Justify middle/high school services in a nutshell, please.

How are we justifying minutes for middle and high school? I currently work in an elementary setting where we get almost all of our kids off at their 5th grade annual IEP. Staff and parents are agreeable and nobody fights me about this. I realize I am extremely lucky.

I know my state has a wealthy resource of SPED ELA teachers, Reading Interventionists, and Career Transition supports that I don't need to be continuing SLP goals for student with learning disabilities with adequate expressive/receptive communication and below average academics and academic vocabulary.

Unless your students are very severe and require AAC and functional communication that only an SLP can provide, what are you looking for to continue qualifying for services? We only have them for such a short period of time, other than the counseling and rapport piece of interaction I don't know what could feasibly be accomplished after elementary school. Likewise, for students with I.D. and syndromes, if they can communicate their wants/needs, are you still seeing them?

If you have a hot take on this please elaborate!

Advice for very difficult case (schools)

Student has an unrepaired cleft palate with very low intelligibility and poor frustration tolerance to therapy. ASD dx with behavioral issues both at home and in school have make emotional regulation very difficult with this student. Parents will not pursue cleft palate repair and despite average academic skills in the gen ed classroom environment, I can foresee behavioral issues making a large classroom setting hard for the student.

I have tried offering high interest activities but student operates at 80 mph and can't seem to slow down and do typical drill required for speech sound tx or tantrums and shuts down. Not a single person on his Team wants to deal with this due to overload of much higher needs ASD students in the school. I've tried talking to the Case Mgr and Social Worker and there's been no real movement on anything. Private practice SLP called me and reported similar behaviors and admitted to confusion on how to proceed.

What can I offer at his annual meeting to the parents?

Looking for recs as I've never been to MN before.

It looks like there's a light rail that appears to be pretty comprehensive compared to the public transit we have here. My question is, do people really use this light rail system for comprehensive travel throughout the region?

In other words, do the hours of operation make it feasible to come to your city and rely on the light rail to get to museums, coffee shops, and the lake areas reliably 7 days a week or am I better off relying on Uber? Looking to stay in the Powderhorn area and visit the American Indian Center. Not interested in downtown or Uptown areas, looking to stay community oriented and corporate free on my holiday.

Thanks!

I've just accepted a position at a school that sounds amazing but found out it's a 12 month position instead of the standard 10 month position to defray the cost of paying agencies over the summer to send in a therapist.

Of course, this was not ideal for me and was not disclosed until the interview but I had to accept it because there's no other options in my area and they awarded me my salary negotiation upfront. Does anyone have tips on avoiding burnout from year round work?

I have never done ESY before.

TIA!
