I am a long time fan of IMAX and IMAX 3D. I recently have done my fair share of Dolby vs IMAX comparisons, e.g. with the re-release of Avatar 2 and of course Avatar 3. Although I enjoyed both formats (also 4DX 3D, btw, ScreenX less so)
However in my country there is no IMAX (2D nor 3D) release of this concert registration (a mix of shows in Phoenix, AZ and Manchester UK.)
I am certainly not the world's most die hard admirer of Billie Eilish, but what she created together with James Cameron is quite a feast for the eyes and ears. It sets new standards for image quality, sound and immersiveness. It was a big party in the cinema (Pathe De Kuip, Rotterdam, Netherlands). Fortunately this theater is one with super comfy seats and plenty of space between the rows of chairs, because fans got from their seats and started dancing together at the front of the hall, close to the screen, mimicking the togetherness and intimacy of the Eilish concert on screen. It was really a quite something to see.
Cameron reportedly used 17 3D cameras, including a highly portable one held by Eilish during several songs. This flexibility and portability is not something that can be achieved yet with native IMAX cameras, so I sort of get Cameron's recent love and aim for a Dolby Cinema release.
Even though I only really knew less than half of the songs, I was really taken away and even wiped away a tear at times. The songs, the fan reactions, the mix with interviews and backstage footage, it really captured me.
For the aspect ratio nerds here: this Rotterdam Dolby has a ~1:2.35 screen (by comparison: the one in Scheveningen is closer to more vertical 1:1.78). The movie was projected here in 16:9, so with black bars on the sides. I think that is a good idea, so we got to see all the vertical information (another comparison: Avatar 2 was shown here in the scope 1:2.35 ratio, which made me prefer Scheveningen for watching Avatar 3 in Dolby Cinema.
While Cameron is of course mostly known for his cinematic work and thus cinematic look, here the look is more realistic, natural and sharp. Visually it feels closer to a documentary than a movie. However it is a very immersive, engaging and touching one. The image quality is absolutely top notch. I am already looking forward to the 3D Bluray home release, something only Cameron can seem to enforce these days.
