2 days till ICEMAN, let’s discuss and reflect on ‘Her Loss’

Double post and countdown post since this one deserves it.

Her Loss is a collaborative album by Toronto rapper Drake and Atlanta rapper 21 Savage. The album was initially slated for release on October 28, 2022, but was pushed back one week to November 4, 2022, following Noah “40” Shebib’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

Rumors of a collaborative album sparked on October 20, when producer DDot Omen took to Twitter teasing about the project. 21 Savage denied the rumors, responding with “🧢” to an Instagram post talking about the album.

The next day, Drake revealed the album’s title in the official music video to “Jimmy Cooks,”released the day after 21 Savage’s 30th birthday, along with a snippet of the track “FOWARD” by SBTRKT – an artist heavily associated with the OVO clique.

The promotional cycle for the album featured Drake and 21 Savage parodying NPR’s Tiny Desk series, staging a fake Howard Stern interview, and selling fake issues of Vogue with the pair photoshopped over the October issue of the magazine. The album’s cover and tracklist was revealed on November 2, 2022, via Drake’s Instagram. Genius: https://genius.com/amp/albums/Drake-and-21-savage/Her-loss

2 days till ICEMAN, let’s discuss and reflect on ‘Honestly, Nevermind’

Announced to the world just hours prior to its release, Honestly, Nevermind is Drake’s seventh studio album and the follow-up to his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, which was released on September 3, 2021.
In March 2022, speculations of a new album aroused as Drake shared a picture of him in a recording studio. Following that picture, rumors started to spread on social media that Drake was releasing a project during the summer. However, nothing was concrete until June 16, just hours before the album’s release, when Drake announced the title, cover art, and release date via Instagram, along with the caption:

7th studio album “HONESTLY, NEVERMIND” out at midnight

Following this announcement, Drake revealedthe album’s tracklist, consisting of fourteen songs, shortly thereafter.

An hour before the album’s announcement, Drake shared that he would be premiering his new radio show, TABLE FOR ONE, on SOUND 42 SiriusXM. When introducing the album an hour into the show, Drake mentioned it took him six to seven months to make.
In the album’s description on streaming services, Drake revealed that Honestly, Nevermind was dedicated to the late designer Virgil Abloh, who passed away on November 28, 2021. In addition to his contributions to fashion, Abloh was also a renowned DJ, playing at festivals, concerts, and nightclubs across the world. In his sets, Abloh regularly fused hip-hop, R&B, house, and dancehall sounds, which Drake incorporated into this album.

After receiving unpopular, critical feedback, Drake responded to the backlash regarding his album:

It’s all good if you don’t get it yet. It’s all good. That’s what we do. We wait for you to catch up. We’re in here, though. We’re caught up already. On to the next. My goodness. Genius: https://genius.com/amp/albums/Drake/Honestly-nevermind

3 days till ICEMAN, let’s discuss and reflect on ‘Certified Lover Boy’

One of his most highly anticipated releases in his career, Certified Lover Boy is Drake’s sixth studio album and the follow-up to his fifth studio album, Scorpion, which was released on June 29, 2018.

On April 9, 2019, Drake first announced that he was working on a new album during the London stop on his Assassination Vacation Tour. In June 2019, Drake once again teased his progress on the album via Instagram, where the caption read:

Album mode

In September 2019, multiple publications reported that Drake had finished his album, claiming that the album was set to release in November 2019. These rumors were later proved to be inaccurate.

On December 10, 2019, Drake made a guest appearance at DaBaby’s concert in Toronto, where he revealed that he was working on the album:

I’ma go back to the crib and try to finish this album up so we can turn up in 2020.

On May 1, 2020, Drake dropped his fifth solo mixtape, Dark Lane Demo Tapes. The day before, he announced that the album would be released during the summer of 2020.

Alongside the release of the song “Laugh Now Cry Later,” which features Lil Durk, Drake announced the title of the album via Instagram.

On October 24, 2020, his 34th birthday, Drake announced that the album would be released in January 2021 via the album’s trailer, therefore voiding his claims that the album would be released in summer 2020. The trailer saw Drake recreating the covers of his past LPs, which includes February 2009’s So Far Gone, November 2011’s Take Care, September 2013’s Nothing Was the Same and May 2020’s Dark Lane Demo Tapes.

