Started seeing this guy I really like (latino, native from woodhaven, queens), but after a couple weeks of dates he started dropping the n word which makes me really uncomfortable… i called him out on it but he insists it’s normal in his “hood” and could call up any one of his black friends to prove to me that it’s fine. I grew up in a liberal white suburb where saying the n word as a nonblack person is absolutely unacceptable and would be social suicide. I’ve met his friends and they’re the same way (the ones i met are white from his same neighborhood). He got pretty mad at me when I asked him to stop saying it, we’ve had multiple fights about it.
Is this as not okay as I think it is? I’m also super uncomfortable because if he ever dropped it in front of any of my friends, white or black, they would probably stop being friends with me.
I’m feeling like this is breakup worthy, but I know if I cite this as the reason it’ll blow up really bad since everything else with us is great. He just won’t get it.
