Arsenal and Atlético meet at the Emirates on Tuesday for a place in the Champions League final. The first leg ended 1-1, both goals from penalties. Neither side scored from open play, though Atlético dominated the second half (xG 2.22 to 1.50, 18 shots to 11).

This is the first time this season Atlético face an away second leg without a lead. Against Brugge they drew 3-3 away then won 4-1 at home. Against Tottenham they took a 5-2 lead to London. Against Barcelona they won 2-0 away in the first leg. At 1-1, this is new territory.

Arsenal are unbeaten in this season's Champions League. 13 matches, 10 wins, 3 draws. Five wins and a draw at the Emirates. But there are fitness concerns. Odegaard was left out of the Fulham squad with a knee problem. Havertz has not played since before the first leg. Saka started against Fulham but came off at half-time as a precaution. Timber and Merino remain out.

Atletico rested every first-leg starter for the Valencia match on Friday and won 2-0 with two debut goals from academy graduates. Alvarez is expected fit despite an ankle knock. Sorloth should return to the squad after missing the first leg. Barrios, Gimenez and Nico Gonzalez are out.

The midfield battle between Cardoso-Koke and Rice-Zubimendi will define the match. In the first leg Atletico held their own in possession (52-48) and were not pinned back through the middle. If they replicate that, the counter-attacking route opens up.

For Griezmann, this could be his final Champions League match. His move to Orlando City is confirmed for this summer. He was UEFA's Player of the Match in the first leg. Ten years after the 2016 final, one more match decides whether he gets another shot at it.

Winners face PSG or Bayern Munich (PSG lead 5-4, second leg May 6 at the Allianz Arena) in the final on May 30 in Budapest.

La Liga's financial control system (LCPD) works differently from UEFA's FFP and is arguably stricter. Each club gets a salary cap based on projected revenue, and exceeding it blocks player registrations immediately. No grace period, no payment plan.

The current ceilings tell the story. Real Madrid's sits around €761 million, Barcelona's around €351 million, Atletico's around €336 million. The gap between Madrid and everyone else is enormous. Barcelona's figure has fluctuated dramatically over the past few seasons as they work through their financial restructuring.

On top of this, UEFA's 2022 overhaul introduced a squad-cost rule that caps wages, amortisation and agent fees at 70% of revenue from 2025-26 onwards. In July 2025, 12 clubs were sanctioned. Chelsea paid €31 million in fines, Barcelona €15 million.

One case worth watching is Atletico after Apollo Sports Capital's acquisition of roughly 55% of the club in March 2026. The investment does not bypass either system. Apollo's capital cannot lift the 70% squad-cost ceiling because that is calculated on revenue, not owner equity. What it can do is fund revenue-generating infrastructure, which over time raises the permissible spending limits under both UEFA and La Liga rules.

The system rewards clubs that grow organically and punishes those that try to outspend their income. Whether the current thresholds are fair across clubs of different sizes is a separate debate, but the mechanics are clear.

Atlético and Arsenal drew 1-1 at the Metropolitano in the Champions League semi-final first leg. The numbers favoured the home side. xG 2.22 to 1.50, 18 shots to 11, 52% possession, three big chances to two.

Arsenal took the lead through a Gyokeres penalty on 44 minutes after Hancko fouled him in the box following a turnover in Atletico's own half. Alvarez equalised from the spot on 56 after Llorente's shot hit Ben White's arm.

The second half belonged to Atletico. Simeone brought on Le Normand at half-time and the defensive shape tightened. Pubill pushed forward from right-back, Griezmann hit the crossbar just past the hour, Lookman had a clear chance at 74 saved by Raya, and Molina fired a long-range effort in stoppage time. The second goal never came.

Two penalty incidents dominated the refereeing narrative. Atletico's equaliser from a handball, and a reversed call in the 78th when Eze went down under Hancko's challenge. Makkelie initially pointed to the spot before overturning it after the on-field review. Arteta called it "completely unacceptable." Simeone questioned whether Hancko's first-half foul warranted a penalty in a semi-final.

Alvarez scored his 25th Champions League goal in his 41st appearance, the fastest Argentine to that milestone (Messi reached 25 in 42). But he was withdrawn at 77 minutes with a leg issue and is awaiting tests. His availability for the second leg is the biggest question heading into next week.

Koke and Cardoso matched Arsenal's midfield of Rice, Zubimendi and Odegaard. Ruggeri kept Madueke and Saka contained on his flank. Arsenal's defensive resilience, led by Gabriel, held firm under sustained pressure but they created little going forward after the break.

Arsenal remain unbeaten in this season's Champions League (13 games, 10 wins, 3 draws). Atletico are expected to rotate heavily for Valencia this weekend to keep key players fresh for the second leg at the Emirates. A genuine contest awaits in London.

Atlético finally broke their league losing run on Saturday, beating Athletic Club 3-2 at the Metropolitano. First La Liga win since March 14. The context matters though. Champions League semi-final against Arsenal is on Wednesday.

Simeone named a strong eleven. Alvarez was the only regular left on the bench. The first half was poor. One shot, down 1-0 from another set-piece header (Paredes, 23'). Then Simeone's halftime message changed the energy. Baena told DAZN that Simeone said to enjoy it and go win, that they had nothing to lose. The losing run's pressure just lifted.

Two goals in ten minutes after the break. Griezmann equalised at 49 from Baena's cross. Sorloth made it 2-1 at 54 after a break triggered by Barrios winning the ball in midfield. Sorloth added a third at 90+3 from Molina's through ball. Athletic pulled one back at 90+7 through Guruzeta.

Sorloth was the standout. Two goals, 11/16 duels, 8/10 aerials, FotMob 9.1. He grabbed his left knee after the third goal though. With Arsenal next, that needs monitoring.

The difficult news is Barrios. He started for the first time since February, was involved in both goals, then went down at 58 minutes holding his left thigh. Third muscular injury in three months. Right thigh in February, right thigh again in March after returning vs Tottenham, now the left. Club says muscular discomfort, awaiting tests.

Baena's performance was arguably the most significant takeaway for Arsenal. He said he enjoyed playing again for the first time in months. If he carries that form into Wednesday, Atletico's midfield options look different.

xG: 2.09 - 0.80 (FotMob). Big chances 6-3. First league win in six weeks heading into the biggest match of the season.
