I (24F) have been in a relationship with my boyfriend (27M) for 4 years now, long distance since the beginning. Last night, we had a deep conversation with our life plans. I asked him if he is willing to be transferred to a different branch (his work position will retain), which is currently 3 hours away from me and I can move there. He said no because he imagines himself retiring in his hometown and transferring is too complicated and would take years to happen. I, on the other hand, also can't imagine myself living in his hometown because it is in the countryside (reasons like political and geographical state) and I would be 9 hour-drive away from my family.
Our relationship is doing great, but this topic can't be brushed off because it would resurface again in the future. I want to end it now, because I know my decision on not wanting to move there won't be changed, and so does he. I also have plans of working overseas for 2-5 years but he does not want that as he wants to get married in the next five years.
He said that he will try to compromise because he loves me but I honestly feel that would just limit ourselves on what we can do and would cause resentment on each other in the long run.
