Gen Z's AI backlash is getting louder

Gen Z's AI backlash is getting louder

This graduation season, AI has become an unwelcome topic at commencement ceremonies across the US. At the University of Arizona, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was met with widespread boos from nearly 10k graduates as he spoke about the rise of AI. Similar reactions played out at the University of Central Florida and Middle Tennessee State University.

The reason is very simple: unemployment among college graduates aged 22 to 27 has hit its highest level in twelve years. About 70% of college students see AI as a threat to their job prospects.

When you're already struggling to find work, being told to embrace the technology that might be taking those opportunities away. Who would be satisfied?

Pizza Hut's AI system caused 'cascading' problems and $100M in damages, franchisee alleges in new suit

A Pizza Hut franchisee has sued Pizza Hut, alleging its mandatory AI delivery management system Dragontail caused "cascading operational breakdowns" resulting in over $100 million in damages.

The core issue: Dragontail gave DoorDash drivers real-time visibility into kitchen operations, letting them see exactly when orders would be ready.

Drivers started waiting to batch multiple orders together before heading out, leaving pizzas sitting in stores for much longer than before. Delivery times jumped from under 30 minutes to over 45 minutes, and customer satisfaction took a significant hit.

YouTube is expanding its AI deepfake detection tool to all adult users

YouTube is expanding its AI likeness detection program to all users over the age of 18.

Users submit a one-time facial scan through YouTube Studio, and the system will continuously monitor the platform for videos that use their likeness without permission. Upon detecting a match, it will notify the user to request their removal.

Coca-Cola Denies Cloning Johnny Cash's Voice in Ad

Johnny Cash's estate has sued Coca-Cola, alleging the company used AI to clone Cash's voice in an advertisement. Coca-Cola acknowledged using "male vocals" in the ad but denied that they were an imitation of Johnny Cash's voice.

Legal experts believe this case could become a landmark ruling in the AI voice cloning space:

It tests existing right of publicity laws against AI technology

Sets potential compensation standards for voice cloning cases

May force clearer disclosure requirements for synthetic media

Several major labels have quietly updated their artist contracts to include explicit AI voice clauses since the lawsuit emerged.

More than a third of Apple Music uploads are now AI music

Apple Music VP Oliver Schusser revealed in a Billboard podcast interview that more than a third of the platform's monthly intake is music that's "100% AI."

Despite that, only 0.5% of all users are actually engaging with AI-generated content. Almost exactly the same pattern Deezer reported. Massive upload volume, near-zero organic listenership.

Schusser also confirmed for the first time that Apple Music has developed its own AI detection technology, though he noted they're still in the early stages of addressing it.

He also called for the music industry to reach a consensus about “what is AI, what’s not AI”, adding that this discussion “can’t just be corporates: you need to have artists and songwriters in the room as well”.

What actually counts as AI music?

I recently read an article stating that many behind musicians have actually been using AI for a while. For instance, they use it to generate funk samples, isolate vocals, or transform lyrics and chord progressions into complete demos to pitch to artists and labels.

It got me thinking: what actually counts as AI music?

Is it simply if AI was used during the creative process? Or does it only count if typed in a prompt and hit generate?

The Recording Academy sent 200+ members to Capitol Hill April 21-23 for Grammys on the Hill 2026, around three coordinated AI bills: NO FAKES, TRAIN, and CLEAR Acts.

NO FAKES Act — federal property right over voice and likeness; stops AI cloning without consent.

TRAIN Act — gives creators an administrative subpoena process to discover what copyrighted works were used to train AI models.

CLEAR Act — requires AI companies to notify the US Copyright Office of all copyrighted material used in training.

The SIQA AI Music Charts published its Q1 2026 AI Music Intelligence Report. Out of 1,551 verified commercial AI music submissions from 828 artists across 57 countries, Suno powered 90.4% of them. Udio came in below 1%.

Udio’s sub-1% is explained by its walled-garden strategy. The platform banned downloads after signing major-label deals, which blocks the commercial release pipeline entirely.

It means Udio has basically opted out of the commercial market for now.

At the same time, the report also pointed out that only 19% of submitters described their tracks as fully AI-generated. 48% said AI-assisted, 33% said Human + AI hybrid. SIQA’s own summary: “The human is still in the room.”
