Scale Rally Build on TT-02 Type S – Final Setup

Finalized the build with a more scale-oriented setup since realistic fitment and stance are really important to me.

Currently running around -0.5° rear camber and 1° front camber. Rear toe-in measured manually is approximately 1.3° total, which is very close to what you’d see on a real rally car setup. For reference, this came from a measurement of 184 mm front vs 185.5 mm rear on 65 mm tires, giving a mild, stable alignment that feels very scale in both look and behavior.

I originally started with a fully modified Tamiya TT-02 built for tarmac rally. It ran really well, but I wanted to go more extreme with a proper rally direction, so I decided to rebuild into a more solid rally-focused setup using the Type S platform. I eventually sold my previous TT-02 setup and kept the Type-S chassis as the base for the new build.

At first, I struggled a lot with fitment since I was running 6mm hex hubs with +2 offset Tamiya rims, which caused rubbing issues. I later switched to 4mm hex, but still had rubbing, so I ended up machining (lathe) the old rims to properly clear everything.

The excessive toe from the toe blocks was also corrected using an adjustable suspension mount, which helped dial in the alignment properly and made the handling much more consistent.

Sharing some photos of the fitment, chassis setup, and the wheels being machined on the lathe.

TT02 Type S offset and fitment

With the longer arms, my wheels are now extended. Curious what you guys run for rims and hex.

Currently I have 4mm hexes but had to use spacers since the hex hub of the rim is 5mm deep. Resurfacing the rim hex hub with a lathe today hope the fitment improves.

Any tips highly appreciated!

TT02 Type S rally

I went to a local hobby shop to get new set of Type S suspension mounts mainly so I can extra washers, hinge pins, and the toe block.

Now the Type S rebuilt again, shimmed with the extra washers I got from the upper camber link mount. It’s technically slop free.

3 degrees toe seemed to aggressive but I can easily switch back so no worries. Didn’t really like the orange spacers I got with the Type S kit so yea, I’m happy I was able to color match everything

Disclaimer tho, for the shocks it’ll be black bronze from YR but I think that’s alright. If I would color match even the shocks, Tamiya Buggy Aeration front shocks will be the solution, it’s just that it’s too pricey.

Anyway, my feedback is the droop definitely improved, parts are sturdier, better geometry for rally.

For me, the Type S is definitely easier to setup too compared to the standard TT02 and highly recommend to people wanting to do a rally conversion on thIs chassis.

The stock arms doesn’t really give much for droop in my case.

My TT02 is now a Type S with higher ground clearance than usual

I finally decided to do the Type S conversion. I ran with some friends on their Type S and XV chassis. Safe to say, the convenience of adjustments in the Type S got me thinking that I could do this instead of selling the TT02.

What made me decide in doing the Type S is because I already spent so much time on this chassis that I didn’t want to let it go.

Tamiya bearings replaced with sealed ones.

Front arms are now modified and installed. Not perfect since I trimmed the front arms manually but it looks fine. Hopefully my OCD won’t act up. And if ever it does, I have a new set of reinforced arms with me here. While these actually are in storage, I might as well find a solution on how to trim the arms perfectly.

Waiting for my camber link mounts, shocks, and shock towers. Hopefully within the week, I’m going rallying this weekend!

Reinforced open adjusters are here too but the links won’t be here until month end.

If anyone’s curious the orange spacers are YR.

Mini JRX2

Sharing my complete build for the Mini JRX2! Built mine with a JDM heart with BHM decals and Tamiya wheels.

Now with Dumbo P6FG (receiver with gyro), HW Quicrun 2435 4,500kv G3 brushless motor, HW 16BL30 G2, Spektrum SX108 servo, GNB 1,100mah 2s LiHV battery

I was able to mount the electronics where it should be as I’m trying to do close to factory geometry.

Did a short test on my room and I can say it’s definitely too fast from the Tamiya 370 Sport Tuned I used to have.

Currently timing is set to factory, drag brake to 10%, neutral position factory

Will do a run later

A random TT02 chassis in your feed

As per requests on my last post, here are photos of my TT02 chassis:

Currently setup for gravel to rally tarmac with 19mm ground clearance, -1 camber all over. It’s fairly quick too.

