I think most people worship external beings because they are lost within themselves. So their way to find grace is thru outside spiritual authorities.

When you understand that you are your own authority, sovereign and aware of your responsibilities, the tables shift.

You realize that jesus was no different than you, he just unlocked the atman within himself. And you can do the exact same because this energy is universal.

So once you reach a certain level of spiritual maturity you can be independent of any Faith or belief because you have access to levels that cannot be attained by simple mortals.
