I always thought backyard composting was too much of a hassle/mess.

Wrong!

This is what my finished and (poorly) sifted compost looks like today.

Its the result of very roughly layering wood chips, cut grass, leaves and kitchen scraps for most of last summer and fall. Occasional watering (dried out completely times). Turned over one time. Contained in a geobin in the corner of the yard.

Hello everyone! This year I plan to grow cut flowers in my backyard in the ground. So far I've dug up a few rows of sod and now I'm wondering a few things:

  1. Is weed fabric a must? I see it everywhere with tiny little holes for growing. Is this a non negotiable for long rows (3x30ft).

  2. I plant to amend the clay heavy soil with compost and plant directly in it, is that a good idea? Or should I first lay down cardboard and then plant in compost/garden soil I place on top of the cardboard?

  3. If I place cardboard down, how many inches of soil on top is needed before planting?

basically, how do I plant in beds in the middle of my lawn that used to be grass...help!

Thanks so much, photos of two of the rows which are about 3 feet wide and 30 feet long.
