Practicing crafting a campaign

I’m setting up my first DG campaign, which will be Last Things Last, and I plan to run it in about a month with friends. That said, while I don’t plan on jumping right into a home brew on my first DG game, ideas are running through me at Mach 20 billion, so I decided to write out a rough idea for a home brew. Wanted to share. If anyone has any suggestions or comments or anything, please let me know. I really just needed the outlet but I also do want to run this in the future.

I made this based on both reading official campaigns, reading the Handlers Guide on what elements create a campaign, and watching DG campaigns on YT/podcasts, etc.

I’m not asking about the rules of character creation or how to run a session, though this will be my first time ever running a TTRPG. My main question is where a session 0 should start from.

I’m a little hazy on whether or not the Agents should know each other and already be together/actively investigating a threat, or if session 0 could start before this point, I.e since Agents are disguised as normal people, there could be a scene for each Agent doing whatever they do in day to day life before someone sent from Delta Green informs them of a threat in their local area which they need to address. Each agent could be given a location to be at, and so then each Agent could introduce themselves in real time before starting their hunt.

Could I alternatively start with a single Agent who notices something supernatural and then alerts Delta Green, who then alerts other local Agents?

I’m just trying to get a feel for how much leeway I have in the beginning and what scenario I can start with. I feel confident about moving the game forward after that.

A while back I created a campaign that was originally for DnD. I stopped working on it after realizing I didn’t have it in me to learn the combat rules, but also because I learned that DnD in its current state is not made for horror. It’s supposed to make the characters feel like heroes.

My story for it was that there is this village being attacked by a fleshy sludge thing. To put it simply, this creature cannot move easily on its own, but studies the creatures around it and can mimic their body structures in order to move. Its main strategy for getting food is possessing another living creature, and after a time using it to kill everything around it, before sucking the blood out of each corpse. In turn, it can break down and use the DNA to more perfectly imitate body plans, therefore allowing it to move even more efficiently. Over time, it will become perfect.

This cycle begins in a village when the first human is possessed, and after this point it causes mass killings at least once every few days. It first infiltrates the knights castle, killing everyone within; then systematically possesses people who go to bars and other public spaces, doing the same thing.

The PCs must find out what is happening and stop it. I do not want the PCs to feel heroic in this. I want them to know that this force is greater than them, and that they need to be careful. I want them to be on edge, and I already have multiple ideas for scenes that set that kind of tone. I just need a good TTRPG as a base, one that can ideally span multiple sessions.

I’m going to be straightforward. This is technically a dream sequence, and I know people tend to not like dream sequences due to them not being real. Which is why I ask, please give it a chance. Dream sequences allow for a kind of reality bending, unnerving horror that I can’t get enough of, and this is not JUST a dream sequence - it represents a much larger problem unfolding in this town.
