is this really a 4k fix?
hey. so we were getting some duct cleaning done as it has never been cleaned and my aunt got this house 10 years ago. the guy doing the cleaning said our boiler is leaking carbon monoxide. ik that gas is odorless but they intentionally add a sulfur like gas to make it smell. immediately upon entry into the room you can smell it. so i don’t think he’s lying about that. i even tried to test with a carbon monoxide alarm i had but it didn’t pick it up and go off.
he said we had no liner and the chimney has to run with a liner for the boiler. then he said “Your boiler and 80% furnace produce exhaust with moisture and acidic gases. Without a properly sized liner, the old chimney slowly starts breaking down from the inside out brick, mortar, even metal parts. Without a proper liner, the moisture and acidic exhaust can slowly damage the chimney from the inside, leading to cracked mortar, loose bricks, rust, poor drafting, carbon monoxide risks, and in some cases exhaust gases leaking back into the home.”
he also said the pipe right above the boiler needs to be straight “its the best way to install this”. and that it’s not supposed to be bent like that.
i attached some pictures for reference. he quoted 4k to install it and fix it. is that right or is he trying to up charge us for something we don’t need? carbon monoxide is no joke so it’s better to be safer than sorry.
EDIT: so i called the gas company like a lot of ppl suggested and sure enough there was a gas leak. the shut off valve inside the house was leaking gas. also the meter outside was leaking gas but all it needed was to be tightened. the gas company staff just changed out the whole meter since it was old and put a newer one in which even looks better than what we had on it before. it was free of charge. as of rn the gas is off but once we get it fixed they’ll turn it back on.
