Open world fantasy/adventure rpgs?

So I'm feeling in the mood for a new game. It's been a bit since I've bought something new and I'm feeling the urge for it! I'm specifically looking for an open world adventure/fantasy rpg game, so any recommendations along those lines would be greatly appreciated.

Here's some info about me/what I want for this game.

  1. I want something super open world. With the idea that I can just explore and go wherever I want. Bonus points if I can get super sidetracked and completely avoid the main quest for as long as I want. But honestly I just want some good and satisfying exploration.

  2. I'm a high fantasy nerd, so I love games that are in a medieval/high fantasy setting. This isn't a requirement, but it is my preference.

  3. I'd really like some good character customization. This isn't a requirement but I love getting to make my own character from the get-go.

  4. I've already played BOTW/TOTK, Skyrim, Elden Ring, Oblivion Remastered, and Baldur's Gate 3 and loved all of them. Any games like these will definitely catch my interest.

  5. I have both a Nintendo switch 2 and a steam deck, so games can be on either system.

That's it! I'd appreciate any recommendations, hopefully I can get a new game so I don't gotta play through BG3 again lol

Question exchange, but with all my apocalypse guys so far!

I've put a lot of work into developing my apocalypse world, and I'm bored at work for the next hour, so let's do a question exchange! I've got six characters here and I would love to be asked any questions about them!

  1. Maryn, one of the main protagonists of my story. Shy and socially awkward. An excellent engineer and scavenger with an uncanny sense for scrap metal. So awkward and so weird, a lot of people are creeped out by him. Drowning in grief since the death of his mother. For some reason Rowan thinks Maryn is cool.

  2. Rowan, the other main protagonist. Weird and overexcited boy who's just happy to be living life. A former member of a cult that worships an ancient star god, Rowan finds himself a part of Maryn's life in the wastelands and he couldn't be happier.

  3. Rocket, a settlement guard who seems to just hate Maryn for no reason. Very by the books and logistical, doesn't seem to like Maryn and his nonsense. Maryn doesn't get it and thinks they're friends. She actually cares a lot about the little weirdo, but wouldn't ever admit it.

  4. Robbie, a scavenger in the Yuma wastelands. Loves to steal books and trinkets, likes to hoard them if he can. Taught himself how to read and write, he's very smart and loves to learn. Very good friends with Maryn, the two of them have little crushes on each other but they're also both super awkward teenagers, so neither of them will be confessing anytime soon.

  5. Kass, the leader of my star god cult and an antagonist. Once an acolyte of this cult, Kass has recently taken the position of prophet and is determined to bring the star god back to Yuma. He's calm and kind on the surface, but an absolute maniac under that calm facade. A wolf in sheep's clothing, but it's the case where the wolf has deluded itself into believing it's a sheep too.

  6. Vivian, Maryn's mother. She died several years before the story takes place. Maryn has very fond memories of his mother and was extremely close with her. He tends to idolize his mother. In reality, his mom was a scoundrel and criminal, think like a wild west outlaw type character.

Please ask me any questions about these guys, either as individuals or as a collective! I've got more characters planned, these are just the ones I've done art for.

In exchange I'll ask a question about your oc! Make sure to tell me a bit about them so I can actually ask a good question (otherwise I'll just answer my question and won't give you one in return).

The "birth" of a god

I feel like I could have made this better, but I wanted to throw something together before I went to class today. Originally my Eldritch deity that caused the apocalypse was the sun itself, but I think I'm changing it to a nearby star that ultimately hatches (or awakens?) into our apocalypse causing deity.

I might make a better version of this later on, but for now here you go! One star-egg and one deity about to wreck a world. Here's how my apocalypse begins, when an eldritch space deity hatches out of a star and awakens. This causes massive solar flares that wipes out technology, large amounts of radiation that results in mutations in people and animals, and the general incomprehensible appearance of this being results in mass insanity and hysteria.

Yumites (the "humans" of my world)

Here's some examples of the Yumites, the main species of my apocalypse world (basically Yuma's equivalent to humans). I'm slowly working on populating my world with characters, and I wanted to show off a few of the designs I've got. I'm still figuring out how I draw these guys and what sort of features they have, but I like what I've got so far. Enjoy a few colored doodles of some characters I've developed so far.

