Partner visa - manipulation?

hey everyone.

I have a question and i’m going to be a concise as possible. I have a friend whose partner is currently on a student visa, her visa is expiring this year and she is heavily advocating for a partner visa with her bf (my friend). the only problem is and my entire friend group as well as is family is trying to understand is that she is heavily manipulating him to do a partner visa.

Why i would say she is manipulating him is she is using heavy threats of self harm whenever he says he’s not sure if that is the best route to take. She has stated numerous times (in front of friends and family) that she can’t see herself living if they don’t do it and how if she can’t stay in aus she would be better off dying and has also made threats to end her life at her local train station. everytime she does this he gives in and agrees to speak with lawyers and find out the process of completing a partner visa. the other issue is the lack of relationship timeline and also evidence, neither of them live together and or have joint finances but she has told him none of that matters as long as she secures the bridging visa and can stay in the country. everyone has tried to explain to him that evidence does matter and the application may be rejected if it’s lacking sufficient evidence but she’s tried to convince him and everyone that it doesn’t matter and if it does get rejected they can just appeal, but everyone is trying to explain to him the financial impact that would have as partner visas aren’t cheap ( i do also want to add neither of them are in a financial position to 1: pay for the partner visa and 2: pay for the cost of appealing/legal fees related to this) . i also wanted to add she has told him that if he doesn’t do the partner visa “her blood will be on his hands” and everyone including her family “will resent him and hate him”.

my biggest question is, would immigration be able to determine if someone has been essentially coerced through threats into doing a partner visa? would there be a chance of the visa being approved? and what would be the impact of a visa refusal? Has anyone known anyone in a similar situation and how was it handled/ wha was the outcome?

189 GRANTED - SECONDARY TEACHER

“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14

“And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Matthew 21:22

✨ SUBCLASS 189 VISA — GRANTED! ✨

Secondary School Teacher | 80 points

No Agent, All DIY

I don’t even know how to fully put this into words. This journey humbled me. It broke my timelines, tested my patience, and pushed me to surrender control—something I’ve always struggled with. There were moments of doubt, silent prayers, and days when waiting felt heavier than working.

From retaking my IELTS twice, to waiting for NZ Teaching Registration, TRBWA, AITSL outcome, and that long wait for an invitation after lodging our EOI—each step felt uncertain. But looking back now, God was working in every delay, every redirection, every “not yet.”

A reminder that God listens, God provides, and God fulfills His promises in His perfect time. I offer this blessing back to Him. 🤍

What started in 2023 as a simple dream is now something we’re finally holding in our hands, by God’s grace.

Timeline:

• NZQA — December 2023 (availed zero assessment fee)

• IELTS (2nd retake) — October 2024

• NZ Teaching Registration — April 2025

• TRBWA Registration — April 2025

• AITSL Outcome — May 2025

• PTE (Superior English) — June 2025

• Lodged EOI (80 pts) — June 2025

• Received 189 Invite — November 13, 2025

• Lodged Subclass 189 Visa (with spouse) — November 22, 2025

• VISA GRANTED — April 24, 2026

RECEIVED TO FINALISED, Direct Grant (No S56)

“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper…” — Isaiah 54:17

All glory back to You, Lord. 🙏🏻

820 granted! 🥳 (Despite ALL advice on this sub)

Hi, I'm back! I haven't logged onto this account for 18 months since first asking for advice, it was very interesting reading through all the replies just now. Thank you to the mods for not deleting my post, I was sure it wouldn't stay up but I was surprised to see it had! I was also surprised (and happy) to see a recent post advising someone to speak to a migration agent. I wish someone had done that for me.

I'm posting this to update everyone about our application, and to let people in my position know that people on this sub might be wrong, and you should speak to an agent if money isn't an impediment. We did, our lawyer said our case strength was 'average' and our chances were 'good' even though this entire sub said we didn't stand a chance, and our 820 was granted without a hitch in 18 months.

I deleted my original post, but here it is anyway: https://www.reddit.com/r/AusVisa/comments/1dzqgwz/comment/lchk60b/?context=3

And this was my follow up post: https://www.reddit.com/r/AusVisa/comments/1e0r2ue/dont_listen_to_redditors_on_this_sub_speak_to_an/

The mod in the follow up said they would pay to follow my application, so here are the facts:

Dated online for 15 months > got married in Aus while husband was on tourist visa > Applied for 820 in October 2024 > 820 granted in April 2026

Here's the full story:

  • Met online, my now-husband was in Canada, both in our 30s - We dated online for about 15 months, visited each other a lot on tourist visas but never properly 'lived' together.
  • We wanted to apply for an 820 but everyone in this sub said we wouldn't qualify and told us we needed to apply for other visas first, among other pieces of confusing advice. Spoke to a migration lawyer about it, he sounded tired to hear about how wrong redditors can be, and he said we can gather together evidence for an 820 in the three months before we apply, continue to supply evidence until it's granted, and that we should either register our relationship or get married before applying. We didn't want to wait years to call each other husband and wife, so we got married (but registering your relationship is just as good, for anyone else needing advice)
  • Applied for 820 in October 2024 with tons of evidence for each pillar and 4 Form 888s
  • At first the lawyer told us to upload new evidence every month after applying, but after the first two months he said every 3 months was fine. Then three months later after I sent a new batch of evidence he said not to send any more evidence at all because the total amount we've submitted was more than enough (I can be a bit... fastidious when it comes to paperwork haha, since I have a law background myself). This made me a bit nervous, but he turned out to be right.
  • Request for more info in early April 2026: updated police check and medical. Submitted that within a week (drove 1.5 hours to find a clinic with an available appointment)
  • Late April: 820 granted 🥰 We are so ecstatic. We've spoken to our lawyer about planning for the 801 as well.