On January 20, 2021, after fans waited nearly a whole month with no album in sight, Drake said the album “won’t be dropping in January” via Instagram as he noted he was focusing on recovering from a knee injury he suffered back in October 2020. However, he still confirmed that the album would still be released later down the year.

On March 5, 2021, Drake dropped Scary Hours 2, a sequel EP to 2018’s Scary Hours. Just like he did the first time in 2018, while he was working on Scorpion, Drake released Scary Hours 2 to keep fans happy and busy with new music while he continued to put the finishing touches on Certified Lover Boy.

On July 31, 2021, Drake made a special guest appearance on SiriusXM’s Sound 42’s Fri Yiy Friday radio show and revealed that CLB was finished:

Album’s cooked. Looking forward to delivering it to you […] OVO, we aim for that head. We don’t aim to please. Certified Lover Boy on the way. And that’s for anyone in the way.

On August 27, 2021, the album’s release date was subtlety announced on the ESPN program, SportsCenter. While the program was showcasing baseball highlights, a video clip of someone holding a sign that reads “CLB September 3” abruptly appears.

Three days later, on August 30, 2021, Drake confirmed on Instagram that the album would be released on that date. He also posted the album’s official cover, which consists of twelve pregnant women emojis.

4 days till ICEMAN, let's discuss and reflect on 'Scorpion'

Scorpion is Canadian rapper Drake’s fifth solo studio album. With a whopping total of 25 songs, it is a double-sided project; the first side is solely dedicated to rap whilst the other incorporates more of an R&B style.

It is possible that Drake leaked the album’s title in an October 2017 Instagram post in which the caption was a sole scorpion emoji, although the official teaser was released through an Instagram post on April 16, 2018.

On June 13, 2018, the album cover and the release date was officially teased via Drake’s Instagram post.

Billboards were placed all over Drake’s hometown of Toronto, Ontario promoting this album in June 2018. The advertisements also teased that Scorpion would be a double-sided project.

On June 28, 2018—only a few hours before the release of the album, Drake announced the official tracklist via Instagram.

Along with the release of the album, Drake posted a message on Apple Music under the EDITORS' NOTES section:

I HATE WHEN DRAKE RAPS

DRAKE SINGS TOO MUCH

DRAKE IS A POP ARTIST

DRAKE DOESN’T EVEN WRITE HIS OWN SONGS

DRAKE TOOK AN L

DRAKE DIDN’T START FROM THE BOTTOM

DRAKE IS FINISHED

I LIKE DRAKE’S OLDER STUFF

DRAKE MAKES MUSIC FOR GIRLS

DRAKE THINKS HE’S JAMAICAN

DRAKE IS AN ACTOR

DRAKE CHANGED

ANYBODY ELSE > DRAKE …

YEAH YEAH WE KNOW

These are common phrases and criticism from people who don’t support Drake. He acknowledges their appearance and hate, but doesn’t think much of it. Therefore, he put the phrases together and used it as a ‘fire back’ against his haters.

The title was likely inspired by Drake’s Zodiac sign, Scorpio. This theory is backed up by another Instagram post featuring a chain with a scorpion on top of a Zodiac circle.

With this album, Drake responds to Pusha-T’s “The Story of Adidon,” admitting that he does in fact have a child with porn star Sophie Brussaux, and with the final track, discusses how he is disappointed with himself for being a single father, something he always told himself that he would never be after his father Dennis left his mother when he was young.

Scorpion is not Drake’s first acknowledgment of his Zodiac sign in his discography. On his 2006 mixtape Room for Improvement, there is a song titled “A Scorpio’s Mind.” Genius.

5 days till ICEMAN, let's discuss and reflect on 'Views'

Drake announced on August 6, 2014 that the title of his next album would be Views From The 6. Drake would shorten it to VIEWS closer to the album release to make it less Toronto-centric, because The 6 is a nickname for Toronto, coming from the city’s two major area codes.

The build-up for the album has been bigger than any of his albums, thanks to the long delay between 2013’s Nothing Was The Same and 2016—his longest break between albums to date.

