I’ve lived in my one bedroom apartment (or flat for us common folk) for around 10 years and have been suffering issues with Serratia Marcescens and black mould. Recently I realised that white mould had also become a problem, I usually expect mould to form on fruit and veg in the fridge but it had been growing in my empty plastic food containers kept in the cupboard near my plates etc. I bought a dehumidifier last week, emptied it on the weekend and went staying with my family for 3 days. I’ve come back to the dehumidifier full (turns itself off) and the humidity at around 73%, emptied it and set it going again. So, question. Is there anything else I should be doing? The heating is always set between 16 (lowest) and 20 degrees depending how cold I am (I feel colder when I’m ill which is pretty often recently). I’m based near the sea on the Northwest coast (Blackpool) if that means anything. Any help is appreciated as I constantly have to use bleach or mould remover to keep on top of the pink and black mould, and now I have a new mould to contend with (albeit white which I always thought was relatively safe).

Curious in Miami : dehumidifiers to reduce in home humidity

Hello fellow Miamians,

As Summer approaches, I’m wondering and have been wondering for a few years now whether it makes sense to invest in a dehumidifier.

My thinking is that if I can reduce the humidity in my condo, it might make the summer more tolerable here.

Has anybody experimented with a dehumidifier, and if so, are you willing to share your experience?

Thank you in advance, please be kind in your response responses.

Time to fix humidity issues

I got a 20 pint Midea Cube yesterday, and during set up the humidity reader read 64% in the main room of my apartment. I let it run overnight (~8:30pm to now 5:30am) and it still reads 61% humidity.

I was just wondering if this is normal and it does just take forever for the levels to get down to a normal level or if I have some other problem, thanks everyone for the input!

What’s the best dehumidifier that actually makes a noticeable difference?

ok maybe i underestimated how annoying humidity can get lol… my room lately just feels kinda damp all the time and it’s driving me insane

also starting to notice that weird musty smell a bit, especially after rainy days

been looking at dehumidifiers but idk which ones are actually worth buying vs just loud electricity eaters

what ended up working for you guys??

I have one of those old houses with a dirt crawlspace that's pretty shallow and wood floors with no insulation (which would mold I'm sure if it was present). No A/C. I am looking into a vapor barrier. Just bought the house.

Meantime, at counter level where I have my little weather station, it shows 49% humidity but at the floor it shows 60%-65% unless I run a dehumidifier.

The dehumidifier is really loud but it does get the floor below 60%, do I need to worry about 65% humidity at floor level when it's < 50% just a couple feet up? I can run some fans, I like air movement anyway.

It's been a really cold spring so I only open windows in the afternoon if it's over 70 degrees out.

I'm worried about PGE charges, I have a VISANI dehumidifier and run it in the living room pretty much nonstop.

Window ac instead of dehumidifier

I'm on my 3rd portable dehumidifier for my basement.Im wondering if anyone's tried a portable ac just sitting on a crate or something and maybe a bucket to catch water.I only use the basement for storage so I'm thinking of trying it.Any thoughts?

Just like the title says. I live in a one-bedroom apartment where because of the building's age there is humidity. We were looking for the most high quality and energy efficient dehumidifier. From all of our research we chose THE CUBE. We were definitely shocked by the size of it...but that's on us. The product itself is amazing. From the amount of time it runs, noise level,etc...its perfect. SO... We thought we would just go on to their website and get a smaller dehumidifier...BUT, they do not offer any smaller ones. That definitely took us by surprise. So can anyone recommend something that is similar to this with the energy efficiency but just half the size. The CUBE just takes too much space in our apartment. A dehumidifier shouldn't be PART of the room...it should just be IN the room lol.

Howdy folks,

I live down in Miami and for as long as I've been down here my skin has been terrible. I wash my face and it'll be oily again in an hour, even if I'm indoors. When I spend a few days in Colorado my face clears right up. Hair looks better than ever.

I work from home so I figure it might help if I just plop a dehumidifier near the computer where I spend most of my time. Worst case scenario it doesn't help with my skin but owning a dehumidifier doesn't feel like a bad idea in a swamp.

I tried to do some research about this and found all kinds of different info, and some of it led me here.

Is it nonsense to consider two small units placed in the places I spend most of my time?

Are there brands/models I should consider or discount if I'm looking for:

  • Doesn't produce a lot of heat (we have plenty here)
  • Is quiet
  • Does it make sense to try to have them running only during the times when I'd be in the rooms where they are located?

Sorry I'm sure you get a ton of "what dehumidifier should I get?" posts but I didn't see a buying guide wiki or anything and I did see some comments like "in order to recommend a dehumidifier we should know more about your specific scenario"

We have an old mobile home beach house that's very humid in the summer. We only go up on the weekends so i need a unit to run while the house is closed up. When we bought the place they left us a dehumidifier that has a setting on it to run 2 or 4 hours on and then 2 or 4 hours off. And it will repeat that cycle for ever unless we turn it off. Im not there not or I'd look up the brand. But its super loud and needs to be replaced. I need that feature again, but I cant seem to find it. We dont have internet so a smart unit isn't really helpful.

Anyone know of anything that will do something like that?
