[Wyler Vetta] It's not an Alpinist or an Explorer but I took my Swiss-Italian watch to the Italian Alps
Wyler Vetta is one of those Swiss-Italian brands not known by many people. You could almost call it a micro brand if it wasn't for the long history.
Founded in Basel in 1924 by the brothers Paul and Alfred Wyler, they later partnered with the Italian Binda family and began selling under the Vetta name specifically for the Italian market. Wyler was the Swiss manufacturer, Vetta the Italian-facing brand. This arrangement eventually led to the combined Wyler Vetta name in 1993. It’s a cool mix of Swiss engineering and Italian flair.
Two fun facts:
- The 1934 Italian World Cup team wore them on their wrists, a tournament the Italians won and Mussolini used as a propaganda showcase
- Then in 1944, Albert Einstein fell off his boat in New York's Central Park and afterwards wrote a letter to Wyler praising the watch still ticking on his wrist. They still heavily use this letter for their marketing to this day :)
Mine runs on an ETA 2824-2, signed Wyler Vetta, with a sapphire crystal. Back in 2015, it retailed for around €1,000.
Felt right to take it on my trip through Switzerland and the Italian Alps.
