Introducing Tomáš: King of Rejection (a multiplatform point & click adventure in the best tradition of Leisure Suit Larry) and GLAND, the custom IDE to make it all happen

Just thought I'd create a new post to share my progress.

After having been sick with the flu most of last week, I spent all of Sunday and Monday working on GLAND (my engine is called SCUNK and its mascot is a skunk. So the naming convention just fit, while also staying true to the tradition established by the fine folks at LucasArts with SCUMM, BYLE, CYST, FLEM, MMUCAS and the unreleased SMEGMA), a new IDE for developing (primarily*) point and click adventure games that can be run in both ScummVM and a custom bytecode VM I maintain for ports to more exotic or lower end systems (Atari ST, Amiga 500/1000, 3DO, Sega Saturn, PS1. You name it, I probably got it).

The main goal in developing GLAND is to create a user-friendly development system that enables non-developers to contribute to indie game development and even complete laymen to start (and hopefully finish) their own little games.

The final release will ship with the ability to both package and test games in emulation (for Amiga, Atari ST, PS1, Sega Saturn, N64 and 3DO) as well as transfer the final binary to the target hardware via common USB debug protocols.

The final release of GLAND will be made available completely free-of-charge.

That being said, I still need help getting my game funded so I can work on this care-free.

* Technically, the scripting language is Turing-complete so you're not really limited to just point and click adventure games. In fact, I have made several non-adventure games in that engine and GLAND will include non-adventure templates as well.

3DO FZ-10 disc stopped reading and making odd noises, any advice?

Hey all, I was trying to setup wireless controllers today so I could play some 3DO and ran into the issue described in my header. I was hoping to get some advice on maybe what is needed to get it back up and running, it had been working fine until today :( I took a video to help illustrate the sound it's making if that helps, thanks all!

GoldStar PSU Mod – Replaced 110V Transformer with 15V + External Switch

I finally finished modding my GoldStar unit.

I replaced the original 110V power setup with a 15V power adapter feeding two DC buck converters — one set to 5V and the other to 12V. I originally considered using 12V directly, but because of voltage loss/dropout issues, using a 15V source gave much more stable outputs on both rails.

I also installed an ODE, so the system now runs perfectly without discs.

For the power LED, I removed the original LEDs and resistor from the old power board and rewired them to the new 5V line so the original front LEDs still work.

I also bypassed the original CTL control wire and added an external power switch instead.

Sorry for the non-professional 100% DIY work 😅 but the console is working perfectly now. Honestly, 110V power is really annoying for me, and I wanted to avoid external step-down transformers because I’ve accidentally fried too many devices in the past.

Arcade Stick to buy, Arcade Stick Mods for the 3DO!

Is it possible to mod a fightstick like Hori to work with the 3DO?

I'm aware the digital stick exists but just incase I want something with a little bit more kick, are there any modern fightsticks made specifically for the 3DO? I'm looking for something that resembles the performance of the MvC2/DOA5 fightstick for Xbox 360.

Spreadsheet of confirmed M2 games (1997 onwards)

I've dedicated pretty much my whole week speculating about the M2's library had it released as a game console, and along with the spreadsheet, here's some additional notes...

