[Discussion] I have no clue what audience my art is for

I desperately want to do commissions, to get my foot in the door of dealing with clients and meeting deadlines. Plus get moolah to do what I love. But I feel that with the art I make, I'm not sure what audience naturally gravitates towards it, or even if I want to cater to any one group.

My ultimate goal is to either be a solo comic artist, possibly crowdfund a story so I don't have to deal with a publisher or anyone's outside control, or work as a penciller/inker in the comics industry. I've noticed I'm ok at penciling, pretty good at inking, and abYSMAL in color (mainly because the result is ok but I have no clue how it gets there sometimes and it bothers me), so I wanted to do away with the last one as an option.

So I thought of just offering pencils and ink commissions for clients. Well, it seems the market skews towards full color being a decent option at a decent price. I almost see no one offering pencils at a decent rate. So I've tried adding color to my recent work and it's going ok.

Yet I still have no clue what to market my work as. Other areas of art that I don't even want to get into (furry + NSFW for ex) are so clear in their niche; within that umbrella you can make anything under the sun. But for the stuff I want to make which are mainly character illustrations, there's too much variance in subject matter to me. I want to draw characters from cartoons, anime, comics, manga, games, etc, but that's not going to really let people know exactly what I'm about if that makes sense.

There are artists who just draw Dragon Ball, or manga style, or mainstream comics, and their paths are clear to me and they seem comfortable within them. I couldn't even wrap around what makes my work my own other than I drew it and I have somewhat of a distinct style.

The main things I want feedback on are if anyone notices a niche I fall into, maybe there's something I'm not thinking of that I can't put the words to. Also what I should value my art at too because I have no clue where to start with pricing. I graduated from art school so I really need to get on paying these loans off haha.

Any help would be appreciated :)

[OC] Happy Belated Goku/Gohan Day!

Wanted to do some tributes for my fav character + his pops in my style! I was completely blindsided by Gohan's Day so his is a tad rushed. As for Goku.. they were made about a week or two ago, I just forgor until last minute to post 'em 😬

ANYWAYS, happy to make some DB any day. How everyone likes these!

Movink Pad Pro 14 vs iPad vs Alternatives?

My long used iPad has finally crapped the bed after buying it refurbished in 2021. I've used it for everything from drawing comics, to reading comics, books, tv, movies, etc. 95% from making and reading comics though. It was a 2018 iPad Pro 1TB. I bought it refurbished off eBay for around the same price as the Movink 14 today.

So, I'm left with some options:

Either I get another used iPad, I keep all my apps like Procreate and Panels and my accessories. But don't "upgrade" anything (mainly the Procreate layers limit but it didn't affect CSP). Stuck with iOS for however long (I truly hate Apple and iPad but I kept it bcs drawing apps + better stylus and accessories than Samsung). But better long-term support.

I get a purely dedicated device for media (comics + shows) and save up for the Wacom or another alternative to come it into the mix later.

Or I get the Movink Pad Pro 14 for everything. It'll be great for drawing but not on the same level as iPad for everything else. Plus I think it has an SD card slot so I can put all my comics on there. But it also has some quirks with the software, namely I keep seeing no one knowing how long till be supported which is a yikes from me. Also no good accessories it seems (no case + no case with stand is the main thing).

I had a Samsung Tab S7 back in high school, and it was so unreloable I just gave up. I needed to get another stylus after the one it came with broke on me, I was too broke for CSP, not to mention it'd run bad on it, the screen real estate was much less compared to iPad, the latency felt off, etc etc. I don't know if this is every Amdroid tablet experience with a pen or just the age of the sevice, maybe they're way better now.

The iPad has required a lot of accessories to get it running, namely a matte screen protector and Apple pencil tips. In fact just a month ago I bought replacements for those when they ran their course after a year of use. So now I'm left with multiple accessories I'll never use again if I don't get an iPad. Which sucks because I specifically didn't want an Apple device because they trap you in this walled garden, and I may very well be stuck but this is my only device from them so right now might be the chance to break out.

I could also get the 11 just for doing sketches and media instead, and be more disciplined about finishing my work at home, but then I might as well just get a sketchbook.

I want to prioritize the drawing experience over everything, while not sacrificing too much elsewhere. But I also need accessories like at least a case for the Movink.

What should I go for, should I stick with iPad or invest into the Movink 14?

TL;DR: I ask for no lid at the drive thru + keep it chunky so the cookie dough and reese's aren't ruined + little more Blizzard, is this common?

I order at my usual DQ, the same every time, a Cookie Dough Blizzard, XT Cookie Dough, + Reese's.

Half the time they'd flip it and hand it to me. Otherwise times they'd put a lid on it. I eventually saw that they put way less in it if they put the lid on. Maybe this is crazy but I feel like there's a lot more when they put no lid on it, might be placebo but whatever.

I spoke to a manager one time and they said my order is very chunky?? So that's why if they used a lid they'd go up an extra size, to accommodate the space, or put a sundae lid on. But its always a very creamy drink and both the cookie dough and reese's are prominent.

Anyways, I eventually started asking for "no lid" at the drive thru, since I get to my place fast enough to not have anything melt and I love the extra stuff. Now they don't put a lid on and get it right every time.

I went to another DQ closer to my GFs home and did the exact same order, and it was mixed WAY different (the cookie dough instead of big chunks is whittled to bit, I barely taste any reese's) and I was displeased. But I drove off because I'm not sure if this is a common practice that I do, or if I should explain it better so my orders right at the line. Anyone have any advice? In particular any employees that could let me know how it works inside.

I'm conflicted right now and I don't know what exactly I'm asking tbh.

After months of struggling to draw anything and feel good about it, I've reached an epiphany where I just ask myself, "What if Toriyama drew this?" And it just immediately motivates me to get it done. I go from not drawing for weeks to drawing both these Goku drawings start to finish in one night. The WW character sheet in one sitting. The Cloud drawing in half an hour.

But I'm having issues: 1) I like his style but I don't want to be stuck just drawing it. I used to be known in school as just being able to draw DB characters which is cool, but I want to improve and have improved and don't want to move backwards out of marking my own style. 2) This style won't work in American comics publishing which is where I want to at least have the option of ending up in. The stark contrast with no hatching is clear to read on the page but they hire artists who implore more detail. Maybe it's changed, I know Samnee is very clean but he's a legend. Plus I feel it'll interfere with the colorists job.

Idk, maybe I'm overreacting but idk what to think. Should I just draw more and keep seeing where things go? Has anyone else been in the same position? How did you evolve past it??
