Major JS Pandian SC from Madurai Tamil Nadu Shaheed diwas

Major John Soundra Pandian was born on 23 March 1960 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. He received his early education at the prestigious Rashtriya Military School, Bangalore, where he laid the foundation for his future military career. An accomplished student, he graduated with distinction and was recognized as the second-best student of his batch. Excelling not only academically but also in sports, he was awarded the coveted ‘Blue’ in boxing in 1976, highlighting his physical prowess and competitive spirit. After completing his higher secondary education, Major Pandian, driven by a deep sense of purpose, cleared the UPSC examination and was selected for the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla. He joined the 56th NDA course and distinguished himself during training, ultimately being appointed Squadron Cadet Captain of Golf Squadron. Following his successful training at NDA, he proceeded to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, for pre-commission training.

On 7 June 1980, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant into the 19th Battalion of the Madras Regiment, one of the oldest and most decorated infantry regiments of the Indian Army, renowned for its valour and rich battle traditions. His first posting was in the Tangdhar sector of Jammu & Kashmir, a sensitive and operationally demanding area along the Line of Control. Over the years, he undertook several challenging field assignments and actively participated in counter-insurgency operations in Manipur, earning a reputation as a courageous and dependable officer. Major Pandian also contributed to strategic operations in other regions. He participated in Operation Savage in Sikkim, enhancing operational readiness in a key strategic area. Later, he served as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka during Operation Pawan, operating in the Batticaloa region and demonstrating his steadfast commitment to duty.

Op Rakshak (J&K): 10 May 1996

During May 1996, Major JS Pandian’s unit of 19 Madras was deployed in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, close to the Line of Control (LoC). The unit’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) was heavily affected by active militancy, and the troops were regularly engaged in counter-insurgency operations. The LoC in this sector remained highly volatile, with frequent and unpredictable ceasefire violations. In addition to manning forward posts, the unit was tasked with preventing infiltration attempts, as the area was particularly vulnerable to militants crossing over from across the border. On 9 May 1996, security forces received credible intelligence inputs indicating the presence of terrorists in the Kathau area of Doda district. Acting on this information, Major Pandian’s unit planned and launched a search-and-destroy operation to neutralize the threat. On 10 May 1996, Major John Soundra Pandian was deployed to establish a stop position in the Kathau area to intercept any militant movement. The terrain was dense and challenging, with thick jungle and limited visibility, making the operation especially difficult.

At approximately 0925 hours, a group of militants was sighted and immediately engaged by the Commanding Officer’s party. An intense firefight ensued, lasting nearly 40 minutes. Despite the difficult conditions, the troops maintained constant pressure on the militants, restricting their movement and preventing escape. Exhibiting exceptional tactical acumen, Major Pandian identified a likely escape route that the militants could use. Recognizing the importance of blocking this route, he voluntarily moved forward through dense foliage to cut off their withdrawal. In doing so, he knowingly exposed himself to grave danger but remained steadfast in his mission. As he advanced, the militants, concealed in the thick jungle, suddenly opened heavy fire, grievously injuring him in the chest. Undeterred by his injuries and displaying extraordinary courage, Major Pandian continued to engage the enemy. In a daring and determined action, he returned fire and neutralized one militant at close range. The remaining militants, in a desperate attempt to retaliate, hurled two hand grenades at him, causing critical injuries. Major John Soundra Pandian succumbed to his injuries at 1120 hours on 10 May 1996. His exceptional bravery, indomitable spirit, and unwavering dedication to duty inspired his comrades to press the attack with renewed determination. As a result, five militants were eliminated, and their group was effectively disrupted. For his conspicuous gallantry, exemplary leadership, and supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, Major JS Pandian was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. His actions remain a shining example of courage and devotion, upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Major John Soundra Pandian is survived by his wife, Smt Suma Pandian.

Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad SM

Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad hailed from a humble farming family in Betadur village of Kundagol taluk, located in Karnataka’s Dharwad district. The youngest in the family, he nurtured a deep desire to serve the nation from a very early age. His childhood was marked by hardship and discipline; he would walk nearly six kilometres every day to attend high school in Aralikatti village. These early struggles shaped his resilience and determination. His dream of joining the Indian Army did not come easily. He faced rejection three times at recruitment rallies held in Belagavi, Dharwad, and Gadag. Yet, instead of giving up, he remained steadfast in his resolve. His perseverance ultimately bore fruit when he was finally recruited into the Indian Army in 2002—an achievement that stood as a testament to his unbreakable spirit. Lance Naik Hanumanthappa was inducted into 19 Madras Battalion of the illustrious Madras Regiment, a unit renowned for its gallantry, discipline, and rich legacy of battle and theatre honours. Over the years, he proved himself to be a committed and dependable soldier, always ready to serve in the most demanding conditions.

During 2015–16, Lance Naik Hanumanthappa’s unit, 19 Madras, was deployed in the Siachen sector under the command of Colonel Um Bahadur Gurung. This deployment placed the battalion in one of the most hostile operational environments on earth, where survival itself is a daily battle. In December 2015, Lance Naik Hanumanthappa was selected along with nine other brave soldiers to man the Sonam Post—one of the highest permanently manned military posts in the world, situated atop the Saltoro Ridge. The post commanded a strategic view of the Siachen Glacier to the east and Pakistan-occupied territories to the west, making it both tactically significant and extremely vulnerable. The Sonam Post was notorious for its treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather. Soldiers stationed there faced relentless challenges: violent winds, extreme cold, frequent whiteouts, and the constant threat of avalanches. Temperatures often plunged to as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius, while the high altitude of over 20,500 feet exposed troops to severe risks of hypoxia, frostbite, and acute mountain sickness. Survival in such conditions demanded exceptional physical endurance, mental resilience, and advanced training in high-altitude warfare and sustenance.

Alongside Lance Naik Hanumanthappa, the team deployed at Sonam Post comprised Subedar Nagesha T.T., Havildar Elumalai, Lance Havildar S. Kumar, Lance Naik Sudheesh B., Sepoy Mahesha P.N., Sepoy Ganesan G., Sepoy Rama Moorthy N., Sepoy Mustaq Ahmed S., and Sepoy Sunil Suryawanshi. Together, these soldiers stood guard in one of the world’s harshest frontiers, confronting not only the threat of enemy action but also the merciless forces of nature. On the morning of 3 February 2016, tragedy struck. A massive avalanche—triggered by enormous blocks of snow breaking away from the mountainside—thundered down upon the Sonam Post. Within seconds, the entire post was engulfed and buried under nearly 25 feet of snow. All ten soldiers stationed there were trapped beneath the ice and debris, with little hope of survival in such extreme conditions. The Indian Army immediately launched a massive and relentless rescue operation, deploying specialized teams, equipment, and medical support despite the severe weather and terrain. After six agonizing days of continuous search efforts, rescuers finally located Lance Naik Hanumanthappa beneath the snow. In what was nothing short of a miracle, he was found alive, though in a critical condition—his pulse was feeble, and he was semi-conscious, disoriented, and severely weakened after being buried for nearly six days in sub-zero temperatures.

Tragically, the remaining nine brave soldiers, including the Junior Commissioned Officer of the Madras Regiment, could not survive the devastating impact of the avalanche. Lance Naik Hanumanthappa remained the sole survivor of the Sonam Post tragedy, his survival symbolizing both the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit and the indomitable courage of the Indian soldier. Lance Naik Hanumanthappa was flown in an ALH helicopter to Siachen Base Camp and from there to the military airfield Thoise (an acronym for Transit Halt of Indian Soldiers En Route) for transferring him to the Army Hospital at Delhi. The whole nation prayed for Lance Naik Hanumanthappa’s recovery to complement his strong willpower to survive. However, Lance Naik Hanumanthappa’s heroic battle for life came to an end on 11 Feb 2016, when he succumbed to multiple organ failure. Lance Naik Hanumanthappa was a valiant and committed soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation. Lance Naik Hanumanthappa was given the gallantry award, ”Sena Medal” for his bravery, commitment, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice.
