Nearly $1 Trillion Cut From Healthcare: June 1-7 We Organize Nationwide
Politicians are pushing nearly $1 trillion in healthcare cuts while continuing massive giveaways to corporations and the wealthy. Millions of people could lose access to care, rural hospitals could close, and communities already struggling are being told their health and survival are expendable.
From June 1–7, organizations and communities across the country are mobilizing in response through 7 Days in June (7DIJ) — a coordinated national week of action focused on healthcare, dignity, public health, and collective survival.
What is 7DIJ?
7DIJ is a coalition-supported week of action bringing together labor unions, healthcare advocates, HIV/AIDS organizations, public health leaders, faith groups, community organizations, and grassroots organizers.
Partner organizations include:
• UNITE HERE
• AFL-CIO
• SEIU
• AFT
• National Nurses United
• Families USA
• Public Citizen
• Coalition on Human Needs
• American Public Health Association (APHA)
• Defend Public Health
• NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice
• SAGE
• AIDS United
• Pride At Work
• Save HIV Funding
• Vivent Health
• and many others.
Endorsers include ACT UP chapters, labor councils, healthcare coalitions, HIV/AIDS advocacy groups, Indivisible chapters, healthcare-for-all campaigns, and community organizations across the country.
Why now?
Healthcare systems are already strained in many regions. Rural hospitals continue to face closure threats, disabled and chronically ill people face growing instability, and healthcare workers are being asked to do more with less while policymakers debate further cuts.
These policies do not affect people equally.
Working-class communities, seniors, disabled people, LGBTQ+ communities, immigrants, people living with HIV/AIDS, and families already struggling with costs are often hit first and hardest when healthcare infrastructure is reduced.
▎ Healthcare is infrastructure.
▎ Care is not a luxury.
7DIJ is not centered around one single organization or political figure. It is a decentralized week of organizing intended to create visible public pressure and connect communities already doing this work locally.
Actions happening during the week include:
• town halls
• marches
• vigils
• banner drops
• teach-ins
• healthcare worker testimony
• mutual aid events
• labor solidarity actions
• direct engagement with elected officials
On June 5, many communities will also participate in a national candlelight vigil honoring people already lost due to healthcare inequities and those now at risk from additional cuts.
What happens next?
Local organizers, unions, advocacy groups, and community members are continuing to coordinate events in cities and states across the country. Some actions are focused on healthcare policy directly, while others connect healthcare access to broader issues like labor rights, housing, disability justice, HIV/AIDS services, and public health funding.