I wanted to make a small note of two things:

  1. The mod in my second post said "No one told you to "move to Canada," and I can see deleted replies; none mentioned that."

In my first post, if you scroll to the third comment, you'll see a deleted user saying "...People do it lots of different ways, but in your situation where you met online a WHV or you moving to their country to gather evidence would be the most common ways..."

  1. In my second post, a redditor said something that sounded particularly spiteful so I just wanted to address it: "Oof goodluck OP, I cant wait for the agent to be having your fee money when they lodge your application, spend those money for their needs, and then apologized to you when you got the result. I dont care if you wont reply here, but I believe you read all of them"

You're right, I did read them, but not for 1.5 years, and not until the visa was granted. There's a lot to be said for people wielding power and platforms responsibly, sounds like you're not quite there yet.

But the mod was gracious, thank you for that. And I hope this post stays up too. I'm now about to sign out of this account for good, so please don't reply to this expecting me to reply, I won't.

The only reason I posted this at all is for two reasons: the first is already mentioned, to let newcomers know that an agent/lawyer should be their first stop. And second is to let the people on this sub know that a huge amount of the stress my husband and I experienced when first looking at visas came entirely from this sub. Some of the advice came from a good place, I know, but a lot was strangely spiteful/sarcastic/demeaning for no reason. I felt this had to be said, for the sake of how anxious we both were 18 months ago. Please be nicer to newbies, everyone.

Best of luck to everyone with their visas!

Commercial pilot license and visa advice

Hi, I have a very niche question and I was wondering if anyone with experience might have any insight.

Background:
I'm 27, looking for a career change. I've always been interested in becoming a pilot, but didn't pursue it. Currently I'm a UK citizen in Australia on a Working Holiday Visa. I was looking at starting a (500) Student Visa and applying for flight schools. I have seen that if I enroll in a CRICOS Approved Course, I may be eligible for a Post Graduate Visa (485) after I complete my studies and extend my stay for a few more years.

My question is, would this be a beneficial way to land an entry level job and build up hours and eventually apply for a more permanent skilled visa?

I'm trying to think long term in order to stay in Australia as it's my dream to stay. However, the visa process is long and complex so I don't want to waste any of those precious years.

Pretty sure I fell for a visa scam - any guidance would be appreciated

I’m from Ireland visiting Australia for two weeks. I applied for my visa today through https://e-visa.ie

Completely unlike me to fall for any scam and I’m really annoyed at myself but I looked into it more just now and apparently this could be a scam. I’m pretty sure it is. Does anyone know if it is for certain?

If it is or I’m unsure, would it be best to just apply through the official ImmiAccount website? (Which yes I know I should have done in the first place, I was an idiot). Or should I leave it a couple of days and see if it actually isn’t a scam? I’m nervous if I go ahead and apply through what I know for sure is legitimate that if the original website that I used actually is legit, this could mess up my visa entirely.

(I’ve never had to apply for a visa before incase that isn’t obvious)

I’d really appreciate any help with this.

Small company trying to sponsor me for 482 visa. Is it realistic?

Hi all,

I'm an accountant on a graduate visa expiring January 2027. My employer is willing to sponsor me but has never done it before, so we'd be starting from scratch with SBS approval.

Company details:

  • 3 employees including me (regional)
  • public practice

My occupation is on the CSOL so that's fine. Main concerns are:

  1. Has anyone been sponsored by a very small business successfully?
  2. Realistic timeline from SBS application to visa grant?
  3. I still have a WHM visa unused.. better to use that as backup or stay on bridging visa while waiting?

Any experiences or advice appreciated, thanks!

485 Pathway with Visa with less than 92 weeks

Hello, I'm just finishing a Master's degree which is accredited for 78 weeks, so I'm aware that I don't meet the criteria to directly apply for a 485. I have a few questions on alternatives and i would be immensely greatful for any advice. If I decide to do another course to bridge the gap, do I need to apply for a new student visa? Does this second course need to be of a certain type, i.e., can it just be a diploma or does it need to be another Bachelor's or above? If this option fails, is a working holiday visa my only option to come back and get sponsorship?

Subclass 189/190 visa for nurse/midwife

Hi everyone,

I’m looking into applying for the above visa and just wanted to check.

I’m currently early stages- booked my English PTE exam and studying for it.

Requested past registration nursing letters etc.

My question is.. in October I will be 8years qualified as a nurse which will give me maximum points in that criteria.

Would it be ok to submit my EOI in August with my skills listed as 8 years plus? I would presume the likelihood of being called for documentation in that timeframe would be slim. Or should I play it safe and only submit EOI once I hit the 8 years plus mark in October? I have heard people can be waiting a year plus to be invited. Thanks in advance

Canadian with Australian father

I have a cousin who was born in Canada in the 1960s. Her father was born in Australia in the 1920s. She would like to visit Australia for a holiday. She has never claimed Australian citizenship by descent.

Can she enter and leave on just a Canadian passport or will the system flag her as a possible Australian? Does she need an Australian passport?
