Give your thoughts- Lana del Rey Live: Million Dollar Man

I posted earlier today about how I love Lana del Rey, even though a lot of trained professionals disagree with her singing technique. I’d like to show this performance as an example- I LOVE this performance and the grittiness in her voice that she adds. But to a trained professional it probably doesn’t sound good. I’d love for yall to comment whether you are a trained professional & if you like this performance or not + what you like/don’t like, that way we can see the direct difference in opinion in those who are trained vs untrained. Lana herself makes fun of these performances she did but a lot of her fans (like myself) really enjoy how she experimented with her voice! Shame that she was basically bullied out of singing like this

Hot take: Delivery matters more than crazy vocal ability

I listen to a lot of Lana Del Rey, and her music has resonated with me more than any other artist. Apparently in the singing community, she’s not well liked due to not having the craziest vocal abilities or using “poor technique”. She may not have the craziest vocals but her tone and delivery make all the difference. I feel like a lot of women in the music industry start to sound the same because they’re trying to have perfect technique? Im not sure what it is but if vocals are too perfect they start to really sound 1 dimensional to me and I can’t really feel the emotion behind the music. Take Billie eillish for example, I think she’s an amazing singer, but her music never really resonates with me because it just sounds too perfect? There’s so much emphasis in singing on having perfect technique that I feel like it takes the raw emotions away from it. One thing I like that Lana does is change randomly from singing breathy to more supported depending on the lyric she’s delivering. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think this is “correct” when singing as a lot of the time you’ll be corrected and people say “you’re lacking support here.. etc”. Anyways yeah I feel like when you’re worried less about having the most impressive vocals it becomes more about making art that is unique to you rather than having perfect technique. I’m not sure if this makes sense but maybe I feel this way bc I’m an untrained beginner singer so I’m never really listening for “bad technique” I just care about how it makes me feel.

* This is not an opportunity to hate on Lana del Rey, especially if you haven’t listened to her discography*

I feel like my high notes ruin this cover 🫩

On “come and take a walk on the wild side…” idk it just sounds weird to me compared to the deeper parts I sing. Lower songs are definitely easier for me so lmk how I can improve that high part!

Should I be trying to maintain the clarity I achieve on the “ooos”

It seems like when I sing the “oo” sound I have a more clear sound. Most of the breathiness in the recording is by choice as that’s how the original singer sings it, but I really like the sound of the “oos” and on “cool” which is also an oo sound. Let me know if I should try to maintain that sound and advice for how to do it. I think I kind of maintained it more towards the end but not super consistently. I am a beginner singer without training so feel free to leave any other feedback.

This is a test to see if videos get more engagement than recordings

Not my best work, just wanted to see if posting a video would get more replies than a recording. Still you are welcome to leave feedback ( I know the lyrics are a little unconventional lol). I know my breath control here is not good, been struggling with phlegm

Is there less breath support for breathy singing by default?

Having a hard time knowing if I am achieving good breath support. I feel like it’s easy to tell for more powerful belts and loud singing bc your voice just ends up straining and sounding bad. I like to sing with a breathy style a lot and still achieve good vibrato and have control over my singing, but how do I know if I have good breath support when singing breathy? I looked up a past post on this subreddit where someone was asking about achieving breath support and the top comment said “it shouldn’t sound too breathy from using too much air”. Does that mean that breathy singing just naturally has less breath support orrr?

Both recordings are in the same screen recording * I posted the 514 recording a couple days ago and the consensus was it sounds like I’m straining, forcing it, and pitchy. Someone even asked if my throat hurt after 😭 (it did not) 528 is my attempt today, trying to relax more and use horizontal embouchure as recommended on this sub. I really don’t feel like I’m straining at all, my voice doesn’t hurt or anything when I’m singing or after. I just feel like I always have this ugly underlying tone and I don’t know how to describe it. Maybe I need more forward placement? I try that but I don’t feel like it makes a difference, but maybe I’m doing it wrong. Let me know if you hear any improvement and if you have any advice that would help better my tone.

How do I know if something is just out of my capabilities or if I just need to learn better technique? I’m pretty comfortable in my head voice and falsetto, and chest voice/ mixed using my lower register, but when I try to use mix/chest for higher songs I just sound bad… I am a beginner singer who cannot afford vocal lessons, so any advice would be appreciated!

Okay I really hope someone can hear what I hear.. Basically I feel like when I sing higher songs with mixed voice I have this like underlying Mickey Mouse tone to my voice? I don’t have this problem with falsetto or when using chest voice (but I am limited when using chest voice to a lower range) How do I improve my tone?? Please someone let me know if you can hear this as well or if I’m tripping. (Also I am a beginner and have never taken vocal lessons)

I am a beginner singer and realized that I need to develop my mixed voice more. I think I am achieving it here, but I’m wondering if I am correct that I’m using mixed voice and if it sounds healthy. If not, what am I missing to develop it further? Thank you in advance! ( I know I flipped once into head voice on “attack” )
