Poor Matt
I cannot believe that Matt as a character has had to raise himself and his sister. No child ever should have to worry about bills, groceries and parenting at such a young age. At most, learning to pay bills, income taxes and other life skills should be focused on. It is no wonder Vick was as damaged as she was. She had so much to escape.
I truly do not understand how a mother could do that. It seems like the children were an accident. The other thing I can think of is trauma. I don’t recall her entire parenting type, as I am only on season 1 episode 17. It has been years since I last watched this.
My heart hurts for him so much. When I was a teen, I definitely babysat for a few people that had similar lifestyles. This is definitely not healthy for any child. I am surprised he wasn’t more damaged and was responsible for his education, home and finances.
I do tend to think she has unresolved trauma and her rebellious tendencies are likely influenced by personal trauma. It could be loss of a loved one, such as a spouse or child. It is possible that she never grew up, or was influenced at all younger age to rebel. Overall it seems that she is escaping trauma. I suspect it was emotional trauma versus a physical trauma.
I wonder, when she developed the rebellious nature? Why did she need to escape?
It actually makes sense that Vick was escaping herself. Having absentee parents can really damage children. The children deserved better. After Matt and his mom learns about Vick, I expect her to run away from her emotions and problems, again abandoning Matt. When we see Matt’s mom crying when she receives, I am surprised that she was upset. She definitely cared for her children, but mentally she was not able to be present. Similar to absentee parents, the children are the ones that suffer.
