Typical teenagers in China

I'm a Chinese 14yo who grew up in canada. this summer, I'm going to visit China for the first time and I wanted to make some friends with people my age!! so I'm curious about how they usually act and what's popular among the Chinese teens.

China is better to visit than to live in: agree or disagree?

Would love to hear people’s thoughts on this one! Obviously China is quite modern and is quite nice in a lot of ways but cost of living can be high, job market difficult, etc. Do you think it’s better as a place to live or as a place to visit (for family, tourism, etc)?

what are the stetrotypes for specific social media platforms in china?

here in the west, there are a variety of stereotypes for different social media. twitter is seen as horrible and toxic, reddit is seen as full of circlejerking dweebs, tumblr is full of young nerds (and often type in a specific, easily identifiable way), etcetera.

do chinese social media platforms also have these kinds of specific stereotypes?

Any good media sources of chinese mythology?

Hey, I want to write a the apothecary diaries (an anime and light novel series) fanfic with kpop demon hunters as AU (alternate universe). So since the apothecary diaries is set in China, I would like to have chinese mythology and culture in it instead of korean one. To make it as good and respectful as possible I would need to research a lot for it. I thought that maybe some of you know some good media sources for that, it could be anything like youtube videos, online articles, podcasts and more. I hope that wasn‘t too weird of me to ask.

Mofcom scholarship

hi everyone,

I have received pre-admission letters from three different universities. Recently, my government announced the MOFCOM-CSC scholarship, and the deadline is May 3.

However, I just found out that there is a restricted list of only 26 universities eligible for the MOFCOM program. Unfortunately, the universities I received pre-admission from are part of the regular CSC program, not the MOFCOM list.

At this point, I’m feeling quite confused and worried. Is there any chance to obtain a pre-admission letter from one of the MOFCOM-approved universities in such a short time? Has anyone been in a similar situation or has any advice?

I would really appreciate any help or guidance. Thank you very much.

Music recommendations

Hello everybody! Im planning to start exploring the world of contemporary China. I am quite tired of the western narrative that everything China related is bad, so i wanted to form my own opinion through exploration(in general i just want to enrich myself as a person). I have downloaded red note, i play some hoyo games but apart from that i find it hard to get in touch with chinese culture primarily because of the online firewall that makes it hard to access chinese media.

Music for me has always been a force that pushes me forward to get a deeper understanding of a nations way of life and language. For example, two years ago i discovered japanese city pop, jazz fusion and j-pop and that pushed me to start studying japanese. Because of the cultural revolution however it appears that the chinese music scene didnt develop a strong jazz fusion scene and so far the only artists representing that genre were from Taiwan(they are amazing but im looking for someone from the mainland).

So do you guys have any recommendations? Any type of artist would be good to be heard but as i stated above i do have a preference for jazz fusion and j-pop(i would be interested to hear the chinese equivalent of j-pop). I know that Spotify is banned in China so where can i discover these artists? Thank you for your help and recommendations in advance.

questions regarding peking university's master of international relations programme (foreigner)

hey everyone! i just finished a master of laws at an african university and i also have a bachelor of laws degree. i hope to go to peking university to get a masters in international relations/international studies in about three years. i'm gonna work to make sure everything is in order (mandarin, work and research experience etc.) before then.

i'm curious if someone who went to peking university for international relations can tell me what it's like (bonus points if you were/are a postgrad student, a foreigner and/or black) . how's the campus life? course rigour? i've already looked through the module list and i'd like to know what were your favourites. how likely are you to land a job as a teaching assistant as a foreigner? my country has a bursary agreement with china but do you know of any others? how do the people in the area treat black people? social life (does it exist?)?

this isn't an exhaustive list, any info you have would be great!

