Hi. Early tonight I received a text message from my girlfriend of 3 years saying she wants no contact by text or phone for a month. She is in her early forties and still lives with her parents. She seems to be controlled by them too. In fact the message she had sent to me didn't read like something she would type.

This all came out of the blue and I don't know what I have done wrong. I am in my late forties and live alone. I have no immediate family in my area as my brother and parents are deceased.

Up until I met this girl in 2023 I never had any luck due to social anxiety, depression history and being a loner. My girlfriend invited me to visit the family home yesterday. The first part of the visit was fine chatting about various things. Then the mood changed.

Both her parents started quizzing me about how do you see this relationship going. Who is going to take care of her daughter when they die. Her parents are mid 70s. They were asking how do you see this relationship going forward. I gave an honest answer saying I am happy how things are going. Then the mother asked me what about marriage and commitment. I said I hadn't thought of it but I am with your daughter and love her very much. Me and my girlfriend only went away overnight once and that was separate beds as her parents didn't even want us to go. Yesterday her parents said they don't want us going away on holiday or even letting her visit my house incase people gossip.

Also the mother questioned did I know the meaning of love and said you are 47 and our daughter is your first girlfriend. I took that as if to say I had no history. I said to them I had no baggage, I always treated her respectfully, I was always there for her. Then I said what is my girlfriend opinion and let her have her say. During this she looked nervous and I could see tears welling up in her eyes. She seemed to be afraid to speak up. She is a very shy timid personality.

Well my girlfriend goes always with what her parents say just for an easy life. She seems to be controlled. The only reason why I tolerated this was she was my first real girlfriend after being rejected. Now as of today I don't know what to do next.

I haven't replied to her text yet, but the fact is I am devastated. This will set me in a downward spiral of depression and I can't ever see me getting back with her especially if her parents have are there and cannot see me ever meeting someone else.

We didn't go on holiday but we went out most weekends to do usual date stuff like coffee, walks, dinner, cinema. Now this is taken away from me suddenly and am scared this will lead into serious depression. Before I met her I would have went from Friday after work until Monday without speaking to anyone. I just don't know what to do, should I reply to her text in a couple of days or not reply and go no contact for a month?
