AITA for exposing my brother at my parents’ anniversary dinner and ruining everything?
I (16M) have an older brother (22M) who my family treats like some perfect, untouchable golden child. Straight A’s, “respectful,” all that fake polished crap. Meanwhile I exist and somehow that’s already disappointing.
Thing is, he’s full of shit. For years. Biggest one: he faked a scholarship. Like fully photoshopped an acceptance letter and let my parents brag about it for TWO YEARS. I found out when I was fixing his laptop and saw the emails. I confronted him back then and he told me to mind my own business and not “ruin things.” So yeah, I stayed quiet like an idiot.
Fast forward to last week. My parents’ 25th anniversary dinner. Big fancy setup, whole family there pretending we’re normal. My brother gives this long, fake emotional speech about honesty and family values. I’m sitting there thinking this is the most bullshit thing I’ve ever heard.
Something in me just snapped.
After his speech, everyone’s clapping, and I just go, “You wanna talk about honesty? Tell them about your fake scholarship.”
Everything goes dead silent. He laughs it off at first, but I keep going. I bring up the emails, the photoshopped letter, everything. I even had screenshots.
Yeah. That killed the entire night.
My mom looked like she was gonna cry, my dad was furious, and my brother lost it, telling me to shut the fuck up in front of everyone. Dinner basically collapsed after that. People left early, whole vibe ruined.
Now my family’s mad at me for “publicly humiliating him” and “choosing the worst possible time.” He says I’ve permanently screwed up his life. But I tried handling it privately before and got ignored.
So yeah, timing was awful. But was I supposed to just sit there while he lied to everyone’s faces and acted like some saint?
AITA?