Gifts For Family

My husband and I are traveling to China from the US for his cousin's wedding in a couple of weeks. This will be my first time meeting some of his family in China, including his aunt and the cousin who is getting married, and I would like to bring them some gifts from the US. They're in Shenyang and his aunt and uncle are middle aged, the cousin is a male in his early 30s. What would people in northeastern China appreciate in addition to the red envelope we intend to give as a wedding gift?

Is cheating really that normal in China?

I’m sorry this is so ignorant but based on the entertainment content it seems like it’s almost normalized in society/culture? Just curious for no reason at all.

TO CLARIFY Chinese shows and stuff seem to normalize it? Social norms are what I’m more interested in getting some insight one. Like if you cheat on your partner and tell your friends how do they react? Is it all fine? Do you feel guilt? If you get cheated on do you leave right away? Is cheating a deal breaker?

How can my husband improve his Youtube content about China?

Hi everyone, I’m Chinese, and my husband is Irish. We live in Ireland, but travel back to China pretty often to visit my parents. My husband is absolutely obsessed with the "real" China and started a Youtube to show the awkward, funny, and beautiful moments he encounters.

His birthday is April 24th, and I’m trying to boost his organic reach as a surprise. A view, a follow, or a nice comment would absolutely make his day.

And if you have a moment to look at his content, what should he do more of? Thank you so much!

I wanna order some simple summer clothes from China but I’m trying to stay on the cheaper side

I’m looking for easy basics like crop tops, sundresses, and simple sandals/shoes, nothing fancy at all. If you know any good apps that are cheap and actually worth downloading please let me know.

DALIAN HANDOM CHEMICALS CO., LTD. Aka “John Wang” is real guys. Why haven’t there been any real reviews for him yet? Here’s mine.

Someone dm’d me a WhatsApp number for “John Wang” a few weeks ago while looking for Reta sources in other subs. I did about 30 seconds of research (stupid) before reaching out and pretty much immediately placed an order.

Immediately after I found some comments expressing skepticism about how legit he was and how they hadn’t received tracking numbers. Ofc I freaked out realizing it was probably too good to be true, I freaked out but since I had already sent payment via btc, there was nothing I could do.

John assured me it was on the way and that I’d get it soon. I didn’t actually believe him but imagine my surprise when he came through with it about 3 days later.

It took a few days to get to the UPS office in Hong Kong, and from there about 5 or so to get to me in NYC. All in all about 2 weeks from the time I placed it.

I have pics below of what I ordered and I’m happy to answer any questions you may have about him or my experience. I’ll even post screenshots of my WhatsApp conversation with him someone wants. And before you ask, yes they are working *very* well.

There’s tons of comments talking about how nice this mysterious Chinese man is. It’s adorable to read in some cases. That said he is as nice as they imply — so nice in fact, that I promised to write this review as a means of thanking him.

TLDR John is legit and a good dude at that. I’m happy to give some relief to those who placed an order but are now on the fence or proof to any of the doubters.

Was Jack Ma disappearance back in 2020 part of a larger crackdown on the fianciarisation of the economy?

Hi,

Most articles I read in Western Media chose to depict the disappearance of Jack Ma back in 2020 along the authoritarian vs. free speech human right angle. Some others, maybe more on topic, along the lines of the regulator's authority vs fintech loose cannons angle.

As it's been reported that Jack Ma did criticise the CCCP, something that should have had no consequence in a more democratic society, I do not put the authoritarian nature of this situation into question.

But I also listened to an interview (this one) where the guest said that Jack Ma's disappearance was part of a larger crackdown of Chinese authorities against the financiarisation of the economy.

Specifically, he says that the 2020 Ant Group IPO, the largest up to this date, "would have created a financial system similar to the West in 2005", which the Chinese regulator absolutely did not want because of all the financial risk associated to this model.

So in addition to the authoritarian reason for the crackdown, which I do not challenge, this series of event can be framed as a deliberate choise to avoid the securitisation of the economy, and all the associated financial (subprimes crisis), and politicial (tech billionaires oligarchs) risks that comes with it?

Is this a correct depiction of this situation?
