Thoreau opens Civil Disobedience with the maxim "That government is best which governs least," and he speaks in favor of government that does not intrude upon men's lives. Government is only an expedient. I resonated with this as a Kenyan because our current government keeps intervening in our daily lives, especially when it comes to business and policies. People tend to find it easier to run a business informally because of the fees that you will be bombarded with when you don't. You don't get bombarded with fees, and frankly speaking, our environment makes it hard for that; it's hard to get loans, hard to build credit, and everything is difficult. The sad inevitable truth is that scaling informally is almost impossible, and making that jump from informal to formal is also risky if only the government tried to create a balance rather than making policies that hurt anyone who is not made of money.