Yumites are vaguely human, vaguely animal, really leaning more into being weird goblin-esque creatures. Ear and tail shapes can vary from person to person. It tends to be a tradition, especially for folks living in the apocalyptic wastelands, to decorate their tails with trinkets and keepsakes (so looking at that can tell a lot about a person's interests). They have an excellent sense of hearing, with that being the primary sense of this species. Some folks are naturally gifted with magic, but it's not traditional spellcasting magic. Instead it's a deeper connection with the natural world (for example, the character Maryn has a sixth sense for scrap metal). The folks we're looking at here live in a scrubland/arid environment, I'm taking inspiration from a bit of the American Southwest deserts but also Eastern Washington and Oregon.

Main inspirations for the species include some book I read as a kid that I have very vague memories of (no idea what book, I just have a super vague memory I'm going off of) and the Zonai from Tears of the Kingdom.

I'm still working out how this species looks and functions, but I wanted to do something different from humans, so here we are. Funky goblin creatures is what I've got, and I really like them. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Question exchange time, this time featuring Robbie!

As I continue to develop the world of Yuma, I want to keep doing question exchanges like this! It's fun, it helps me develop the characters of the world, and I get a chance to see what everyone is working on! So we're doing my weekly question exchange, this time featuring the newest addition to the Yuma cast, Robbie!

This guy here is another wasteland dweller and scavenger, living in the southwestern part of Yuma. He's quite good friends with Maryn, the two of them are the same sort of "weird" and get along really well with each other. They might have little crushes on each other too, I haven't decided the route I want to go with romance.

Anyway, this guy is a bit of a historian, or he likes to call himself that. He mostly just likes to hoard and read books. He also is obsessed with shinies and trinkets and sees the most useless junk and scrap as something valuable. He's a bit of a klepto and hoarder (hence why him and Maryn get along so well lol). I cannot disprove him being a raccoon or fox or other woodland creature that gained sentience lol, he is very much a weird little feral creature. The name Robbie is short for Robin, but most people just call him Rob or Robbie.

Please ask me any questions about him! It can be about his background, about his life in the world of Yuma, about him as a character, about his relationship with Maryn...this character is super new and I really want to develop him.

In exchange, I'll ask questions about your character! Make sure to tell me about them, I will not ask a question if you just drop your ocs picture and run. I want this to be a constructive workshop for both of us, so you've gotta tell me about your character so I can ask good questions.

Another Yuma apocalypse character! (Name recommendations needed!)

I'm continuing to populate my apocalypse setting, so another day another side character! I'm so happy I decided to take on a more "animalistic" approach to the residents of Yuma, because now they have tails and I can decorate said tails with trinkets :D

I would love some name suggestions. Currently I'm considering Robbie (short for Robin). He's an adaptation of my DND character who shares the same name. But I would love other name suggestions if people have them!

For context, I'm slowly working on a post-apocalyptic slice of life comic in my spare time. It's like if you took the desert setting of Fallout, gave it the tone of Adventure Time, and stuck an eldritch sun god and a ton of existential dread in there for good measure. That's my project.

I'm always working on character designs, and one of the key things I want for design motifs throughout my apocalypse characters is for them to look very funky. It's an apocalypse after all, and several hundreds of years after the apocalypse on top of that. The world is already a fictional setting, so my characters are not gonna be normal humans. I actually really like leaving their species up for interpretation, and I'll never confirm what they are. Fae? Mutated humans? Mutated animals? Some weird thing? That's up for the audience to decide!

I'm trying to really draw them funky. Their ears are weird, their heads and faces are weird, I'm giving them tails now too. I wanna ask if I'm going too far with this and if it's too weird, or if I've got the exact amount of weirdness to get the idea I want across? Should I keep at this, or give them more "typical" features? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I'm gonna draw the rest of the party eventually, but the characters I've been most excited to draw is our rogue Robin (me!) and our cleric Solune. Me and the girl who plays Solune decided that these two were gonna act like siblings, and it has absolutely set the tone for their relationship ever since.

Enjoy some really quick doodles of Robin and Solune, all based off of real moments in our campaign so far.

Worldbuilding sketches: dome settlements

I'm trying to figure out setting a bit more for my world, so have some quick sketchbook doodles of the dome settlements of Yuma!

These dome settlements were created before the initial collapse, as a way to protect major cities and towns from the sun. Although it didn't help in the collapsing of society (by the time they were built the world was too far gone), the domes are still around. Gone are the big cities, and in their places are ramshackle settlements and homes. But these places are some of the safest locations a person can be in Yuma due to it being such a community based location. You're not alone, not exposed to the elements, and have limited exposure to the rot (hopefully).

Woah is that an antagonist for my apocalypse comic? Yeah! Here's my sun cult leader. He doesn't have a name yet, so I would love any name recommendations for him. My only condition for names is I want to avoid any obvious sun names (because that's just too easy).

