Why has QuickTime suddenly worsened?

Since I updated to macOS Tahoe, QuickTime Player stutters repeatedly while playing my GoPro/drone footage. It's not a constant freeze: the video does play, but there are multiple small stutters per second that make it pretty much unwatchable.

The issue happens both with footage straight from the camera and with files exported from Gyroflow (stabilized clips). Occasionally the same thing happens in VLC too, though less frequently.

My setup:

  • MacBook Air M2, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
  • Files are typically 4K H.264/H.265

Things I've already tried:

  • Restarting the Mac
  • Playing files from both internal SSD and external drive

Before the Tahoe update everything played back perfectly fine in quicktime and not in VLC, after it they inverted, so I'm pretty confident the update is the culprit. Could it be a GPU/media engine scheduling issue introduced with Tahoe? Or maybe some background process added by the new OS is eating enough resources to cause this?

Has anyone else noticed this? Any fix or workaround would be appreciated.

Is Jello even fixable?

Hey everyone, been trying to get some smooth POV footage with my GoPro Hero 13 Black on a chest mount but the jello is genuinely terrible. First of all, I've already tightened the mount as much as physically possible.

I've also been messing with the camera settings trying to reduce it. Currently shooting with this config:

- Resolution: 5.3K

- Frame rate: 30fps

- Aspect ratio: 8:7

-Digital Lens: Wide

- HyperSmooth: Off

- Bit depth: 10-bit

- Bitrate: High

- Shutter: 1/120

- White Balance: 5500K

- ISO Min: 100 / ISO Max: 800

- Sharpness: Low

- Noise Reduction: High

I kept HyperSmooth off intentionally since I wanted to handle stabilization through Gyroflow, but even before that the rolling shutter wobble is pretty bad. The 1/120 shutter was an attempt to reduce it, but the footage came out too dark so I had to bump exposure in Premiere to compensate.

My goal is to use this setup for some urban cycling (parks, paths etc, not MTB though) but from my first indoor walking test it already looks rough. Once there are actual bumps and uneven terrain involved I can only imagine how bad it'll get.

Has anyone managed to tame the jello on a chest mount with this camera? Would a higher shutter speed help, or is that just going to make the exposure problem worse? Is HyperSmooth actually necessary here or would in-camera stabilization make it worse for post? Any advice appreciated.
