The failure of Todd’s rock opera was partly his responsibility

I’m not trying to excuse BoJack or his actions, specially considering it was a plot by him. That being said, BoJack’s plot was just hiring a woman to point to a bin with the game, he was the one to pick it up and play.

And you could make the argument that he was addicted and trust me, I know how hard battling an addiction is, but part of it is taking your future and your decisions into your own hands. This is a message that is pushed by the show in regards to BoJack, who doesn’t get a free pass because of addiction and depression

It’s your success that shows you who’s really your friend

Something that my mom says is that it’s your success that will show you who’s your true friend, not the hard times. The reason for that is because it’s easy to be supportive of someone when their situation is bad and when we’re “better” than them, but to be rooting for someone and be happy for them even if they are more successful than you is something that is not common.

Why am I saying all of this? Because this is exactly what’s shown by BoJack sabotaging Todd’s rock opera. He seemed like he was being a friend to Todd by allowing him to crash in his place and helping him with his rock opera, but when Todd seemed like he was starting to outgrow BoJack, his true colors were shown

Help with my Bojack translation thesis

Hi everyone, I literally just created an account for this. I’m working on my final thesis about the Spanish (Spain) translation of Bojack Horseman. While comparing the original and translated versions I encountered something very interesting and I need some help.

On Season 1 Episode 5, around 02:30, we can see the run down Penguin Publishing that has a banner announcing the building is no longer safe to be in. In the Spanish version (Netflix Spain) this banner is translated into Spanish (I’ll try to attach a picture below). Naturally, I tried to check if this banner was in English in the official version, but on all examples I found online the banner is still in Spanish.

If anyone (with a Netflix account on US or UK) could tell me if the banner is still in Spanish in their versions it would help me a lot. It would also be great if you could comment a picture of it so I can put it as proof.

That’s all, if I didn’t make myself clear please do tell me. Thanks!

Thomas Ligotti reference in The View from Halfway Down

Almost finished with my 4th rewatch and only just now caught what I think is a reference to Thomas Ligotti’s book ‘The Conspiracy Against the Human Race’, a philosophically pessimistic, nihilistic, and anti-natalist book.

I think the show-runners were fans of True Detective (judging from the intro song of Philbert which seemed to be a parody of TD Season 1’s intro song) and TCAtHR was a major influence for TD s1.

Curious if anyone agrees or thinks I’m reading too much into it.

Hot Take: Doctor Champ is the worst side character, the only reason he isnt seen as just as bad as the main characters is due to limited screentime

I recently finished my first ever rewatch of Bojack, drilled through it in like a week and a half. My first watch I found Doctor Champ to be a somewhat unremarkable, secondary, neutral character. Sure he played a role in season 6 part one but I kind of just brushed him off.

Upon rewatch though? Doctor Champ is an asshole. He takes zero accountability for himself and actively takes steps against himself and blames Bojack. Bojack's only crime was bringing alcohol to rehab, which ok fair very poor choice, but come on, you're telling me Doctor Champ took a swig of the alcohol, and then decided to chug it like he was fucking parched for water and not once realizing it was alcohol?

And then he made the conscious choice of getting drunk himself at the bar the next day, and Bojack comes to help him. And somehow its Bojack's fault? He did the right thing, he took a man who very clearly is not actually fully sober to rehab and Doctor Champ "wants him to remember what he did to him", bro you chugged the alcohol? And he checked you into rehab to get you help?

And then he procedes to reveal the stuff Bojack told him in confidence in rehab? All to take down the guy who "caused you to relapse" when realistically it was 100% his own fault? I dont care that hes not actually a therapist, firstly he presents himself as a therapist to all the people in rehab, and even at that, thats a super messed up thing to just blurt out about the guy who actively changed under your watch at rehab.

I feel like that sequence of events is just as bad as some of the stuff people hold alot of the main characters accountable for. The only reason hes not seen as just as bad as them is because hes only in a handful of episodes, and by that point the show has made you hate Bojack so much that you cant see that Bojack is not only not at fault in that situation, he is actively doing the right thing

I’ve rewatched Bojack too many times…

And I love the amount of detail that went into this show! Even the little things are given love in this show and I really admire that. Whenever there’s a contract, article, newspapers headline (even the news banner!!), Flip’s whiteboard, etc. they’re always filled out, relevant, and funny. My latest find was the scene where Princess Carolyn is talking to Sadie about getting a sausage patty “not that bs link situation they call sausage in LA” and that’s literally the restaurant’s slogan (which imo adds a layer to how much PC was operating as though she was just trying to close a deal). It really tickled me though, and I wanted to share! I also loveeeee reading the news banners on MSNBSea, they actually make me laugh. The banners were particularly frying me when Todd was the Cordovian prince. Share some of your little hidden favorites!!

P.s.- I don’t care if it’s actually “hidden” or not. They can be obvious!

Bojack Proposal!

I am going to California with my girlfriend this summer! Where I’ll be proposing and making them my wife as well.

We will be near LA and Long Beach California.

While I’ve been looking for pretty nature locations

Bojack Horseman is their all time favorite show which is thankfully based out of California.

While I have watched the show I’m not familiar with its real life locations. I would love to take her somewhere from the show or they inspired the show I’ve been searching on my own but felt someone here would have far more knowledge. I would ask her but I think I’d be ruining it.

Anyone from these spots have any other unrelated Bojack suggestions that is also fantastic. It’s much easier finding spots in the state you live in.

The ultimate Hollywoo joke is the credits claiming Margo Martindale doesn't exist.

I’ve always found it hilariously ironic how we spend seasons watching Margo Martindale play an absurd, gun-toting, bank-robbing version of "Esteemed Character Actress Margo Martindale," only for the credits to roll with that disclaimer:

"This program is a work of fiction. The names, characters, and incidents portrayed herein are fictitious..."

Like... we know Margo Martindale is real! So why is the disclaimer there?

Celebrated my 35th birthday tonight. Apparently my bestie and I share a brain cell

I made the poster, she made the shirt. Neither of us knew the other was doing it

was anyone else shocked to find out that people didn’t like diane?

I remember the first few times watching the show i was immediately drawn to diane’s character, i always found her extremely relatable. when i started interacting with the fandom i was so shocked to find out that people disliked her or even hated her, i never saw anything about her worth hating and i didn’t even think of it as a possibility 🥲 it made me so sad to find out. why do people hate her?

Name that scene 🎨

I have a mild obsession with taking my favourite quotes from Bojack and recreating the scene in a drawing. Here’s another one of my pieces. 🎨 🖼

What if "The View From Halfway Down" was the last episode?

Imagine watching that episode, but instead of the heart machine starting up again, the screen stays black and silent and then the series is *over*. How would you feel? Would the series be more satisfying -or less?

Does a rewatch improve the bojack experience

I watched the show months back and I loved it and now I miss it, I miss what it made me feel because those feelings were unique to that show and those characters.

Regardless even while watching it for the first time I noticed how they often dropped insights and ideas that I didn't fully grasp immediately, and couldn't really dwell on either as the episode moved on quickly.

If you have rewatched the show, were there things that you understood better the second time that you missed while initially watching ?
