Hi guys! I’m currently doing research for a TV report for German television. We’re looking at how people are increasingly having to verify their age online. Our argument is that verification isn’t a real solution, because there are often ways to bypass the mechanisms. And then, of course, there are the data protection concerns on top of that.

To explore this, we want to try bypassing various verification methods in an experiment. The most obvious one is, of course, a VPN. We’ll simply make NSFW content on X visible there. We’ll also try Roblox/Reddit with the face scan – i.e. filming the screen – but we’re assuming that won’t work. I haven’t managed to do it in my tests, and I assume it doesn’t work anymore. If you know of any other methods, please do let me know :)

But I’d love to find another method that actually works. Do you have any ideas? Which website has a verification mechanism we could bypass? It doesn’t necessarily have to be age verification. Another possibility, for example, would be to trick a verification check on a social network.

Ideally, it would be a verification process required in Germany. But I’d also be happy to hear about tricks from all over the world that we can then try out using a VPN.

Hi! Ich recherchiere gerade für einen Filmbeitrag fürs deutsche Fernsehen. Wir berichten darüber, dass man sich im Internet immer häufiger verifizieren muss. Unsere These ist, dass Verifikation keine wirkliche Lösung ist, weil es oft Wege gibt, die Mechanismen zu umgehen. Und die datenschutzrechtlichen Bedenken kommen dann natürlich noch on top.

Dafür wollen wir in einem Experiment versuchen, verschiedene Verifikationen zu umgehen. Das offensichtlichste ist natürlich VPN. Dort werden wir NSFW-Inhalte auf X einfach sichtbar machen. Wir werden auch Roblox/Reddit mit dem Facescan ausprobieren, also einen Bildschirm abfilmen, gehen aber davon aus, dass das nicht klappt. Mir ist es in den Versuchen jedenfalls nicht gelungen und ich gehe auch davon aus, dass es nicht mehr funktioniert. Falls ihr da anderes wisst, lasst es mich sehr gern wissen :)

Ich hätte aber gern noch eine weitere Sache, die klappt. Habt ihr irgendweche Ideen? Welche Website hat einen Verifikationsmechanismus, den wir umgehen könnten? Es muss auch keine Altersverifikation sein. Möglich wäre zum Beispiel auch, einen Verifikationshaken in einem Sozialen Netzwerk zu erschleichen.

Ideal wäre eine Verifikation, die man in Deutschland braucht. Aber ich freue mich auch über Tricks aus aller Welt, die wir dann mit einem VPN ausprobieren können.