So far my TT02 has never failed me. I’ve already done the reinforcements needed for the steering and it’s shimmed too. One thing that I didn’t shim are the upper and lower arms.

The long thin wire installed to the receiver is a magnetic light plug for when I want to turn on the lights via the remote.

I have standard head and park lights, strobe lights, brake lights working

If you got any questions feel free to ask me, I’d be happy to guide you through building your TT02 😁

Bonus:
Another Redditor requested for photos of the second chassis at the back, it’s a Losi. Enjoy!

A random TT02 in your feed

Cheap rally blocks on genuine Tamiya rims are ace! Removed my wheel spacers for the perfect rally offset. It’s a little bit positive with no rubbing. As of the moment, my Hawkeye is a rally car

Waiting for my Type S parts and donor chassis to arrive.

Personally, I think the Hawkeye looks best on road. Might rethink of my decision after I receive the Type S

Chassis is fully built with on road rally tarmac setup! I love how both stiff and soft the suspension naturally is.

-1 camber all wheels, .18 front tow out, 0 rear toe

It’s slightly tail happy. Slip angle when cornering is very easy to achieve both on road and gravel

The biggest difference I will have with the Type S conversion is the long travel shocks with soft springs I think it might be a full time rally car.

I recently got a vintage guitar

It’s a Yamaha FG151, sharing some photos of it. Wanna ask if anyone has any info on these

I got it at around $157 USD

Is it a good buy? Condition is impeccable.

Does it originally have a hard case that comes with it? Got mine with one.

What’s the best era correct cappo that I can use for this?

What best strings specification should I use for this?

Thanks!

This car has been a long way from stock.

Springs, oil, grease, wheels, decals

And now, putting in and making the short brushless system’s wires get sorted. Bought some esc - motor wire extension and altered it to fit perfectly. Too long means it won’t fit nicely. I really wanted the esc mounted where it should be and this was the cheapest solution rather than making a custom mount.

Weight balance is ideally close to stock with this setup, I highly recommend this if you want the car as balances as possible without adding weights.

The car has been a bit heavier now. Unfortunately, I didn’t measure the weight difference, I would probably retune the springs after the receiver has arrived.

Electronics setup
HW 16BL30 XT60
HW Quicrun 2435 brushless motor 4,500kv
GNB 1,100mah 2s LiHV (drone battery in XT60 - custom ordered)
Spektrum SX108 servo - (upgrade from the glitchy 107)
Dumbo P6FG receiver - best reco imo, it has gyro built in perfect for this tail happy buggy

Question:
What wheel sets are you running?

What spring and damper setup have you been running on?

Have anyone installed aftermarket o rings/x rings? (Mine doesn’t leak, as of the moment)

I got my brushless setup before, decided to mount it on top of the battery tray. Decided I have to redo it for better front to rear weight ratio.

I purchased cheap 3.5mm extension and altered the length to perfectly fit the setup.

Repositioned the wire for less binding. Now, the spaghetti wires will be addressed when the new receiver with gyro arrived

Hope you like my work!

Finished build for the CC02 Unimog!

It’s a good enough trail truck especially if the drag brakes are on

Quite top heavy but I like it

Got this car without box, with stock esc and stock motor.

Is this the V3 and is it a good sct for the track?

What other mods are essential for this car?

What batteries do you guys use? I’m sticking to 2s tho.

Wheel recommendations?

Aftermarket body recommendations?

The shocks are tuned already. ESC repositioned for a more balanced weight distribution. I installed a Dumbo gyro receiver.

Thinking also of having lights, please recommend!

Finally, my TT02 can run rally compete with Type S rally, and XV02. Sharing some of our photos from earlier.

I’m also doing a Type S conversion with 70mm shocks and buggy springs, can’t wait for parts to arrive!

Painted it black, 1000x better now. I like it. It’s black when clean, it’ll be brown depending on what terrain we run

I didn’t like how it turned out but I still wanna hear your thoughts?

I think I should’ve gotten white. Also the rims have 6 studs which is another reason why I didn’t like it.

Hi! I’m finally upgrading my Losi Mini JRX2 and need some tips on where to mount the esc. Ideally, I want to mount it where the 2in1 used to be.

My motor is still in shipment and after checking my the ESC, I think the cables might be too short.
