I’m 17F, almost 18, and I’ve been talking to a guy who’s 2 years older and already has his own place and a job at a warehouse Monday–Friday. We’ve known each other for about two years but have never met in person. We met through a mutual friend when he lived across the country, and now he’s moved closer.

We were friends for about a year, stopped talking for a year, and reconnected on Instagram around April 7th. During the time we were friends, he mentioned having a girlfriend in June, but recently told me he had a relationship from November to April. I also remember that in January we posted a fake relationship on Instagram because a girl at his job hated me and was obsessed with him. So the timeline doesn’t really add up.

Since we started talking again, I’ve been initiating most conversations (probably 8–10 times), and he’s only initiated twice. One of those was after I got upset and he said he’d talk to me the next day, so it felt more like obligation than actual interest. Then, he did text and then call like he said he would and we called all night for over 7 hours.

The confusing part is that when we do talk, it feels like he’s def interested it’s just when we don’t talk things are weird. He can be engaging, we’ve had solid conversations, and one night we were on the phone for about 7 hours. He’s flirted, asked if I’d feel disrespected if he kissed me, said he likes my height, and talked about visiting me. He asked for recent pictures of me, and when I said I looked bad and had acne, he told me to send one anyway, saved it, and jokes about how i’m gonna say “I love you” first. I know this might sound weird, but we met online while we were both under 18 and used to call and FaceTime all the time, so I know he’s real and from my area, and we’re actually kind of close. We’ve talked about it multiple times sand we agreed we both had a crush on each other in that time that we were friends.

We live 3 hours apart, and he said he would drive to see me but he’d want to stay the whole weekend to kind of get a bang for his buck sort of thing. I live with my parents, so I told him he couldn’t stay, meaning he’d have to get a hotel, and he said he’d still do it. He knows I’m not going to have sex with him and says he’s okay with that. He also said he doesn’t want to see me until I’m 18, which I understand.

But outside of those moments, he rarely reaches out and can take hours or days to respond. He also makes a lot of offensive jokes. Recently, after that long call Friday night into Saturday morning, I texted him Sunday just saying “heyyyy” and got no response. I tried calling twice (it went straight to voicemail) and added him on Snapchat again, but he didn’t add me back even though I can see he’s active.

At this point I’m confused. When we talk, it feels good and he seems interested, but then he disappears and I’m left overthinking what’s going on. Does this sound like he actually likes me, or just likes the idea of me or the idea of someone liking him?
