Do men (gay) not like when you leave the option of dating up to them?

Is this some kind of secret rule I am unaware of? I’ve noticed a pattern in myself of were I’m talking/getting to know a guy. After some time goes by I ask what the vibes are, such as do you want a fwb, or do you want more. Basically just asking what he wants out of whatever we have. I usually make it known in the least rudest way possible that I am unaffected either way by their choice, I just want to know what category to place them in. Funny enough, everytime I am met with a vague answer, (I never thought about it) and the crazy part is the guy usually starts acting funny towards me? As if they are mad I’m okay with us being nothing? Someone help me out!
