Sudden sweet smell (doesn't smell bad)? Grandpa blamed it on a candle that wasn't lit at all in days. Could it be that?
So I see that there are so many posts in this sub about sweet smells but I'm hoping that my specific situation will give me more clarity because I just got anxiety real bad right now.
I'm not sure if it's my brain playing games with me, but I went to go pee before going to bed a few moments earlier and noticed my grandpa had moved the candle to the bathroom and turned it upside down? I could smell the sweet smell in the bathroom and asked him why he put it there and he told me it's because it smells really strong. He also opened the windows more. I told him I had not lit that candle the entire day. Matter of fact, for several days. A few weeks even. It's just been there. Opened without the cover, yes, but it never gave off a smell when it wasn't lit unless I put my face close to it. At least that's rhe case for me.
I thought it was weird how the candle was giving off a strong scent and decided to smell around the house and boom. I was smelling the sweet smell in the living room and kitchen. And when I went to my room again but came out again I smelled it strong in the kitchen. I asked my grandpa if he had cooked or done anything in the kitchen, he said no. I took the candle outside and covered it and it's been currently outside but just now I went out of my room and the sweet smell hit me again in the kitchen? I tried sniffing around but nothing. I looked at the electrical plugs and they seem fine.
I'm not sure if any of the following info helps, but: it's raining (even though the rain smell is totally different), our fridge leaks water from the freezer sometimes because the freezer doesn't work properly (but the fridge does), it's not currently leaking, washing machine and dryer are in the kitchen, we don't have AC nor a heater, we live in the Puerto Rican countryside, I don't know if I have diabetes or any diseases/issues with my health (I am actually currently in the process of getting medical laboratory tests done on me) and my grandpa has been worried about his health as well (don't really know if he has diabetes or not, it might be prediabetes. Still, smelling something sweet at the same time???), unsure if my grandpa has constantly smelled the scent of that candle in the living room every time he lies down on the floor to watch TV and decided this was the last straw or this time it was too much, and the smell doesn't really smell rotten it just smells sweet. And as I am typing this in my room I can kinda smell it too.
I will say, the smell is pretty similar to the candle which is a Rasberry Peach Frosé from Walmart. I really don't know what it is. As if I haven't had enough anxiety for the past couple of months. I'm gonna go sleep now. I actually planned on waking up early at like 2:30AM and I am losing sleep staying up this late and making this post too so when I wake up I'll see if I still smell it and hopefully there will be some replies as well. Maybe I can update. Thanks in advance!
Update: so after 47 minutes of attempted sleep I could not stop thinking about it. Just now I got out of my room and I admit that this time as I whiffed I was not really smelling that much now. Don't know if this is because it was all in my head due to anxiety, or whatever it was died down, or if the problem really was the candle, or if my nose got used to it. I went outside the kitchen door to check the gas tanks for the dryer and stove and they seem fine. And both times I checked (because this was my 2nd time checking) I did not smell anything outside. I stepped closer to them and did not hear any hissing. I'm gonna try and clear my head, get some sleep, and when I wake up if I still smell anything I'll update and I'll actually see what I can do about it. I'm only 18, don't know much yet about this stuff and can't really do much. At least I know loved ones that can help me and one of them is supposed to come tomorrow to pick me up for grocery shopping so I might tell her as well.
Update 2, next morning: Oh. My. God. You guys will not believe this. So, this morning after my less-than-3-hour sleep, I got up. Didn't really smell it that much although I felt like I did smell it a little. Got up and got started on my usual routine. Ate breakfast then went to the bathroom again. I smelled that sweet, almost chemical smell again and I felt like it was a little strong again and after I ate my breakfast I did smell it a little in the kitchen before I went to the bathroom again. Got anxious and worried but I just continued my routine and showered. My grandpa just got up right now and I was gonna talk to him about the possibilities of what it could be and how we can contact two loved ones that can help and then he explained to me that the smell is fucking MOUTHWASH that he decided to put around the living room/kitchen and bathroom???! The EXPRESSION I made when he said that. I asked him why and he told me it WAS because of the candle smell and I asked him if this happens every time he's in the living room watching TV lying down on the floor and he said yes. That every day he lies down he can smell the uncovered candle and if he stays too much time it bothers him a lot so he decided to put the candle in the bathroom and pour a little mouthwash in a few parts of the house.
I can't believe I lost sleep over this. Like??? He didn't even care to tell me that about the candle actually being smellable for him every single day he's in the living room?????? Why could he not have said anything before? Didn't even give me that explanation about the mouthwash last night. Like, I get that he's old and maybe just forgot to tell me (I asked him why he didn't tell me last night and he said he just remembered now) and him being old makes him do illogical solutions to things (not necessarily because of an old brain but because that's how many old people can be, he just comes up with instant random solutions that make no sense), but like, I'm still shocked by this. Flabbergasted. Bamboozled even. And here I was worrying. I could've literally resolved this myself, NO mouthwash necessary. Like???
Welp, mystery solved. I can stop worrying about it now... I think...
