Wheels, tyres and brass.

First mods to my defender have landed.

Some OGRC beadlocks with brass rings plus 57mm injora maverix and green silicone inserts. I fitted these first and I have to say what a difference just this mod made. Absolutely night a day grip from the tyres compared to stock. I'm new to proper crawling mods so I'm pretty blown away by them to be honest.

Full brass bits for the axles from Ali, £20 for the lots vs ~£60 for injora so quite pleased, went together absolutely fine but I feel some steering angle has been lost. I think a few minutes with a file will fix that though.

Bearings throughout and a trailer finishes off the first evolution and I have to say I'm really pleased with the jump in performance.

I have plans to use this as a scale tow rig with the trailer for a more competitive build but I'm blown away with how much more capable this thing is. A new motor, driveshafts, servo and some lower gearing and that'll be it for this one I think until I get the next rig built. No point having a trailer and nothing to put on it....

Redcat apex 18 or Furitek terra comp?

I recently got TRX4M after being without a crawler for a few years.

Really enjoying it and going to keep it as a scale-ish rig with plans to modify it for towing a trailer loaded with a comp style rig.

Looking at what's available in 18th scale it seems the redcat apex is the most capable comp style RTR available and a great place to start a pure performance build.

I've also seen the furitek terra comp which seems to be a more focused comp rig out of the box(conversations with various LLM trying to understand basic differences but I have been frustrated with their responses) and is about £50 more expensive for me in the UK...

Running videos show the apex out performing the terra comp which is counter intuitive to the price and my basic understanding of things.

Is the apex just more capable out of the box?

Is it a case of a few tweaks to the terra comp and it'll out perform the apex?

What am I missing here?

What would be your pick for a base for an all out performance build, I don't plan to compete I just want something super capable. Happy to mod and tune but it's nice to start with the best base.
