming through VD.

I really want:
- more realistic theater environments
- IMAX-style cinema rooms
- darker premium theaters
- better ambient lighting
- customizable screen distance/scale
- more immersive environments like Apple Vision Pro

Right now I feel the Galaxy XR has HUGE potential for movie watching, especially with HDR and 3D movies, but the environments could become much better.

So I wanted to ask the community:

Are there any ways to:
- add custom environments?
- install new theater rooms?
- change the default XR environments?
- use third-party cinema environments?
- improve the sense of scale and immersion?

Also, what are your favorite settings/apps for the best movie theater experience on Galaxy XR?

At first, I said the stock headstrap was comfortable… yeah, I take that back. After longer sessions, it’s actually pretty uncomfortable. Very similar situation to the Quest Pro. BUT I swapped it for the Globular Cluster mod, and I’m not exaggerating, it completely fixed it. Like, night and day. Now it’s genuinely comfortable for long use.

Biggest issue right now: RAM / stability. After about an hour, Virtual Desktop just crashes. Every time. I have to fully reboot the headset to get it working again. And before anyone asks no, it’s not my setup. I’m running a 5090 with a dedicated Puppy S1 router, perfect connection. I’m 100% convinced it’s on the headset/software side. Hopefully they patch this soon because it’s really the main thing holding it back.

Now the good stuff face tracking is insanely good. And the display… I honestly can’t even explain how good it looks. That’s the real selling point of this headset. The jump in image quality compared to Quest Pro is HUGE. Not subtle at all. And the controller are shit

Are there 3d models of the controllers? (for making 3d printed accessories)

I'd like to 3d print little mounts for making a vr gunstock but for that to really work, I need ideally stls of the controllers, does something like that exist?

Wanna know everyone's thoughts on what mods or things you've done to maximize what you get out of it. Also what things did you learn that would be beneficial for others just getting one? I got the full combo with the glasses, controllers, and case.

Best ways to stream PC games over internet?

Hey guys, I just ordered my GXR a couple of days ago and am super excited for it.

I want to use it a lot for playing non-VR games streamed from my PC over the internet with a controller. Is Virtual Desktop the best/only option for this? Or is there any way to possibly use Apollo?

Also, what's the best way to watch 3D videos/movies?

Half-Life: Alyx and Medal of Honor throwing objects issue

The games look fantastic after Quest 3, especially Alyx, but there is a huge issue - you can't throw any objects; they fly in the opposite direction. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Robo Recall on GXR

Today I learned about ovrport and more. Not everything works, but some Quest 3 apps do work on GXR which is pretty cool. Hopefully compatibility will improve over time (or Android XR starts to get native releases).
