What's your favorite underrated album from an overrated band?

[Did this yesterday on the pop-punk sub and got some really cool answers that made me revisit some stuff I hadn't heard in a while so thought it might be fun to do it here as well]

When I say "overrated" bands I just mean popular bands. Used overrated only as dramatic effect because it sounded good in the title haha

My main pick for punk would probably be Single Album by NOFX. I know that's kind of a hot take but, man, that album is just so good and the lyrics are excellent.

Some honorable mentions as well:

  • Descendents - Cool to be You (most Descentents' fans would say this album is a bit too soft but it's got melodies for days)
  • Blink 182 - California (loved the mix of Skiba's gloomy vibes with Mark and Travis)
  • Pennywise - From The Ashes (it was Pennywises "latest album" when I discovered them so maybe that's more of an emotional connection)
  • MxPx - Secret Weapon (the band past their "prime" but hitting as hard as ever)
  • New Found Glory - Radiosurgery
  • The Jam - In The City (people talk more about their later stuff but to me their debut album is unmatchable)

Linda Martell - Bad Case of the Blues (Hee Haw, 1970)

Such a shame there's not more material from Linda Martell. She's a true talent and a legend.

Where to start with Pansy Division?

Title says it all. Please recommend me your favorite Pansy Division album. The one you'd recommend to a friend who never heard of them before.

Will there be a new season of Cocaine & Rhinestones?

There hasn't been a new episode since February 2022, which is also the last time the blog was updated. TMC mentions in a bunch of interviews how he's supposed to be working on season 3, but he's also been very quiet on social media.

I understand the amount of research that goes into making each episode is colossal and that's why they take a while, but it's been more than 3 years without much information so I was wondering if anyone has any insights on it.

In my opinion, Cocaine & Rhinestones is the single best audio-based content piece out there right now when it comes so music history, all genres included. I've never listened to anything so well researched and thought of, so I deeply hope that Tyler keeps the ball rolling. The Ongoing History of New Music with Alan Cross is a strong contender, but not as thorough as C&R.

In the meantime, I'd love suggestions of podcasts that talk about the history of country or even interview shows that usually have good guests.

Burning Spear just announced a show in my city. Is it still worth it?

Burning Spear just announced a show in my city but I'm wondering how good his shows are now that he's 81.

Anyone here seen him lately? Is it still worth it?
