Why can’t I get a crushing tone on my amp?

I’ve got a Boss Katana, I think it’s an older model, and no matter how much I set there and tweak I can never get a great guitar tone. I can make it sound good when chugging but no good articulation when playing anything else. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

I just want to achieve a sick crushing tone. I’m just a lowly bedroom guitarist and we also live in a tiny trailer with a newborn so I can’t ever really crank it loud. I wonder if that’s my problem, playing to quiet?

I’ve considered a new amp too, maybe an Orange Micro Dark or a Joyo Zombie but I just worry I’ll run into the same issue.

Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated. My sucky tone kills motivation

Help with pickup wiring

So I ordered some DiMarzio pickups for my Epiphone Explorer, a Super Distortion for the bridge and a PAF 59 for the neck. My guitar has the quick connect plugs so I ordered some plug adapters so I can just solder to the adapters and plug n play in case I ever wanna throw the stock pickups back in.

Where I’m confused is the PAF 59 pickup only seems to have one wire while the SD has five. Do I just solder the single wire PAF to the hot on the adapter plug? Is it that simple or am I missing something?
