It's for a play so doesn't need to be terribly neat. Pattern calls for "padding" but is this just interfacing? I don't have any canvas so was thinking of using starched cotton calico (I'm in the UK - think calico means something else in the US - it's a fairly rough woven cloth used for making prototypes and aprons).

Planning on machine sewing, I'm afraid. Will be using some curtains for the fashion fabric and cotton bedsheets for the lining.

I've made waistcoats and shirts before but this is a bit different.