This guy is intended to be soft-spoken, manipulative, and incredibly charismatic. I originally had planned on my cult leader being older (sort of like an old priest type character), but something about an evil theater kid just drew me in lol. He's recently taken control of a small group of cultists that worships the sun in my apocalypse universe, having "ascended" to the role after the death of their initial leader. He's constantly forcing a face of "calm", but is known to lose it in private and let his real bits of insanity show. There's a lot of Tally Hall songs that I feel like sum up this guy well lol.

He has a massive savior complex, believing The Sun is what will cure Yuma of The Rot, and he will be the one to bring the sun back and save the world. He is a victim of abuse at the hands of the old cult leader (which does play into why and how the old cult leader died). His intentions are relatively good (on the surface), and I want him to be a sympathetic villain, but he's still a bad guy doing bad things.

His design is still a work in progress, mostly when it comes to colors. I just know I want him to look soft and unassuming, very much a wolf in sheep's clothing. Any name recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

POV: You're an apocalypse mutant, living your life, when suddenly two teenagers come up to tell you how ugly you are.

I was rewatching some old PM7/MandJTV pokemon videos recently and this audio came up. it seemed way too perfect for Maryn and Rowan, so I made a quick animatic for it

u/ravio_1300 — 15 days ago

My art always starts as really stupid pencil doodles lol. I always have fun making them and I think it's a great way to show off their character and just be silly. So I'm asking people to show off their silly doodles! It can be traditional or digital, just a quick doodle you did you wanna show off!

u/ravio_1300 — 16 days ago

So I feel like my art style is pretty distinctive and unique to me. However I can definitely pinpoint a few pieces of media I have used as inspiration as I've developed my art style over time. I'd be super curious to see if anyone can tell what media specifically inspired my art :D

What my main project is (and what these characters are from) is a post-apocalyptic comic focusing on the found family relationship between Maryn and Rowan (these two idiots). The world is rotting away around them, but they're gonna have sweet slice of life adventures and not think about the horrors.

Guess what you think inspired my art style (and if you want, this project as a whole) and I'll tell you if that assumption is correct.

u/ravio_1300 — 16 days ago

These are the main characters for a comic I'm working on. Maryn (the black haired one) is intended to be around 18 and Rowan (the little blonde one) is meant to be about 14. I've been doing my best to make them look their proper ages, specifically I want them to be the most awkward teenagers imaginable, am I successful? How old do they look? If they don't look their proper ages, how can I improve their designs?

Hi all! I'm putting out an ask to see if anyone has a DND group in the Olympia, WA area that is looking for a player? If so, I'm looking for a new group to join!! I'm currently in one campaign that only plays twice a month, so I'd really like to find another game to add to my schedule! I have been searching in a few other locations, but I figured I'd give here a shot as well.

I'm 22 years old, female, and I'm a current college senior with a bit too much time on my hands. I've been playing DND for about half a year, but I've been interested in it for about 2 years. I've listened to a few DND podcasts and I play a lot of BG3, so I'm not new to DND by any means. I've only played 5th edition and that's my preference (although I could be persuaded to give 5.5 a try).

I like more roleplay and story heavy campaigns, and I really appreciate it when the DM can weave my character's story into the campaign. I'm an artist and a writer, and I'm also heavily over-prepared for everything, so from me you can expect a very detailed and well developed character and me to get fully into roleplaying my character. I have a few characters in mind (I have an druid and a paladin I've been wanting to play for a while now). I'm free basically any evening except for Saturdays and Tuesdays. I would prefer to join a campaign that is new-ish, either just starting or only a few sessions in. I'm also looking for a group I can potentially be friends with outside of DND, so I'd really like it if people were around my age (like in their 20s), but that isn't a requirement. Smaller groups are more my vibe, I think a max of 4 (maybe 5) players is ideal for me as a player. I would prefer to play in-person rather than online, I don't like playing online nearly as much!

If you're looking for a player, please feel free to reach out! And if you know a group looking for a player, please pass on my info.

A bunch of screenshots of my current Tav, Miss Zoya! She's a frost sorceress (mods gave me a great ice-themed sorcerer subclass) and is very confused on what's happening around her, but she's along for the ride. I imagine she's got the thickest slavic accent known to man, is hopelessly in love with Karlach (fire and ice!), and is an absolute sweetheart, even if she is a bit airheaded.

u/ravio_1300 — 17 days ago

Since we last saw her, Zoya beat up the goblin camp and has made her way through the underdark. She's still hopelessly in love with Karlach, but the feeling is mutual at least. She's just very pretty and I wanted to show off more screenshots of her :D