In that time, Drake released many singles, including “Hotline Bling,” “Right Hand,” “Summer Sixteen,” “One Dance” and “Pop Style.”

Additionally, there were many songs that leaked that were assumed to be made for Views, such as “Can I?” (although this was played on OVO Sound Radio after the leak and is presumed to appear on the album), “Go Out Tonight,” “Controlla” and “Faithful.”

Drake talked about the pressure of a long break between albums with W Magazine:

Actually, I love pressure! I’m always thinking, How do I top what I’ve done? How do I make this thing stronger? I ask myself, ‘Why does Adele’s album go diamond, and how do I do that? How do I create art that makes minds stretch further?’ I want to give many, many people many, many moments before I’m gone. That’s truly the art of what I do. It’s the only goal.

Views also gained extensive hype leading up to the release, thanks to the Meek Mill/Drake beef, which started in July of 2015. Drake’s two diss tracks— “Charged Up” and “Back to Back”—helped build anticipation. In “Back to Back,” Drake mentioned Views, in which he states:

I took a break from Views, now it’s back to that, nigga

(Six)

The beef will likely be continued on Views, as well as on Meek Mill’s Dreamchasers 4, which was rumored to be dropping on the same day as Views, but was later postponed.

Drake announced on Episode 14 of OVO Sound that Views would be coming in April. He later announced that April 29 would be the official date on Episode 19 of OVO Sound. Drake spoke about the album on that same episode:

It’s something that I’ve been working really hard on, myself and 40… Trying to craft a lifestyle track, a sound for our city. Views From The 6 won’t be a short ting. There’s a lot of music on there. You’ll have your full share of Drake music for the summer and for the year. Forever.

He tweeted about the official release date (seen below), which also showcased a Views Trailer.

The album is the first album to be released after Drake’s partnership with Apple. Views was an Apple Music exclusive for the first week, following on all other major streaming platforms the week after.

Regarding the album title, Drake, according to Songfacts, explained to Zane Lowe:

I think the announcement was more than just the album title it was a shift in the city [Toronto] – we saw an opening there. The name took on a life of its own.

Did Views live up to the hype?

6 days till ICEMAN, let's discuss and reflect on 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late'

If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late is Drake’s fourth mixtape. It was released unexpectedly on February 13, 2015, the six-year anniversary of Drake’s breakout third mixtape, So Far Gone.

Although it’s not the first, IYRTITL is one of the most prominent ‘commercial mixtapes.’ It was contractually considered Drake’s fourth studio album so that he could renegotiate his contract with Birdman’s Cash Money Records.

While introducing Honestly, Nevemind on his SiriusXM radio show, Drake admitted that he considered If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late as his fourth album as opposed to his fourth mixtape. Genius.

7 days till ICEMAN, let's discuss and reflect on 'Nothing Was The Same'

Nothing Was the Same is the third studio album by Canadian rapper Drake. It was released on September 24, 2013, through OVO Sound, Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Republic Records. Work on the record began in 2012 and continued through 2013. As an executive producer, Drake enlisted collaborators such as 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Majid Jordan, Jay-Z, Jhené Aiko and Sampha for guest appearances on the album. The album’s production was primarily handled by 40 and other OVO Sound producers; including Boi-1da, Mike Zombie, Nineteen85 and Detail.

The album was had seven successful singles: “Started from the Bottom,” “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” “All Me,” “Pound Cake,” “The Language,” “Too Much,” and “Worst Behavior.” “Wu-Tang Forever” was released prior to the album as a promotional single. “Started from the Bottom” and “Hold On, We’re Going Home” were both top 10 hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Drake also toured with Future, Miguel and PartyNextDoor from October through December 2013, on the Would You Like a Tour? concert tour.

Nothing Was the Same received generally positive reviews, and was named as one of the best albums of 2013 by multiple publications. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 with 658,000 copies sold in its first week of release. Within three months of its release, the album became the seventh best-selling album of 2013 in the United States. It also debuted at number one in Canada and Denmark, and number two in Australia and the United Kingdom. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Genius.

Drake considered this his favorite album that he's worked on and described it as his most concise and focused record, do you agree?

