The Mission 1 ILS announcement shows how ignorant people are
I've seen countless comments about the new Mission cameras and especially the Mission 1 ILS where people are assuming that the camera is pointless. The comments are usually as follows:
- I can't think of any way this camera would be useful
- The camera isn't portable anymore
- How is it supposed to fit on my head with such a big lens?
- It's going to be difficult to get a wide FOV with such a tight crop factor
- No autofocus on an action cam is stupid
- An action camera that's not waterproof?
- Just get ___ camera instead (suggesting something like a BMPCC/FX3)
- M43 native lenses won't work well with it
It's been frustrating watch so many people miss the point of this camera completely. They're seeing it as a GoPro that can do less or a worse mirrorless camera, rather than the incredible powerhouse that it actually is just because it doesn't fit their specific usecase. It's literally a tiny camera, with one of the most adaptable mounts ever (not proprietary btw!), that can do 8k60/4k240/1080p960 with confirmed little-to-no overheating. Theres hardly anything else out there that can do this at the moment, especially under 10k.
Most people are also missing the fact that the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro also exist! If you want a traditional HERO style camera, then that's the one for you! The ILS isn't a replacement for a HERO, it's a separate camera all together.
GoPro usecase has also historically been B or even C camera. This is a camera meant to complement other cameras, it's not a main camera replacement (although hopefully we see GoPro venture into that space with this technology).
If you had any of the opinions mentioned above, I've answered them here:
- I can't think of any way this camera would be useful
- Car mount
- Drone mount
- Literally anywhere a camera is mounted
- Scientific purposes w/ slow motion that doesn't break the bank
- The camera isn't portable anymore
- It's definitely still portable, just not pocketable with a lens, but that's not the point.
- How is it supposed to fit on my head with such a big lens?
- Get a smaller lens? Get a regular mission 1? It's not meant to be a head mounted cam, that's for the other two cameras.
- It's going to be difficult to get a wide FOV with such a tight crop factor
- If you need GoPro-wide FOV, then the Mission 1 Pro exists for that exact reason. Even still, wide lenses do exist (Laowa 7.5mm is ~20mm on M1ILS)
- You don't need to mount native m43 glass, you can adapt.
- No autofocus on an action cam is stupid
- Mounted cameras don't need autofocus. It's a set-and-forget camera. In fact, autofocus off is usually the norm for this usecase.
- An action camera that's not waterproof?
- There'll definitely be dive cases made for this camera, but that's very clearly not the intention
- If you need a waterproof HERO style camera, get the Mission 1 Pro.
- Just get ___ camera instead (suggesting something like a BMPCC/FX3)
- I can't think of a single camera that can do 8k60/4k240/1080p960 at this size & price.
- There's so much that this GoPro offers over other cameras
- This isn't an A camera replacement
- M43 native lenses won't work well with it
- The mount is for adaptability, not for the native lens selection
As usual, it'll be the loud minority that we're hearing and the people that have a usecase for this camera will be loving it. I can't wait to see the content that people will make with it. I'm just fed up of the lack of critical thinking in these comments sections.
GoPro Mission ILS - app for FOV and DOF?
Hello,
any apps that will calculate FOV and DOF for various lenses on the Mission ILS?
Noting that it’s a mixture of one inch sensor and MFT lens connection
Looking to do experiment a bit, but want to see its theoretically possible beforehand
Cheers
DCRainmaker's first impressions on the Mission 1
Looks like the first impressions embargo just dropped, and u/dcrainmaker was able to release his first impressions.

It looks good; I'm now super tempted to pick one up.
Mission PRO vs. Base
Since it's just upgrade framerates moving up to the PRO, do you think it's just firmware or additional hardware cooling?
Really odd segmentation. Would've thought there would be more differences... Like resolution/audio/etc.
GoPro Mission Camera Prices Announced: $600 for Mission 1, $700 for Mission 1 Pro, $700 for ILS
Visible on their official site: https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/cameras/buy/mission-1-pro/CHDHW-011-master.html
Someone posted a way to get a $100 discount too https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1sq733o/mission_1_discount_no_subscription_needed_ymmv/
I'm interested to see how the market responds to the ILS once it starts shipping. $700 with no lens puts it in competition with other interchangeable systems like the Canon R50 V at $620 body only, the Panasonic G100D with kit lens at $750, or a used GH5S body at $700 from MPB that can do 4K60 internal at the full sensor width. The latter would be my honest recommendation for anyone interested in the ILS. I'm also picturing that the other Mission cams would be a more durable option for anyone that wasn't already enticed by the Osmo Pocket 3 and 4, which also had a 1" sensor paired with an f/2 lens (FF f/5.4 equiv).
There's gonna be a lot of confused users out there who buy a m4/3 lens only to realize that nothing works not even focal length metadata. Given that the ILS already removes the waterproofing submersion rating, I don't know why they would omit the electronic lens connection other than licensing or development cost (or just not having the institutional knowledge to implement good autofocus). I also don't know why they didn't make a speed boosting optic that would allow you to use the entire width of a m4/3 lens on their 1" sensor. I'm glad GoPro is making significant design improvements like the 1" sensor but making a first-party back bone mod was not on my bingo card.
Gopro Mission 1 Pro Series Dive Mode for Scuba diving & Snorkeling
Some of the settings i suspect they are coming from Gopro labs firmware from Hero 13 implemented in the Mission stock firmware, like DIVE MODE for refraction of the water to avoid corner distortion & STABILIZATION is a specific algoritmth for underwater.
Missing some preset for WBLK=1 ( lock white balance 1 second after the recording starts, really helpful underwater, but is available on Gopro labs firmware.

