Metro should direct card to fare gate payment via phone NFC

It's so painful to stand in a line, recharge that stupid card and then take the card out to every time you entry or exit the metro (and sweat every time searching it in your bag or pockets as it is so easy to loose)

You can't even put that stupid in the purse and use it becoz other debit/credit cards get in the way and the gates can't read it

It would be much better direct to use phone upi tap and go or they let google pay use the virtual NCMC

All other "non tech hub" metro cities in India have it while we are lagging behind

it doesn't make sense to use public transport here

So I travel from South Bengaluru to North Bengaluru for work, and I sat down to calculate whether metro is actually saving me money or not.

Turns out… taking my bike seems cheaper by around ₹1.5k/month, and also slightly faster.

METRO

Daily expenses:

  • Bike till metro station and back (~3.2 km one way): ~₹20
  • Parking at metro: ₹30
  • Metro fare: ₹57 one way → ₹114 both ways
  • Bus from metro to office and back: ₹36 (18*2)

So total comes to roughly ₹200/day

Monthly:
₹200 × 20 working days = ₹4,000/month

Time taken:
Usually around 1 hr 15 mins end to end one way

BIKE

Commute is around 20 km one way, so 40 km daily.

My bike gives around 43–45 km/l, but I calculated conservatively with 40 km/l.

Petrol cost:

  • Roughly 1 liter/day
  • Petrol is around ₹102.9 here

So fuel cost is about ₹103/day

Added another ₹20/day for maintenance/depreciation.

Total:
~₹123/day

Monthly:
₹123 × 20 = ~₹2,458/month

Time:
Usually between 55 mins to 1 hr 5 mins

So overall:

  • Metro commute = ~₹4,000/month
  • Bike commute = ~₹2,458/month

Difference is about ₹1.5k saved/month with the bike.

And bike is actually a bit faster

Only issue is dealing with Bengaluru traffic, rain, stress, etc. Metro is obviously more crowded during peak hours but makes sense to take it during rainy days
