Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes - The Viper
Hello everyone!
Now that the game is out I can FINALLY show the assets I made. We went for a low poly / pixel art direction for the ships, because we like it and also because the ships are generally very small on the screen.
In our previous game (Crying Suns) I made the ships with a technique I'll call "sprites stacking", just a sandwich of sprites to give some depth when they rotate. For this production I had to step up my game and make everything in 3D.
On the technical side, we used normal maps to bring some depth to the texture, that I painted by hand. With a reference palette it's really easy to do.
Now meet the Viper Mk2, the base fighter of the game. He's a brawler, brutal at short range, and quick to get from target to target.
What do you think?
The Colonial Fleet party from Dragon*Con 2008
Throwback to my first Dragon*Con in 2008. I had heard the year before that the Colonial Fleet after party was wild and some of the cast showed up. If I remember correctly the bartender didn't show up to the party so Jamie Bamber filled in. So it had been a long day and I was there with all my friends and they got tired of waiting for the cast to show up and left. I decided to stick around and my patience has never paid off quite like this. Eddie gave a long speech expressing gratitude to the fans. There were lots of SO SAY WE ALL chants. Truly one of the most fun nights of my life.
Oh and as a bonus I threw in a picture of Michael Hogan and myself. I brought the props to the photoshoot and before I said anything he said, "Oh I know what were doing with these!" Smash cut to a few days later at the con when I had picked up my photo. I took it to his booth to show him how it came out and how great it was. He asked if I wanted an autograph and I said I couldn't afford it and just wanted to show him the pic. He scoffed and said, "frak it, you're getting an autograph".
Being a part of the BSG fan community while the show was airing and meeting the cast at Dragon*Con several times will always be some of my most cherished memories.
Scattered Hopes
So I decided to download and try the demo for the new BSG game that came out a couple of days ago. I think the game is pretty well done from my first impression. If you are a fan of the 16-Bit storytelling boards and sequences in games like Shadowrun, tactical real-time combat that can be paused, and colony management mechanics all wrapped up in a faithful BSG presentation, download the demo and give it a shot. You literally have nothing to lose.

Original 80's Galactica model video
A friend of mine built a Moebius Models Classic Battlestar Galactica kit in 1/4105 scale, and asked me to record a video for him. this is what I made:

I had a lot of fun doing the special effects. 99% of it is done in camera, ( only the starfield of the first shot, and the multiple ships are a composition. No CGI or AI was used). All the lighting of the spaceship was done for real by my friend, and the rest was possible via proper lighting , camera bloom filters, and moving the model slowly in my rowing machine :):)
obviously, the 30 first seconds and music are from the show intro.
I hope you like it !!!
BSG shirts
Wanted to drop these here for a while but was busy. I hope you like them.
Before you ask where I got them, they were gifts from my wife, and I did not ask her where she got them because she is now my ex-wife.
