Nostalgia purchase to reminisce my child hood watching my dad from the backseat driving us around ❤️ she’s a beauty!
Center diff locked, stuck in ice up to the steering rack - how?
What’s up guys. Got a lot more intimate with my rig this weekend after digging it out of the ice for 2 hours in this spot. Wondering if there’s any advice y’all could give a noob off roader? 1.5 front lift / 2 rear, new 31” AT4Ws aired down to 15 PSI, center locker (limited), stock “skid plates”
I had a couple requests to see the new engine… Today we made it to the RedWoods Forests of CA. Tomorrow we start heading towards Utah!
another chunk of mileage out of the way!!! a few have asked for a picture of the new engine.
99 limited with e-locker + multimode transfer case. 220k miles. Since I know it’s gonna get asked, I let it go for $15k cash. To some, that price is insanely high but that’s what it was worth to me. When you sell your car you price it to what YOU want to get out of it, not what others tell you it’s worth. I had tons of people saying I would never get that much but you just have to wait for the right person to come along that wants it bad enough. I didn’t want to sell it but I also wasn’t gonna turn down that much cash. It went to a good home and someday I’ll be back in another one. Its been real 4Runner fam 🫶🏼
Visited the Grand Canyon yesterday, now I am in San Francisco driving the CA-101 north!!!
on a 6000 miles + road trip across the USA in a supercharged 3rd GEN!
Would love some ideas on how to fix
Rear differential cover is seeping due to rust. What have some of you done to fix it? Anything easy? Welding involved? Let me know it got worse since the winter, obviously.
Had already asked this question in a previous post and someone responded. Just looking for more fixes
Cat?
I got this last month. I replaced the bank 1 o2 sensor and it has been off for almost a month now and then it came back on today. So I’m assuming it’s most likely the cat that needs to be replaced? Just want to see what you guys think
Rubbing on wheel well
wheels have a -10 offset and the tires are 285/70/17 but when i turn left the tires rubs on this bolt. Any recommendations to fix this?
Where’s my high milers
For those of us with over 350k
Anyone know why this vacuum switching valve is so loud?
I replaced the vacuum hoses and actually removed a vacuum leak and even tried replacing the VSV. They both still sound the same. The only time I can get rid of the noise is when I plug the hose like in the video or I put the hose with a known vacuum leak back on.
Interior Detail
I extracted a lot of what looked like spilled soda.
On one hand I feel like it could be better. On the other I spent about 14 hours on this.
Let me know what you think.
Wash and windows are next.
Purchasing a 3rd Gen 4Runner
I've been looking to get into a capable vehicle as a winter daily, and have only ever heard great things about the 3rd generation of the 4Runner.
One just so happened to pop up on the market locally, and i've messaged the seller and will be checking it out tomorrow! Listed at $5,500 CAD ($4,000 USD), and being open to offers.
It is a 1999 Toyota 4Runner in Imperial Jade Mica. Pretty high milage having been highway drive plenty, and sits at 380,000 kilometers (236,000 miles). Exterior as seen in the attached photo looks to be in pretty good condition and the seller states there is minimal rust- will be checking the frame underneath thoroughly regardless. One thing the seller has mentioned is that there is an oil leak.
The car was originally from Ontario Canada and has now been brought locally to Manitoba.
On top of having done some research regarding the platform, I've been fortunate enough to be able to ask friends with the same generation about things to look for, some which being; the infamous pink milkshake found on the radiator, the oil leak found on the valve cover from a lack of RTV when replacing the gasket, the lower ball joint rusting out, and of course severe frame corrosion from rust.
I'd love to hear any other tips on what to look for when buying, possible cost of fixing/replacing components, if the car is a seemingly good deal (Other similar listings on the market are closer to $8,000 CAD), and will definitely be following up on the thread tomorrow (32-33hr from posting this) updating with anything I've come across and any questions that might pop up.
Thank you!
Just proud of my kid
My son turned 16 last December. My work buddy had an old ‘97 4Runner that was his third car and not getting much use. We bought it for my son’s first car. He’s a great kid and pretty mechanically inclined. One prerequisite of the sale was to help swap the LBJs. Two weeks ago we completed the valve cover gaskets–only took us 10 hours over two days. This weekend we had planned to go off road with it for the first time.
One hour into a two hour trip the battery failed. A friend traveling separate from us helped source a new battery, and then we ended up swapping the alternator in an AutoZone parking lot an hour after that.
Undeterred, electrical systems fixed, we continued to the trailhead. It had been a long day already, but we had a blast on the trails. The old Runner was a beast, and performed better than we could have imagined.
As a father, I was so proud to have put new life into this old car alongside my son, and seen some of his dreams realized as we conquered some amazing terrain together. Notwithstanding the help that we received from everyone else on the trail who only wanted to see him succeed as well.
‘97 4Runner Limited 5vz-fe 4wd with the rear locker. 189,721 miles. Still going strong. Cheers to all of you that inspire us to keep rolling.

Should I buy this 2000 4Runner
(Description in last photo) Auto, 250,000miles, Listed for $5000 cad ($3600 usd), says he’s open to offers. Also needs pads and rotors. What do you guys think, is it worth the trouble? Body looks really clean
How the heck would I go about repairing this?
I was given this 97 4Runner for basically free and 99.9% of the frame is either rust free or could be reinforced with plating but I have no idea how I would go about getting this fixed. Any suggestions? There is a part number for the section of frame (51502-35100)

My D doesn't light up, should I be concerned?
Noticed on my drive to work this morning that the D marker is not lighted up. Park and reverse light up when I shift, but not D. Should I be concerned? Or is this one of those 25+ year old thing I should just ignore