  • A 1996 issue of REAL Magazine made very clear that Trouble Decker (the dolphin demo) was only meant as a tech demo, but I'm not sure if tech demos would've counted towards "in-development titles" or not.
  • 3DO Magazine Japan - June 1996: Panasonic Wondertainment head Takeshi Matsuo confirms the existence of "table games" on M2, along with the usual arcade/action stuff
  • Edge - October 1996: Wondertainment software producer Hiroyuki Sakai confirms two internal games in development based off the prerendered demos from E3 1995, a racing game and a first-person shooter. He does not mention Studio 3DO once.
  • London Gazette - March 1997: Omcourt Limited (t/a Perceptions) liquidated on the 28th of February that year.
  • EGM - May 1997: confirms the existence of an M2 update to Tokimeki Memorial, along with a soccer game (Heat of Eleven) and a new racing IP. Also rumours of a Street Fighter III port and sequel to Strider.
  • Ultra Game Players - July 1997: A former 3DO employee confirms ASCII, Enix, Hudson, Treasure and Namco as M2 licensees.
  • NextGen - August 1997: Boss Game Studios and Iguana are confirmed US developers. Boss' Top Gear Rally from later that year lists Panasonic Wondertainment head Takeshi Matsuo under Special Thanks.
  • Edge - January 1998: the M2 was shown at Digitalmedia World Expo in November 1997, and showcased three games (Trouble Decker, a scrolling shoot-em-up called Memory Breaker and Digital Dance Mix).
  • Genki was long rumoured to be making a shooter similar to Panzer Dragoon. Considering a Sega game was there to show off the tech, third parties definitely weren't off the table. The Jan-Feb and Mar-Apr issues of 3DO Magazine Japan show screenshots of their work done for the system.
  • Multiple magazines confirm Wondertainment did develop two publically-released games, just not under their own name in the end: Web Mystery for Dreamcast and Goraku Ou Tango for WonderSwan.
  • Doda - March 2014: Head of Zener Works confirms they were behind one of the system's supposed launch titles.
  • Other companies and games were confirmed for M2 before 1997, but Panasonic ghosting every Western developer makes me believe most of those wouldn't have seen the time of day... at least not on the M2.

Nearly 80 games in total, more than 40 from Japan... what other games do you think would've made it onto the M2 had it released?

To anyone who has an M2, has anyone tried playing audio, photo or video CDs on it?

This early casing for the M2 shows it once had support for all these formats, so I wonder if that functionality was kept for the final kiosk model?

Also I know the 3DO has a cool visualiser for playing audio CDs, and I was wondering if the M2 has a similar function. Maybe it could give us a glimpse into what the console menu would've looked like outside of the very 90s-looking Storage Manager.

Pick one

Which one is your favorite and why?

I remember the unlimited hours we spent on Way of the Warrior

Our entire neighborhood used to stay over for long night challenges… wish i can go back! That was more than 30 years ago if my memory serves me right. The good old days

3DO Icebreaker insane quest

I continue the quest to beat all 150 levels of Icebreaker for 3DO on Insane difficulty level.

Tonight I beat level 133: Ninth Circle

That leaves just 4 more! Too bad three of them are so hard, I have only beat them on Medium level and they are likely impossible.

Bast shooter ever. I've been addicted since 1995, and I think its great.

Best cable to use for 3DO for RetroTink 4k Pro?

Just came across an absolutely insane ODE modded FZ-10 on the Facebook marketplace and grabbed it immediately. It’s also modded with a 240p flipper switch but didn’t have an s-video cable with it at time of sale. Does anyone have recommendations on a quality s-video and stereo cable for running through a RetroTink 4k Pro?

Worth switching from ArcadeCrown to another ODE?

I'm having these sporadic issues with the Arcade Crown on FZ-1, where sometimes for no apparent reason refuses to boot after the fist splash screen or sometimes freezes with bin/cue files that perviously worked without problems.

I tried several USB drives, defragment the partitions and even on another FZ-1 (both recapped). I also asked for a replacement, which the shop was kind enough to send me another for free.

I'm not sure if the issues are due to Fixel software not being completely compatible with the hardware or if the hardware is iffy.

Has anyone had these issues? Are these solved switching to any other solution? If so… which one would you suggest?

I would go with the actual Fixel hardware but I cannot find for a fair price anywhere. Unless I'm missing something.

Frankly I'm getting worried of restart the console so many times to get it work.

All that's left of my old 3DO system from years ago is a CD of the Horde. I'd love to play it again on my laptop (don't have space/interest in buying new console). I tried ripping it using an emulator but it just didn't work, GPT had me troubleshooting in circles for hours. I've just about given up. Help appreciated!
