Undergraduate program in Marine Conservation? (Europe or Canada)

Hi,

I don’t know if it’s the right sub, but maybe there are some teachers or program coordinators here who could answer.

I have a background in digital media, but I want to switch into Marine Conservation. And before anyone say, "don't get that, there are no jobs, it's competitive", I hear you, but it's the same in everything. And after years of not succeeding in the field I graduated, I want to do something I'm passionate about.

The only programs in Marine Conservation I found are based in the UK and I'm wondering if someone working inside a university know if there are plans to have this program elsewhere in the world.

What I love about the UK program is that it is practical and focused on conservation. It's not biology or ocean science, but a mix of everything needed to do research and preserve the ocean, raise awareness toward the public and to influence politics, while understanding the general concept about how the ocean work and the main species.

However, it's too expensive to study in the UK for me right now and I'm a bit scared in the way that I would prefer to have access to the European job market instead of being stuck between the UK and Canada. Most of my friends are in Europe too. Until the UK join EU again...

Thank you!

I'm ready to give up

For real,

Canada job market suck.

Between the minimum wage unskilled jobs or the manager roles requiring 7+ years of experience, there is just nothing in-between to get into the market.

I applied to so many jobs, even the ones a toddler could do. Nothing.

I'm considering just printing my resume and walking in ALL companies in my city. I'm sure they will tell me, "You have to apply on the website; we can't get your printed resume here".

Or maybe I should add "Job Search Specialist" as my new job?

As someone with many European friends, I'm just thinking about getting a Youth Mobility Visa and move out and explore a bigger market. Right nowm I have no hope.

Sure, I could continue applying, and applying, and applying, but for what?

I'm also looking to change field and go back to university. I will explore options in the UK or Europe.

I'm going crazy. My unemployment benefits are ending in 2 months.

Thanks for reading my venting post.

Your Experience with Canada Job Banks?

Hi,

I'm looking to use the Job Matching feature on Canada Job Banks, but I'm a bit scared to put my SIN number out there.

Is the job matching feature that useful?

Thank you!

Buttons are plastic

Hi,

I just realized that even if clothing brands are saying to use 98-100% organic cotton and are sustainable, they all use plastic buttons.

On jeans, you can find metal buttons and rivets (is it really metal?), but on shirts, shorts, chinos, etc. It’s all plastic.

It’s a bit sad.

Why is hemp not used anywhere?

Hi,

Why is hemp not used in clothing other than maybe a handful of brands?

It's lightweight and breathable. It could replace a lot of polyester/nylon hiking gear.

Thank you

First time sailing in the Mediterranean in September - What should I bring and buy?

Hi,

I'm going in Italy in September and I took this opportunity to learn sailing (RYA Competent Crew).

I received a list of what to pack, but I actually have no idea what really matter.

There are some stuffs I have like a hat, shoes, regular t-shirt (I don't care if they are cotton), shorts, rain jacket, fleece jacket if it gets cold.

However, there are some stuffs I need to buy, and I need help as I don't want to spend too much.

  • Rain pants - Should I get a waterproof pant or a waterproof over-pant?
  • Long pants - Everyone is saying to avoid cotton or jeans. The thing is my current wardrobe is only made of jeans and chinos. Anyway, what kind of pants are recommended on a sailboat? Hiking pants? Synthetic or Linen, wool or hemp?
    • I was looking for pants from Craghoppers, Columbia, Salewa, The North Face, Helly Hansen, Musto (new Evo pants), Fjallraven, etc. I don't know how much of a hiker I should look like when on a boat lol.
  • Sun shirt/Rashguard - I'm looking to buy one long-sleeve sun shirt with a hoodie. Do you think it's a good idea?

Thank you for your help!

Choosing the right pants for summer hikes and travel

Hi,

I would like some advice.

Does the color matter?
For summer, do you recommend black, navy, green or sand color?
I'm torn between sand or green. I'm looking for some versatility to wear when hiking in the forest or travelling too (like walking in a city in the day).

Waterproof hiking pants or rain pants/shell?
Do you recommend a dedicated waterproof hiking trouser or a rain pant that you wear over your regular pants when it's rainy outside? If only a shell, should I choose a regular size or go a size larger than what I wear?

Thank you!