What are some of your favorite songs and why?

Take Care is the second studio album by Canadian rapper Drake. It was released on November 15, 2011 by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Universal Republic Records. The album features guest appearances from The Weeknd, Rihanna, Pip Squeak K Dot, Birdman, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and André 3000. Alongside prominent production from the album’s executive producers Drake and 40, further contributors include T-Minus, Chantal Kreviazuk, Boi-1da, Illangelo, Jamie xx, Supa Dups, Just Blaze, Chase N. Cashe, and Doc McKinney.

Prior to Take Care, Drake released Thank Me Later, which experienced positive critical success, but left him feeling disjointed about the album’s musical content. Expressing a desire to reunite with 40, his long-time producer who featured in parts on Thank Me Later, the duo worked extensively on the new album once recording sessions began in 2010. Drake’s vocals on the album feature emotional crooning, alto vocals, a guttural cadence, a melodic flow, and a larger emphasis on singing than on Thank Me Later. In comparison to his debut album, Drake revealed that the album is called Take Care because “I get to take my time this go-round [rather than rush]”.

The album also expands on the low-tempo, sensuous, and dark sonic aesthetic of Thank Me Later. It incorporates several elements that have come to define Drake’s sound, including minimalist R&B influences, existential subject matter, and alternately sung and rapped vocals. It features a mixture of braggadocio and emotional lyrics, exploring themes of fame, romance, and wealth. The album also highlights other topics, such as Drake’s relationships with friends and family, as well as touching on sex and narcissism.

Despite leaking online nine days before its scheduled release, Take Care debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 631,000 copies in its first week. It has been certified six times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Four of the album’s singles peaked in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100: “Headlines”, “Make Me Proud”, “The Motto” and “Take Care”. The album received general acclaim from critics, with praise for its expansive production and emotional themes. It was named one of 2011’s best albums, and later one of the best albums of the 2010s, by several publications. It won Drake his first Grammy Award, winning Best Rap Album at the 2013 Grammy Awards. In 2020, the album was ranked 95th on Rolling Stone’s updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Genius Description.

With 10 days away from Drake's next studio album, I'm starting a series where we discuss each major project he has put out in his discography starting with So Far Gone. Discuss down below what your favorite tracks were, when you discovered this album, and general thoughts on this era of Drake.

So Far Gone is Drake’s third mixtape and it was released on February 13, 2009, under his October’s Very Own label. This project is considered to be a modern classic and is one that launched Drake’s career to an international level. Furthermore, this mixtape led to Drake signing to Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment label on June 2009.

It features rappers like Lil Wayne and Bun B and singers like Trey Songz, Lloyd, Lykke Li and Omarion. Also, it features production by the likes of Noah “40” Shebib, Boi-1da, Just Blaze and Arthur McArthur.

An EP version of So Far Gone, consisting of five songs from the mixtape and two additional tracks, “I’m Goin In” and “Fear,” was released on September 15, 2009. However, after a 10th anniversary remaster of the entire 18-track mixtape in its original tracklisting was re-released to all streaming services. Unfortunately, on February 15th, 2019, the EP was subsequently removed. Genius description.

Its funny how people continue to try and spin a narrative that Drake should move on from the beef or that he is dragging it. Nobody else has fully moved on from the beef either:

Just today, seen multiple posts celebrating the 2 year anniversary of Dot's diss tracks and the comments are about what you'd expect.

Kendrick himself subbing Drake on many of his features since the beef "ended."

Failed talk show hosts talking about Drake and the beef still, not to mention other artists sometimes being asked in interviews about their perspective on the beef for some reason. Like Pusha T and Baby Keem during their rollouts, even JCole giving his 2 cents.

But now that Drake is about to rollout his solo album, he now isn't allowed to talk about the beef and that he'd be dragging it. Its incredibly hypocritical to say that Drake shouldn't be allowed to give his thoughts on what happened when nobody else has. What's funny too is that if Drake doesn't mention the beef those same people would turn around and say "he's scared to mention the beef."

You can't tell someone what they can and can't do when you already told them you isn't hip hop anyway, so fuck em. ICEMAN OTW 🧊🦉
