Confused about whether spotting counts as period or not

Salaam girls,

This might be a bit awkward to talk about but I feel like a lot of us silently deal with this.

I’ve always found period tracking kind of stressful because for us it’s not just “my period started” and “my period ended.” It affects salah, fasting, ghusl, wudu, everything.

The part that confuses me the most is spotting.

Like you think you’re done, you’re ready to pray again, then you see a tiny bit of brown/pink discharge and suddenly you’re confused all over again. Do I pray? Do I wait? Do I need ghusl again? Is this still hayd or something else?

I used to keep notes in my phone and then search random answers online, but it just made me more confused because every situation has different conditions.

Recently I found an app called Muslimah Pro and it’s actually made for Muslim women, not just a normal period tracker. You can log bleeding and purity days, and it helps with reminders like when ghusl may be needed. I like that it at least understands that cycle tracking for Muslim women is connected to worship too.

Obviously for serious/complicated cases I’d still ask someone knowledgeable, but for everyday tracking it’s been helpful to have everything in one place instead of trying to remember dates and guess.

Do you girls track spotting somewhere or just go based on memory? I feel like this is one of those things nobody teaches properly and then we’re all just confused every month 😭

Assalamu alaikum sisters,

I wanted to ask/share something because I feel like this is one of those things a lot of us deal with but don’t really talk about openly.

For me, tracking my period has never just been about knowing when it starts or ends. As a Muslim woman, it also affects prayer, fasting, ghusl, wudu, and that whole confusion around whether something is still period bleeding or just spotting/istihada.

The hardest part is when it’s not clear.

Like when your bleeding stops, then you see spotting again. Or when your period is longer than usual. Or when you think you’re clean, but then there’s discharge or a tiny stain and suddenly you’re wondering:

“Can I pray now?”
“Do I need to make ghusl?”
“Is this still hayd?”
“Do I just make wudu?”
“Am I overthinking this?”

I used to just keep Googling the same questions again and again, but every answer felt like “it depends,” which is true, but also not very helpful when you’re trying to decide before salah time.

I recently started using an app called Muslimah Pro, and what I liked is that it feels like a period tracker made with Muslim women in mind, not just a normal cycle app with pink branding. You can track bleeding/purity, and it gives reminders around things like when ghusl may be needed and helps make sense of cycle-related worship questions.

Of course, I don’t think any app should replace asking a scholar for complicated situations, but for day-to-day tracking, it honestly makes me feel less anxious because everything is in one place.

I still think this is an area where Muslim women need better tools. Most mainstream period apps don’t understand that our cycle affects worship too, not just fertility or mood.

Has anyone else struggled with this, especially spotting or irregular bleeding? How do you usually track it and know when to pray again?
