It felt like we never really had close ups of the Jackson Brothers actors faces, let alone enough dialogue to show their relationship with Michael. The only scene in my recollection was the Twister scene, the moment when he's a little older and gets famous already when Joe tries to pretend "thats my son" and intro to bubbles... and it really made the brothers seem like they thought Michael was a weirdo and they didn't want to be with him. I was hoping for some moments where they would speak to one another and try to help support Michael or another brother behind scenes... especially while or before performing on stage. I wanted to see humanity their good and bad side growing up. I wanted to see which brother he was closer to and felt comfy with most - which brother didn't fare so well with him, you know?
Like I wanted to see what got them to sing these songs other than the practice sessions at home with dad. What inspired them? Who wrote the songs, who made the choreo? How'd they figure out who sings which and why did they choose Michael as lead singer? Would've been funny if they're all trying to do lead at some point and they're like "yes it should be him!"...
heck, I wanted to see the first moment of Michael singing ... ever. Even if it were bad singing. Like how did he even get really good at that age? We need to expand from that. Who gave him the vocal training? A belt to the behind doesn't automatically make you a better singer but it seems like the movie suggested that.
They needed to show his exposure to his brothers singing and him trying to copy them for his first moments of singing. But instead, we started with him already singing super well like he came out of the womb singing like THAT. Give us 4 or 5 year old michael trying to sing.
Maybe I just need to see it again. From my memory watching it day 1, it seemed like all I really saw and remember best were:
- Joseph
- Michael
- Bill Bray
- Katherine
- Bubbles
I was hoping they would expand from the first intro of Quincy Jones in the studio with Michael when Joseph pushes Young Michael to leave. Quincy was like "if you need anyone to talk to........" then it never happened. It really seemed like he knew what was up between them two with his body language- but never really got to do anything about it! I was like "yes!!! We're getting somewhere Gooood" then it never happened!
I was hoping Michael would come back to Quincy to talk to him about his personal issues and even SHOW HIM how to use all the buttons in the studio. It felt like that switched over to Bill Bray's role and didn't really make Quincy feel like a big deal... then Branca came over the spotlight and felt like we never really got to see much of Quincy say anything anymore. And to get back to the "studio" stuff with the computer and buttons stuff - it felt like it was suggested he learned it eventually because he was suddenly working on it as he got older. But we didn't really see anything. It's like "how to draw a bird: step 1: draw a circle, step 2: bird."
And the gang member scene... i literally didn't know they were actual gangs until I looked it up AFTER the movie.
And it even felt like the scale of fans screaming at him and going crazy wasn't really big as it is supposed to be. It felt kinda quiet or lonely to me somewhat. Michael was HUGE, he couldn't really go anywhere! Then suddenly he was able to go to the top of the hill LA walking trail with Bill Bray with NO ONE AROUND trying to get his attention?! How was that even possible!? He'd be playing with the camera people and goofing around. I wish we saw that too.
And most importantly... I feel like we reaaally needed to establish why Joeseph Jackson was acting the way he did. We really needed to see what he did before he got them kids! That would really make sense why he was the way he was!
It just won't make sense if they jump back in time to piece in missed moments. It would be like recreating part 1 again for part 2 to fill in the blanks.
Only way is moving forward from here and continuing where they left off the first one. All missed scenes and historical moments gone forever if they haven't been shown yet.
Second should have the same style of presentation as the first for continuity sakes. This means everything filmed up to Bad we didn't see in theaters is forever cut forever unless someone leaks the uncut version online illegally OR they give us an extended version of film 1. No other option.
There are so many people who don't know the missing parts of his story so it wouldn't make sense if something pops up in part 2 about this moment in the past and wasn't already shown. For example, "Hey remember that time you were on The Wiz?" And they are in a year 2000 scene talking about that. The audience, as a new person introduced to michael, they'd be like, "what the heck is a wiz?"
It only makes sense while we wait for the next part to be filmed for them to release the film again next year as an extended edition while everyone has Michael fever again. Strike it while it's hot. Give us rerelease of Michael-starring games. Cameos, Just Dance Michael Jackson game edition. That will help fund the next one tremendously.
