Wanted to design a simple smart speaker enclosure that would sit well on any desk.

This is my first attempt at product design. I’m not formally trained, just building and learning through this, so I’m sure there are things I’m missing.

I’d really appreciate feedback on how this could be improved especially in terms of form, proportions, and overall feel.

In a previous post I built an Echo Show 5 style enclosure running Home Assistant, but the mic performance wasn’t great.

This is a follow-up focused on fixing that using ReSpeaker Lite + XIAO ESP32-S3 + MAX98357A with ESPHome.

Focus was to just use the available IO and get the most out of it.
ReSpeaker handles the mic, and it’s been much more reliable for wake word and voice capture.

I am running faster-whisper for STT along with custom intents and sentences in home assistant. Its working pretty well withing a distance of 10-12 ft. It still struggles with background noises though and strong accents.

Using 4 WS2812 LEDs (out of which only 3 are used for assistant states) which is using the same IO pin that is used for the respeaker on board led.

The enclosure is 3D printed with a rectilinear infill mic grill (no top/bottom layers for airflow). Also tried to keep it clean and closer to a speaker form factor instead of a typical DIY box.

This is tuned more for voice and sound quality is good for audio responses. The led's might be too bright based on your taste. You can configure the max brightness in the esphome config provided in the link below.

This is not perfect by any chance, like I would have loved to use the onboard buttons somehow though. Would want to follow up on a V2 based on feedbacks.

Would love feedback on:

  • improving sound in this form factor
  • ways to integrate a display cleanly in a future version

Designed a minimal desk lamp with a spiral mode diffuser. Gives a soft, warm glow without being too dim.

Looks great in light background walls, also in the color schema off matte white and desert tan base.

Works with a standard E27 holder (try to get ones with inline switch), you can get it from Amazon.

It is a long print though, as the base is quite big and due to the ridges on it.