GoPro Mission 1 Photo Mode
I am interested in the new model for photography and am having trouble finding information as most reviewers are mostly interested in video. Namely, if the pixel binding applies to photos, focusing and exposure settings, how easy it is to change ISO/Shutter. Anyone found this information? Thank you.
I hope we get footage from the Mission 1 Pro soon (not only the ILS)
The ILS is a super cool product and and I'm glad it exists, and it seems like it'll be capable of capturing some amazing footage.
That said, one thing I've loved about GoPro videos over the years is the feeling of "maybe I could capture this too". Now with the ILS, we’ll be seeing lots of footage that can be drastically different from what almost all users will actually be able to capture. This is coming from someone who has licensed footage to GoPro in the past and owned multiple versions over the years, and I've pre-ordered the Mission 1 Pro which I plan to mostly use for action sports (skydiving, scuba diving, skiing, etc).
Outside of film sets and semi-pro creators, almost no one will be setting up their GoPro like this https://imgur.com/a/NcfHg1l
If the launch video is 95% ILS footage with expensive lenses and gimbals, then IMO it would be pretty misleading to what most of us will be able to capture or film.
I hope we see some dedicated footage from the non-ILS cameras soon, or the launch videos have a small caption or description of which scenes were filmed with which camera setups.
Gopro Mission 1 / Mission 1 Pro - Dive housing confirmed by GoPro - NAB 2026

How would i go on about making my footage look so close to the handlebars?
https://reddit.com/link/1srjdk1/video/kug5d6waqiwg1/player
This video is straight from the GoPro website for ND filters. Please help i would love my videos to look like this aswell
Mission SD cards
I've always assumed later GoPros were pushing the limits of UHS-I. Now with 10-bit 8K open gate video, will they make the jump to UHS-II or SD Express?
My Canon R5 will not record 8K on anything but a CF Express card.
Max 2 USB Connection Issues
I have a Max 2 and can't get the camera to show up via usb connection with my computer. It says "USB Connected" and goes into external storage mode, but it doesn't actually show up on my computer. Anyone else experience this?
Preordering Mission 1 pro
I was wondering wether pre ordering is price wise the correct option when it comes to this camera.
*For clarity, I do not own any sort of action cam at this moment, so i'm not upgrading or anything.
Since the Mission 1 Pro will feature new batteries, I find it a little odd to preorder the mission 1 whilst having no accesories, and not having the option to even buy extra Enduro 2 batteries at this moment. Is it financially more interesting to wait for a bundle drop?
Would the free subscription i get when purchasing the gopro right now, and then buying the accesoires seperately with the subscription discount be around equal to the price savings of a bundle?
Will Genlock be supported on the GoPro Mission 1 series?
Hey everyone! I've been getting into stereoscopic photography/videography using GoPro cameras. I came across some discussions on the GoPro Labs GitHub about implementing Genlock, and I was wondering — is there any chance Genlock support could make it into the Mission 1 series?
Substitute for my GoPro Hero 4
My GoPro Hero 4 just made it across the rainbow, and now I need a camera to record my motorbike clips. Do you guys have any recomendation? I heard GoPro Hero 7 onwards comes with vídeo stabilization, and I dont mind getting one already used. Im on a budget, so I'd prefer if the price wouldnt go over the roof, maybe 200€ tops.
Mission 1 Discount (no subscription needed) - YMMV
Hey,
Just wanted to share a discount for those of us who don’t have GoPro Premium subscriptions that are more than a year old (required for subscriptions to be over a year old for the $100 savings on the new Mission cameras).
There are 10% off coupon codes that work. I found that right now, CouponCabin is offering an additional 15% cash back - up to $45 total. With the 10% that’s over $100 off. Make sure you click through with nothing in the cart first (this was explicit in the instructions) and make sure you use the code given at the time. I was presented 3 different codes for the same deal when I refreshed. I’d screenshot everything, just in case. Here are two of the codes that worked (in the US) if you don’t care about the cashback: CHRIS10, REMY10. If you want to use the cashback, make sure to use the code given at the time you click through. Here’s the link: https://www.couponcabin.com/coupons/gopro/
It’s not a huge different but if you want to maximize the cashback (& you shop at Amazon), choose Amazon gift card for payout for a 10% bonus (I’m pretty sure that’s 10% of the cashback so $4.50, not 10% of the purchase). Still, it ups the cashback to nearly $50.
Getting the Mission 1 for around $490 after all cashback and with the free Point & Shoot grip is better than I thought it might be. Not as much of a jump in price from the Hero 13, given the 1” sensor. Since I’m a new purchaser, they also give a full year of their GoPro Premium subscription for free, too.
FWIW, if you order now, you get the Point & Shoot grip for free whereas on the GoPro announcement page it said that preorders (starting on May 21) would get 20% off the Point & Shoot grip. This seems to be an added bonus for ordering early.
If you need it, here’s the link to preorder Mission 1 (you can’t search for it from their site yet, for some reason…it just routes searches to the page with announcement info where you can signup for notifications when it’s released): https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/cameras/buy/mission-1-pro/CHDHW-011-master.html?option-id=CHDHW-001-master
Enjoy!
