Where Spring Meets Winter: A quiet valley in Erzurum, Türkiye [OM-D E-M1 Mark III + M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4 PRO]

There’s something incredibly peaceful about the transition of seasons here. I was out exploring the countryside when I spotted this scene just off the road.
Down in the valley, the fields are already painted a vibrant, rich green, but the imposing peaks behind them are still holding tightly to winter. I was immediately drawn to this lone house with its striking red roof, nestled perfectly in front of a dense wall of tall, bare poplars. It looked like a hidden sanctuary caught right between two seasons.

In Şanlıurfa and similar regions, old stone mansions often include small carved niches like this, either intentionally designed for birds or later adopted by them.

These are sometimes called “bird houses” in traditional architecture. In Ottoman and local stone design, they reflect both aesthetics and a sense of compassion toward animals. People believed hosting birds brought a sense of harmony and even good fortune.

* The niche protects them from heat and wind

* Its height keeps them safe from predators

* The stone helps keep the space cool in hot weather

The sooty orange tip (Zegris eupheme) is a Palearctic Pieridae butterfly that has a range that extends through southern Europe, southwest Europe, northern Africa, East Kazakhstan and Asia Minor. Global warming currently seems to be extending its range to the north. The habitat consists of open flowery grasslands amongst hills.
